Rules Questions

Does spellcraft work off the caster's primary casting stat, or is it fixed to work off int only?

Always Int. Has nothing to do with being a caster.

Without the ability to cast detect magic, it's uses become more limited.

I recently realized that alchemists get Identify on their extract list, and can use wands of any spell that's an alch extract, so they can use it as a wand.

Absolutely. Identifying magic items is the most important use for Spellcraft and, except for scrolls, that is very hard for non-casters (wand of detect magic, anyone?).

There are other uses, like the sometimes rather important matter of identifying spells as they are cast. Perhaps not what most PC martials find resources to invest in, but the occasional NPC spy or noble might want to know when Charm Person is cast.

I just tried to make it clear that non-casters can still invest in Spellcraft, because I've previously seen those who thinks the can't.

I find it very useful for my martial's to know what spells have been cast, not only to know what's going on, but to help identify the type of caster they might be facing. One primary example of where it came in handy is when I faced someone using Shadow Evocation. Identifying the spell correctly is proof that the spell is not real.

Still, I only put it invest in it for characters for whom it makes RP sense. So my Ranger's have it, but my Barbarian does not.

Spellcraft is different than Knowledge Arcana.

Spellcraft is an INT based skill. It works without Detect Magic as it is a skill and revolves around spell use. Spellcraft is also used to identify the properties of magic items in your possession through the use of spells such as detect magic and identify. The DC of this check varies depending upon the task at hand. To Identify a spell cast the DC is 15+Spell level, so 11 (5 ranks +3(INT) +3 class skill) should net most spells on average.
