Pathfinder; An Adventure of Horror in a land Filled with Darkness, Open Recruitment

Recruitment

Sczarni

Hey folks! I, the Mighty Crayfish, am interested in running another adventure. This is horror themed, and non-adventure-pathy and a brief is discussed below:

1. Races are mostly unrestricted. The only race that others cannot pick is the Ratfolk, for plot related reasons I'm sorry. Drider is an abberation, which is also not allowed. Other abberations are also not allowed, just in case you were wondering.

2. Classes are mostly unrestricted. 3rd party classes are fine. Multiclassing is fine. VMC is fine.

2ish. 4 to 6 players are what I'm after. Give me 4-6 interesting characters. Probably have this recruitment open until that happens and open it again if I lose any.

3. Other important information
20 point buy.
Max Hitpoints per die.
Starting Level 3.
Starting Wealth: 3000 gp.
Traits: 3, with drawback. 1 Campaign trait is allowed per character.
Background Skills are available.
Any Alignment is welcome.
Alternative Rules for AC: Armor AC is DR against attacks.
Party Balance won't matter/is a myth.
Be prepared for character death and some gnarly scenes.

And the good part, the story:

These are the End Times. Everyone that is lowly, filled with cowardice or hatred, goodness of the soul and generous, or lifted to sit on a pedestal above man feel as if something is wrong. They are pulled towards this central point, through fate, through convenience, through accident, but all are pulled the same. For all have a stake and may suffer great loss in the End Times. Nations are attacking one another, people are trying to get by the unlucky and unfortunate are starving, and unexplainable and unsayable things are happening.

Those that follow gods, devils, daemons, demons, or old ones have received mixed messages, unclear ideas, and its this uncertainty that surrounds this adventure. Those that don't follow gods or what-have-you are equally lost. The moon stares hungrily down at both and the land is cast in constant shadow. Those that stare at the moon go blind or mad, those that don't, walk in darkness. It's a tough life yo. Erhem, and all the lands pull travellers to a small farming village in the middle of someone's plans to unleash something terrible upon someone unsuspecting of this terror.

"Someone is to blame! Someone must be found and hanged! For all the blood that is spilt falls onto their shame, their head. The dead are no more and death returns to being a mystery, for the afterlife is no more, and the souls stored there are no more, and the priests that care for the dead are no more." The most common printed words in these days.

Will you be the unlikely heroes of a world lost to you, or will you perish under the knowledge of death? Or will you be the unknowing solution? Will I answer questions and will you question my answers?

Question: This is a Non-AP adventure, but we are allowed a campaign trait?
I don't understand.

Sczarni

I see your point. We'll have 3 traits with a drawback, or 2 traits without.

Sovereign Court

Just wanted to say, this looks super-cool.

Sczarni

Doesn't it? I'm all about running the hip and trendy games.

Sovereign Court

dot for sure

Sczarni

Yes, excellent! I know that horror is a rare beast for Pathfinder adventurers, just because Pathfinder is built towards heroism and is settled on a foundation that promotes heroism. Which is probably why my old, regular DM has such a hard time with it.

But heroism without struggle has a weird feeling, to me. I am a man of conflict, which is a very firm word indeed. Strange Aeons sounded like a cool idea, it's just that most DM's will stick to the barebone story of the book, which is fine. Just not the best it could be.

Can we use templates?

Liberty's Edge

Oooh I'm interested!

Sczarni

Hmm. Templates are better received than freely given. I will say no.

Is this a play-by-post game?
If it is, you got my interest.

Sovereign Court

Well here goes. I will flesh him out when we get a little more detail on the world (i.e. Gods, areas, etc.).

You better believe it is! Because it is, you're welcome. Early morning humor is something else. As for the world, its regular Golarian, with all the nice places and familiar faces. Your characters can be from anywhere and either travel a short distance or a long distance, or a verrrry long distance. The further you are from the "middle", the brighter it is, but it becomes progressively darker after the one day, where the sun doesn't rise. All that travel have been sent to investigate, from topland, the underdark, and across the sea.

Liberty's Edge

If still open, I would like to play Haltak, a pessimistic dwarf, but in the ways of dwarves just because death is inevitable doesn't mean you don't stand as stone until the end. While it might take me a bit depending on time, will be using heavy arms and armor, and possibly a divine class e.g. cleric or inquisitor.

Sovereign Court

I'll be dotting this.

Sczarni

So far there's 1 potential player, so there's plenty of room for more!

Hey Crayfish! So... Question about crazy concepts :)

- What about certain broken races like Trox, Svirfneblin, Drow Noble, etc.? What about other monster races?

