Kobold Wizard

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Wizards are probably my least confident class; for some reason, they make my brain sad trying to work them out. Still, I know completely ignoring a class because it's harder to understand takes away from my ability to enjoy Pathfinder to it's fullest.

All that being said, wizards seem like really good support classes, if not outright monster group killers. Combine that with my love of little kobolds and it makes sense to have a little guy running about tossing spells out.

Now, everything I've read says if I want to go a-blasting, a Sorcerer would be the way to go. But digging deeper into arcane schools, it seems like the Admixture Evocation school would be the more versatile and handier option (I hope you have immunity to EVERYTHING!!!) The goal of this little guy is NOT to dish out huge bowls of whoop-ass to the BBEG; the martial classes can do that far better then anything magical that I can conjure. No no no, his job is to clear a path through the mooks for the heavy hitters to move in and finish the job. And it seems to suit a kobold quite well, being little sidekick types.

Without further ado...

Hmm, ok. First off, burning hands drops off rather quickly - maybe stick that magical lineage on something that'll stay good longer, like fireball?

You REALLY don't want a CON penalty. Drop CHA to get that back up.

Your initiative could use some work. It's vital to go first as a wizard.

Admixture is good. You'll probably want to drop Enchantment and Necromancy, picking necromancy back up at 9th with the Opposition Research Arcane Discovery.

Arcane bond is probably better off on a ring. Not easily lost, there are some really good enchanted rings, etc.

You don't need to prepare Ray of Frost 3 times. It's a cantrip - you only need it prepared once to cast it infinitely. Maybe prestidigitation and detect magic?

Currently, your burning hands will have really weak damage, even against hordes. Consider packing Color Spray instead.

Also, what other spells will you have in your book?

Wizard as a "support" class? The wizard is king!

Dark Archive

These are not 3.5 Kobolds, OP. PF Kobolds are just crap. They are designed to be crap.

Also, you'll never carry all that stuff and a heavy crossbow with Str 6.

Revised a bit working off of DualJay's suggestions (thanks, DJ). However, CHA is as low as it allows legally (he's meant to be played as smart, quick-witted, but extremely gullible). CON is just something I'll probably have to suck up and deal with which shouldn't be too hard, given he's a dodgy little nut. I know it hurts my Fort save, but... eh...

Also, yes, support class. Martial combat is more my forte, but I find one of the best ways to overcome a foe is to step into there shoes and see what they're good at and where the weakspots are.

Maybe try a 8/15/10/18/10/7 array. Even then, you'd get

Flare burst is a really awful spell. Dazzled is a useless condition and flare burst allows a FORT negate. Snowball is a conjuration spell that has a chance of staggering, and is much better.

Second, even with 8 str, that's simply too much stuff. You won't be able to carry it all and stay with a light load.

I've actually tried building a Blasting Wizard as well.

So, the main thing would be to change your Magical Lineage to a later spell, especially if you plan on running this to higher levels when you can metamagic your blasts.

The second part is to ensure that you can metamagic your blasts in order to make them scale pretty nice.

Yeah, I'm just using it at the moment as a base. I'll probably have to trim out a lot of stuff to keep from getting encumbered.

Also, I'll take the advice everyone's said and switch to fireball for my magical lineage. And big thanks for everyone who's contributed to this advice. It's a big help, and like I said, wizards just make my head spin for some reason.
