Occultist

Advice

Liberty's Edge

I would like to build an occultist that does these three things as the best in the world: read minds, manipulate them, and defend against attacking my mind.

Any suggestions on which path to take?

He would not need to have armor or weapons. I want him to be able to use his mind much in the way that Professor X does. Also, if he can do it without other people noticing, that would be great as well.

Why Occultist? This sounds more the realm of the Psychic, right?

WELL, needless to say, you want all your Implements to be of the Divination, Enchantment, and Abjuration schools, for starters.

I'm not sure if you can expect to be "the best in the world" at those things as an Occultist (though you can still excel). The best way to be "the best in the world" at those things is to instead be either a Psychic or a Mesmerist.

Professor X is definitely a Psychic, not an Occultist (and Occultists are absolutely meant to use armor and weapons - their primary spiel, after all, is supreme mastery of magic items of all kinds).

In this game, everybody wants weapons of some kind, a decent token at least (and possibly armor, since it doesn't interfere with psychic powers at all) - what do you expect to do when you run into Undead and Constructs?

As for doing it without other people noticing, that's quite easy for them for the most part - with the possible exception of things that require expensive material components, psychic powers are entirely cerebral (requiring thought and emotion, rather than verbal and somatic, components). Make your character good at some form of stealth (if you think it's worth it to shoulder the opportunity cost of that - there's a few traits that make Stealth a class skill, or you could get a wand of invisibility, and better still a Ring of Invisibility at high levels), and they'll be very difficult for most others to detect. Even more fitting for such a character, you could also look into "social invisibility" powers (the Silence from Dr. Who are a stand-out example of that), although off the top of my head, I can't think of what Pathfinder has to offer in that regard.

The Deceitful and Cunning Caster feats (or something similar) are officially required to hide your spellcasting in PF, even if you're using thought and emotion components.

Liberty's Edge

I meant out of the Occult Adventures book. He can be any class out of it. I was thinking mesmerist but why would you say psychic? Sorry for the confusion.
