Wyverns' Demise

Liberty's Edge

Looking for some suggestions on how to make a minor encounter a bit longer/enjoyable for my party. Right now, I have a mated pair of wyverns nesting up a mountain cliff. They have been attacking travelers on a desert trade route. They are hungry after all and they cannot travel too far from their egg.

I am going to have the party climb through a sandstone cavern that has been made through millions of years of water washing down. It will have rained far from the party and they will have noticed it, but hopefully not put two and two together. I plan on having a flash flood hit them while they are climbing up.

That is all I have, aside from an egg in a cave and two very angry dragons. Any suggestions?

Have ths wyverns attack during the flood and drown anyone in heavy armor.

An invisible imp setting off hazards and traps.

Build it up with sinkholes and quicksand.

There's something in the quicksand! AND IT JUST GRABBED MY ANKLE!!!

Undead failed hatchlings. Replace poisonous stingers with whip-like appendages that trip and disarm as AoOs.

Tunnels that require crawling and squeezing.

Wouldn't the flash flood also threaten the wyvern eggs? That could open up a diplomatic option for the party ("hey guys, I know a secure nesting place several miles west from here. And that orc tribe over there would provide enough nourishment for you and your young ones...").

If it is a bigger cave system, the approaching flood could scare other creatures living in the cave towards the PCs.

A fight in close quarters takes away one of the big advantages that flying creatures have. Maybe it is some special sort of wyvern with a breath weapon (in place of poison bite) that allows them to freeze or evaporate water (freezing the PCs into place or creating hot steam)?

I like the idea of another animal fleeing the water. Hrm, what can it be. I am using a giant snake and a giant lizard earlier in the day and I do not have scorpion minis yet...at least not until Apirl.

Carrion crawlers and rust monsters that feed on the wyvern's leftovers?

Liberty's Edge

Carrion Crawlers would work. I have 4 minis of those. Thanks.

I was also thinking of having the wyverns dropping rocks while the party climbs.
