I really hate to hear that, MMC.
I have two dogs, a mostly pitbull mix named Buster and a Plott hound mix called Rosie. I'd be pretty lost without them. I'd love to have a cat (I've always been a cat person, but I rescued these two and they now completely occupy my heart). Buster is the gentlest, sweetest pibble in the world, except that he doesn't like cats. I feed two stray cats on my carport (they're both tuxedo cats and I canNOT tell them apart, so I call them The Copycats). Last night, after 6 months of feeding them, they let me get close enough to hear them purr while eating. I've yet to be able to pet one, but they're gradually, very gradually, letting me get closer to them.

This is somewhat of a pipe dream of mine... My girlfriend of three years and myself are both studying chemical engineering at the moment, and once both of us have our degrees we should have quite a bit of spare money about.
We plan on running a somewhat strange operation. We want to take a house, turn it into a cafe, and then bring in dogs from the local pound 1 month before they are due to be put down.
The dogs get at least there last month full of attention and love, and hopefully being exposed to them in the cafe, somebody will adopt one or two.
We also want to run a hamster sanctuary, as you would be amazed at how poorly most of them are treated.

Strange in a good way. The world could use more of that sort of strange.
Years ago I adopted a hamster from a student whose hamster had too many babies. I named him Archimedes. He used to run all over my shoulders and lap while I graded papers. The thought of mistreated hamsters makes me sad.
I have a daughter who wants to be a vet so our family always has a menagerie. Currently we have a tiny poodle, cat, frog, leopard gecko, corn snake, and guinea pig. She just lost her two rats to old age. :(

I have my two cats, a big calico (Rosie, 8 years) and a little grey longhair (Misty, 3 years).
Rosie was a package deal with her sister (Reese), originally, but she got sick a few years back and we had to put her down. I adopted Misty not long afterwards because Rosie was so lonely. Thankfully they've bonded well. =)
Rosie is currently deforming my spine by being half on the arm of my chair, and half behind me where I made the mistake of bending in to type.
At 16 lbs (and yes, that's her healthy weight, says the vets) she is more able to muscle in than your average cat.
I've had other pets (dogs, hamsters, turtles) but none have lasted as long as these two, nor any have I gotten so close to. They do a decent job of keeping me sane, when they aren't actively driving me the other way (Misty has decided she's an outside cat now, and goes on little adventures during the day).

My girlfriends current hamster is called Archemedes! He is a golden-ish syrian.
I have always held the belief that normal people scare me... And the best way to judge the character of a person is to see how they treat animals.Today I got seriously peeved at someone. Found their dog wondering around in the street, no collar, or chip. Only reason we found out who it was, was because the vet had the dog on record as it had been found on the street only this Saturday past and the lady came to fetch it.

Nah, just caring people.
When I was about 13, my dad bought this guy's entire hamster city for me as an early bday present. I started with 12 hamsters and ended up with nearly 100, expanding the city and taking as good a care of them as I could. Then one day one of the connecting tubes came loose. By the time I discovered this, nearly every hamster had escaped. Because I kept the city in an outbuilding on the farm, they spread out to the barns and even into the house. For the rest of the years we lived on that farm we'd catch as many hamsters in mousetraps as we did mice, if not more.

hamies are good at...making more hamies...
I miss my hamster that ended up super jacked from running on his wheel for like 10 hours a day. He was an odd fellow.
I had one that would climb up the sides of his cage to then hang upside down from one of the little cage bars at the top. He'd do that for hours.

My family home (in the 'burbs) was locally called 'the Zoo' because we took in any animal that needed healing or a home - dogs, cats, fish, birds, rabbits, possums, and squirrels mostly. Now, I live in an apt with strict pet rules so my wife and I rescue small, older, dogs in need. Our current child is a 13 year old Dachshund named Mr. Farley. He's 170 lbs of personality packed into 17 pounds of doggie-body.

I used to be a big dog snob, but I've learned to love little ones too. It's more the owners who don't train them to not bark constantly that annoy me.

I wonder if anyone here has been involved with keeping tropical fish? Been kind of intrigued with the idea of creating a big 100 gallon freshwater community tank. Something to create a bit of life during cold desolate Northern winters.
Probably wouldn't start investing in one until next year, but something I have been thinking about.

My fiance has a border collie sharpie (sp?) mutt. Hes quiet listens well and just all around great. She got him when he was 1 with her ex BF. A year before she met me they had a falling out. The ex demanded to take Jax the dog with him. She wanted ex gone so agreed.
A month later she was browsing the human society page and saw Jax. She went and got him immediately. POS ex took the dog and dropped him off to be a dick. She thinks he intended to keep the dog but it didnt work out in his new place. Even so this waste of skin didnt bother to ask her if she wanted him back :(
Happy to say Jax and I are good buddies now :)

Just because someone asked me to:
I have a lovely dog named Duke. He was recently neutered going on now 8 from our local animal shelter. I love him to death. (Mostly because he's a very affectionate dog towards me.)
Anyways I've had other dogs, but he's the current one.
We also have my brother female pure breed border collie named...Concho. (It wasn't his choice folks! It's what she was named before he got her.) She is currently 15 with some health problems but honestly still the healthiest 15 year old border collie I've seen. So there's that.