- What about certain broken archetypes like the Synthesist and Master Summoner for Summoner?

- What about templates? CR+1 or +0, I mean.

Ok so I got a character concept: Hobgoblin Samurai, goes by the moniker of "Kuur".

After serving in his homeland as an errant-samurai, he feels a strange pull to these strange and foreign lands.
He believes he might finally find his own "truth" out here, where uncertainty and madness threaten to engulf all things...

Sczarni

Oho, look at the Chess! He's got an idea! Witness him! Jokes aside, yes, you can be any race that's not an aberration. Which so far, is drider. Probably others, but I hardly look in that section. Just think, that super cool, Drow Noble booty...or this short little dark-gnome thing. Whatever floats your boat.

I love the Master Summoner, why would I ever ban it? Synthesist summoner is fine, if you like the one-man army feel. If you're in to that.

Templates are still no. But don't you worry, you'll probably get them. Just not in the way you'll want them. Doesn't that sound like fun? Don't drop your weapons kids. I am just too funny today.

Hobgoblin Samurai? Sounds neat. I think I was playing with a hobgoblin samurai-esque character in one of my adventures recently. But my old DM guy doesn't know how to write stories for non-human-like characters apparently. Give him a gnoll and he's like, "What is this strange beast? Does it want to adventure? Or does it just want to eat dead things and enslave short people?" Answer is, it's always both.

Since the GM approves, I will submit my character shortly.

Which brings up my next question: how do you want me to submit my character?

Sczarni

Character sheet. Character backstory. Two spoilers, one for each and with a little sprinkle of panache at the end.

Liberty's Edge

Ok, in this thread I take it? Anyone want to recommend a standard markup for posting a character sheet in the forum?

I do like a good horror game...

Two questions - are you familiar with Spheres of Power?

Do you allow it in this game?

Sczarni

I made a few characters with Spheres of Power, and I like the system, so I'll allow it. It's just so nice and full of cool abilities and so general that you can make some neat peeps.

@Blashimov. Look north and see Gallahad, glorious Gallahad. He's already posted a character sheet and you bet that that's the standard, nice-looking paper that is a respectable sheet.

Thank you. Now I just need to decide what to do. I've had my eye on a Resizer Mageknight for a while...

Ok so I have tried to submit my character but it is not as nice as how Gallahad did it.
So first off, this is my first time trying out this kind of forum. Pointers would be helpful

Sczarni

Copy and Paste my friend. Looks like this. I suggest filling in the blanks in my handy-dandy-easy-Pathfinder-sheet example. Also, if you see any cool coding, you can hit reply to the comment that has it, and as long as its not in a spoiler, you can steal it and reuse it for your own gain.

We'll call it, the Galahad example.

One more thing. Paizo forums likes to time out, so you should make your character on a separate thing and when you have all the info, all of it, then submit a post.

I am interested.

Does this take place on Golarion?

I have a LN Changeling Necromancer Cleric of Anubis from Geb that I'd like to try playing. She would be animating corpses with animate dead and some GMs have an issue with that.

Background is still a little sketchy but I can flesh it out over next couple of days. Currently the background is tied with Geb and Osirion. If this is a homebrew world then I would need references.

