God for a Gunslinger

Advice

I'm looking for a god for my gunslinger characters. Are there any that are appropriate flavor wise? Also, are there any that have a firearm as a favored weapon?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Does your gunslinger use guns because they're the long arm of the law? Try Abadar.

...because they like complex machinery? Brigh perhaps. Or Torag.

...because they like big explosions? Gorum or Rovagug sound good. Maybe Nethys in a pinch.

...because an unreliable weapon appeals to the gambler in them? Nivi Rhombodazzle or Cayden Cailen might get their prayers.

...to be a Big Damn Hero? Any number of gods.

No firearms as favored weapons to my knowledge. There is a Black Powder inquisition though.

I don't know of any with the firearm as a favored weapon.

Frankly, I don't think it's that important to find a deity that's "appropriate" for a character who uses a gun, any more than to find one that's appropriate for a character who uses a sword. The character's personality, motivations, and country of origin generally matter a lot more than his choice of weapon.

The daemon harbinger Cixyron's favored weapon is the musket.

Sovereign Court

I don't think there's any one god that fits a character solely because they use firearms, I would like to know more about the character before recommending a deity.

why would the gods favor such a new fangle mortal device. new to their sense of time that is.
you could always try for divinity and choose firearms as your weapon of choice. but that would be homebrew.

the lone stranger. the god of gunslingers. he who walks into the sunset.

For a character focused on trick shots, competition, or marksmanship, arguments can be made for Shelyn, Kurgess (competition and sport), or Marishi (contests, sports).

Skode and Ketephys have hunting aspects to their areas of concern.

I'm actually knocking some ideas around for a Maverick|Mysterious Stranger / Picaroon Swashbuckler / Devoted Muse build. Gun Kata mixed with dancing for the flavor of it.

He is a GM baby, so I'm having a little trouble getting a grip on who he is. Part of my search for a god is to give me inspiration into his personality.

He is being formed from the chronicles collected running a bunch of pirate scenarios in the shackles. So I am definitely going ex-pirate. He will be a Ratfolk Gulch Gunner Gunslinger. He has a two level dip in monk and a dip in swashbuckler. I know, lots of dipping. He is not being built so much for function, as style. The gulch gunner is described as an up close and personal gunslinger. He gets things like, Flash & Shock that give a bonus to AC because you are discharging a weapon so close to a foe the blast disorients them. They also get Powder Burns, an ability that allows them to set adjacent foes on fire with muzzle flash. They regain grip by triggering AoOs by firing while in melee. Heck, at high levels they get an ability called Belly Shot that causes extra damage if you can literally press your gun against a foe before discharging it.

That just screams ship combat to me.

He will dual-wield. Sometimes two guns and sometimes gun and sword. He'll have quick draw and a bunch of fire and forget double barrel pistols for his off hand.

In that case, he might be a worshipper (or ex-worshipper) of Besmara the Pirate Queen.

Ugh. I really tried to like gulch gunner, but having to provoke AoO's from firing adjacent to foes to get your grit back is patently ridiculous. It pretty much guarantees you have to be an AC monster to be viable, which is pretty crazy for a ranged character. Anyway, back on topic, Besmara fits if he still identifies as a pirate or Cayden Cailyn if he is a brash daring devil may care hero.

I made a Ratfolk Gunslinger/Inquisitor of Asmodeus a while back. Asmodeus' pentagram hung on a chain from his pistol, and he was a contract killer (LN). It felt very right.

Like others have said, there's really no one answer, just like there's not a "Fighter" god; look at your gunslinger as a person, and ask why they pray.

I see him as brutally efficient. His weapons are tools.

I see him as possibly being a formerly evil character that had a change of heart. Probably not quite good yet, but at least developing sympathy and compassion. I see him as someone who might risk his life to save a damsel in distress or rescue kids from a burning orphanage, but would be annoyed by them if he had to talk to them.

Almost sounds like a Gorum worshiper, although he is a bit more about heavy armor and melee.

Gorum seems to be all about "HONOR!" and "GLORY!" rather than "whatever gets the job done fastest". I think guns fit Abadar more than any other core deity, for the same reason crossbows are his favored weapon. It's the weapon of civilization: A mechanical device that (at least, in the real world) allows just anyone, with little training and no special strength, to inflict on the mightiest warrior an ignominious death from afar. Arrows are carefully crafted by skilled tradesmen, whereas guns use a simple cast lead or iron ball, and powder mixed from common substances: Again, something just anyone can do without any special talent or long training process. Mass-produced tools wielded by faceless conscripts, against whom strength, skill, and honor suddenly don't mean a damn thing anymore. From that perspective they're anathema to someone like Gorum.

He's chaotic neutral. He's got lots of wiggle room.
