Why is Adowyn not available in OP?

Pathfinder Adventure Card Society

As far as I'm aware, WotR Adowyn and WotR Crowe are the only characters from a base set prior to MM that are currently not confirmed to be playable in OP at some point, as there is no means to unlock them yet, and neither class deck is announced (as compared to the Magus, who is also not available yet, but will be once the class deck hits the shelves).

For Crowe, the reason is that there is not really a class deck covering arcane/melee yet, and it was hinted at his likely unlockable inclusion in the upcoming Magus Deck, which makes a lot of sense and takes care of him.

What I don't understand is the lack of availability for Adowyn, since she would easily fit into the Ranger class deck. The reason I'm making this thread is that I just bought 3-4, which features the 3rd unlockable class deck for Mavaro as a reward, which I feel is a strange priority given Adowyns exclusion so far. I think its cool that Mavaro has the possibility to choose between class decks, but at this point, I wonder if Adowyns lack of availability is just an oversight, or if there is a deeper reason involved?

It would be cool to see her unlocked at some point :)

Seconding the request for the ability to play Adowyn in OP.

Maybe a Hunter deck is planned.

We only give out so many unlocks per season; 1 or 2 pretty much. Mavaro's multiple unlocks are basically still just 1 unlock from my perspective.

As for Adowyn and the Ranger deck, I hope we can do better. Using the Ranger deck, she'd have to start with a melee weapon, there aren't enough basics for her to start with / have a choice, etc.

The Inquisitor deck would be a much better choice for Adowyn. Lots of ranged weapons, items like Archer's Bracers and Efficient Quiver, etc.

Thanks for the answer, Keith; that puts things into perspective. When I looked through the deck list, I completely forgot that only the B boons with the basic trait are available. I agree that it makes sense to hold her back then; I also wasn't aware that you try to limit the number of unlocks per season.

While that is true concerning weapons and items, the Inquisitor deck has a serious lack of cards with the Animal trait. The only ally with the Animal trait I see is the Riding Horse, which would make her Pack Leader role borderline useless. The only class decks that focus on animals are Druid, Ranger and Witch, so from the available decks, at most the Ranger really qualifies in my opinion.

What is sounds like is that we need a Hunter deck.

And given that Hunters can really stand out from druids w/ cohort animal companions, I'm all for this.

Um... Harsk and Arabundi also have to start with melee weapons :(. I hold out for hope that the base class decks get some type of tweak to make them more playable at lower levels. Or in place of that, being able to use something like using DriveThruCards to supplement them officially.

Class Deck Lini gets a weapon slot for a d4 Strength weapon. Channa Ti, who is completely legal, has to put in a melee weapon on d4 Strength. I think we'll have to get used to accepting clunkiness in certain cases.

I think part of it too is that after the Magus class deck, there are 3 story character based decks (even though Hell's Vengeance 2 isn't announced, it's pretty obvious), thus making us think that you're not releasing class-based class decks for a while.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've been hoping the original class decks would be given supplements for well over a year now. Every time I want to play Seoni, I'm reminded how bland her class deck is compared to all the recent class decks.

It would be nice to have a supplemental product released with new cards to be implemented in the first wave of class decks. Even a few cards each could make a big difference. Then rangers (and an Adowyn unlock) could make use of a Basic bow. And the older classes could also make use of some of the newer blessings.

I love the Inquisitor class deck, but my experience with playing Zadim over 4 Adventures (SotRi; I'll put out a writeup once I finish) has been that he's been rejecting anything but weapons because there are so many weapons and so little of everything else.

Items are okay; allies, in particular, are a problem. Blessings too to a certain extent. (Pharasma is not super useful for a non-caster.)

I'm also dreaming of a Simoun that can pack her deck with knives, but that's a separate topic.

Looks like a Hunter deck has been announced yesterday, so that takes care of her!
Now, if you consider all thr available rewards and hints from lone shark, yoon is currently the only character that is not yet mentioned to be playable - nice!

You're going to enjoy this.

Yes, that's great!
Looks like by February next year, every character that has been released so far will be playable with a class deck!
The only hurdle now is a reward for crowe to be played in the magus deck, but there is still AD6 of SoPluTo and a new season for the next potential base set, and in homegames, he can already be played that way.
Awesome that the catching up is done :)