Primary Gear: 77gp; masterwork o-yori (w/ horned helmet & mask), masterwork katana, masterwork wakasashi, naginata, daikyu (composite longbow, STR +3), Steel Lamellar Barding (for mount)
-------------------
Special Abilities
Braggart: can spend a standard action to extol his own accomplishments and battle prowess. He receives Dazzling Display as a bonus feat. He does not need a weapon in hand to use this ability. The cavalier receives a +2 morale bonus on melee attack rolls made against demoralized targets.
Challenge: 1/day; +1 melee dmg vs target of challenge, lasts until target of challenger is defeated (DM determines when that occurs)
Resolve: 2/day, after defeating target of challenge, gain 1 of the following effects:
1.Determined: As a standard action, the samurai can spend one use of his resolve to remove the fatigued, shaken, or sickened condition. If the samurai is at least 8th level, he can alternatively remove the exhausted, frightened, nauseated, or staggered condition. If the condition has a duration longer than 1 hour or is permanent, this ability removes the condition for 1 hour, at which time the condition returns.
2.Resolute: Whenever the samurai is required to make a Fortitude or Will save, he can spend one use of his resolve as an immediate action to roll twice and take the better result. He must decide to use this ability before he rolls the saving throw.
3.Unstoppable: When the samurai is reduced to fewer than 0 hit points but not slain, he can spend one use of his resolve as an immediate action to instantly stabilize and remain conscious. He is staggered, but he does not fall unconscious and begin dying if he takes a standard action. He does fall unconscious if he takes additional damage from any source.
Weapon Expertise: can draw the Katana as a free action as if he had the Quick Draw feat. In addition, whenever he threatens a critical hit with the Katana, he gains a +2 bonus on the confirmation roll. Finally, his samurai levels count as fighter levels and stack with any fighter levels he possesses for the purposes of meeting the prerequisites for feats that specifically select the Katana, such as Weapon Specialization.
-----------------------
Feats Explained
Dazzling Display (augmented by Braggart): Make an Intimidate check to demoralize all foes within 30 feet who can see your display
Double-Slice: Add your Strength bonus to damage rolls made with your off-hand weapon.
Two-Weapon Fighting: If you wield a second weapon in your off hand, you can get one extra attack per round with that weapon. When fighting in this way you suffer a –6 penalty with your regular attack or attacks with your primary hand and a –10 penalty to the attack with your off hand. If your off-hand weapon is light, the penalties are reduced by 2 each. An unarmed strike is always considered light
----------------------
Traits & Drawbacks Explained
Imposing Scion: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Intimidate checks.
Killer: You deal an amount of additional damage equal to your weapon's critical hit modifier when you score a successful critical hit with a weapon; this additional damage is added to the final total, and is not multiplied by the critical hit multiple itself. This extra damage is a trait bonus
Rich Parents: starting wealth increases to 900 gp.
Pride: When someone threatens, accuses, or challenges you, you take a —2 penalty on Diplomacy checks and Sense Motive checks involving that creature until the creature apologizes to you.
---------------------
Other Gear
signal horn
common Backpack (holds: 5 caltrops; block & tackle, 50ft silk rope, scroll case, sealing wax, mirror, ink, inkpen, week's worth of rations, coin purse)

Riding kit: includes a bit and bridle, a saddle, a saddle blanket, saddlebags, and 2 days' worth of feed for a mount. The weight can be lightened 10 pounds by discarding the feed.

Campsite kit: four bundles of gear, designed so four individuals can share the load. It consists of four bedrolls, four blankets, a day's worth of firewood, a flint and steel, a tindertwig, four mess kits, a cooking kit, and 8 days of trail rations (with the expectation that adventurers will supplement the rations with a little hunting as they travel). Adventurers expecting inclement weather should also purchase one or more tents.

Yeah, I argued with the writers themselves about Strange Aeons, and how Cthulhu does not lend itself to the kind of play style where the wizard can cast three spells and cause a Cosmic Horror's face to melt off. When you're the thing monsters have nightmares about...

New to pbp but would like to join

Sczarni

@Galahad, You are very welcome.

A samurai has joined up with potentialness. We're going full, close combat, prideful glory over here.

@Peet, Anubis is a very orderly god. Who dares stand before his gaze? I love Smite, anyway, yes it's Golarian. Yes, necromancy is a perfectly acceptable magic form. Just bump up that cleric to level 3 for the adventure and you'll be golden. A golden necromancer.

Hi Crayfish! Here's my submission. I was tempted on using drow nobles, svirfneblins or even crazier races and classes, but I decided not to. At the end of the day, if people go that "broken" route for "reasons", I'll still appreciate my "more normal" character. Roet is a Tiefling very demon-looking Paladin of Irori.

Sczarni

Oho, hello! I feel ya. Running a catfolk with a bunch of people with extra HD from being monsters, which is just fine. It's just...I have half their hitpoints. Makes normal encounters for them very difficult for me. But I love the challenge.

But a Tiefling Paladin is super cool too. Three prideful men, all lawful, this is turning into an interesting party.

I give the options for anything, therefore, I stifle no creativity and leave it up to the player to run what they wish. Ye old Golarian has a lot of strange things in it. Being a Drow Noble doesn't make you wrong, no more wrong than being a wizard/necromancer/guy-who-blows-things-up-with-a-snap-of-his-fingers. Or the minionmancer that is Master Summoner. It's all different playstyles, that you really, really feel if you have one encounter a day.

I totally hear you. I was tempted to go on the route of the races and classes usually prohibited by other recruitments - mostly for a matter of try something we usually can't. But at the end of the day I'd rather we keep everybody around the same power level or close (my two other lawful companions are already quite powerful on their own specialties) so we can all have a good time.

I will say that if you decide to run something crazier later on and people are dreaming on insane builds, then I'd try something like that. And yes, a demon-looking paladin is a supercool RP concept too :)

It's funny realizing, like you said, that we all picked the lawful alignments and the same drawback. Heh. I can easily see how we all get along and why we decided to band together.

Hello, Roet.

Will your paladin have a problem with Akurna raising undead? It is kind of the main focus of her build.

Roet follows Irori, a LN god, and enlightened paladins are in general more about their own codes of conduct. Roet would have an issue if she was just doing it for evil or this kind of thing... Especially in the apocalyptical world Crayfish is proposing, where I guess people have to be more pragmatic. If the GM feels my interpretation is wrong and Roet should have an issue walking with a necromancer, I can create another concept so you can play what you want :)

OK, Fighter/Monk, Samurai, Paladin, Cleric. All classes that get 2+INT skill ranks.

Looks like we need some guys with a lot of skills. Akurna really has hardly any. I need my FCB for hit points. Maybe a bard? Rogue?

Also looks like we need an full arcane caster.

GM Crayfish: Is item crafting going to be allowed? I'm not sure I can do it because I am pretty feat-starved.

GM Crayfish: Also: any breaks on feat taxes?

About Akurna:
* Her main schtick is raising undead creatures, mostly skeletons and zombies. At 5th level this will start to take off. But it costs expensive material components.
* She has a pretty MAD build. Her WIS is only 16. This means she doesn't get a lot of bonus spells and won't be throwing too many around. At 3rd level she will have 7 spells including domain spells.
* Her skills are pretty weak. INT is only 13, and I need my FCB for hit points. Perception and Knowledge:Religion will need to be maxed, so a smattering of other skills with only 1 rank.
* She is NOT a healer. She channels negative energy so she has to prepare cure spells. I'm going to start with a wand of CLW just in case but you guys need to provide for your own healing. I will get Versatile Channel if I can spare the feat.
* She has a (Su) that works like command that is probably her magic combat option most of the time. She will also throw Javelins occasionally.
* I am not sure if I will be able to afford the selective Channel feat which means I may or may not be able to use negative channeling effectively in combat.

Roet Heineous wrote:

Akurna is also LN and worships Anubis, a LN god. There are paladins of Anubis too.

Anubis is the guardian of the dead but allows undead to be created in order to do things like protect tombs.

I figure that Anubis would have a big problem with uncontrolled undead, since they would just wander the countryside attacking things.

But a skeleton or a zombie under the control of a necromancer is more of an automaton. As long as it is purposed to something Anubis likes, then I figure He would be okay with that. Also, in light of the times, perhaps Anubis feels that an army is needed to fight the chaos that is coming, and it is within his rights to raise an army of the dead.

I don't really want to play an evil character though it could be cool to RP a struggle to remain non-evil in the dark times ahead.

GM: if you feel my interpretation of Anubis is wrong, please let me know.

Sczarni

What we need is more lawful characters with pride-swollen hearts.

People can play what they want. In this adventure, it's the characters that die and live through blood and fury, not the class of the character. And you tell them cleric, you tell them all the things they should ever know. And that old CLW; so unlike the sleeker heals. This cleric is dedicated.

As for crafting, sure. You find a place you can craft peacefully, and I will allow it to be done. Don't let anyone steal your shiny materials!

Feat taxes? In fact, yes, if you don't wanna take Combat Expertise, you don't have to. I don't like Combat Expertise, so you don't have to either! Or you can like it, that's all fine with me.

As far as Irori goes, he doesn't like Urgothoa. Urgothoa has undead stuff about her, but that doesn't really bother Irori. It's her hedonistic and unrestrained manners that he doesn't like. Irori isn't opposed to undead and could really care less. This sums up Irori, "Irori respects that other deities are different spiritual beings and that what is correct for him may not be so for them. As such, he tries to avoid interfering with other divine beings unless they threaten his work or his people" Roet is right to walk beside a necromancer, just as long as they don't starting chaos in a chaotic time.

Sczarni

Oh no, that sounds like Anubis. Those that dare stand before his gaze are rightfully felled. Anubis would like that his worshipers moved and brought the wild undead under their command to be put into the ground with the proper burial rites after they are not needed. Which is a perfectly LN thing to do.

But if you lose control, if you let their leashes slip, even for a moment, such terrible things could happen.

As a side note, what do you think Irori's work looks like? Is he just sitting around, meditating and growing wise, until someone spills their drink onto his lap? He has to get up and kick their ass, then go back to meditating, that's what a man does!

I'll bite on the Bard. Thinking LN Kitsune Dirge Bard. I'll get to working on it.

Hmmm, with all this Lawful going on maybe I should slide from Chaotic Neutral to Neutral...

Liberty's Edge

Hah, well I was also considering inquisitor. Besides though, party balance is a myth, as we have been informed by the DM!

But yeah, I think I want to try out http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/core-races/dwarf/forgemaster-cleric-dwarf/

character to follow soon!
