How does the average joe summon a demon / devil?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

In order to sell their soul or make a request how do normal NPCs and Outsiders get together? Is there a phone number to call or something?

The "average joe" cannot summon an outsider at all -- but he can give off signs that he would welcome contact with such a being. If an outsider who for some reason is on the Material Plane happens by chance to locate him, then he may be more willing to approach him than he would a commoner of good alignment (who upon seeing a fiend approaching would be frantically calling out to some good deity for deliverance).

The average Joe isn't worth the trouble of getting to the Material Plane for. Once you can provide transportation, then you're worth the attention. And, as mentioned, an outsider that is already here will be more accessible. They've only got so long before they're kicked out, and easy corruption/destruction/soul-acquisition is more appealing. In Cheliax, it's probably a matter of being powerful enough to be useful or desperate enough to make a very bad trade.

The point here is that you are wondering how they get ahold of an outsider without being a high enough level (and a caster at that) to do planar ally and the like?

I am pretty sure that is why they introduced occult rituals in Occult Origins.

Rituals are basically long and complicated ways of getting spell like effects without the necessary training and ability. It mostly just takes a bit of knowledge (or just dumb luck) to adhere to the rules of a ritual to get it to work. Of course, most rituals would be impractical for players (since we prefer the 'just do a standard action' kind of thing, without the need for fetch quests to complete the spell) but are perfect for your average insane NPC with too much time on his hands.

So level 1 common Joe Smoe can get his hands on a 10 HD demon as long as he is willing to sacrifice enough virgins/ babies/ nuns/ pumpkins/ whatever on the night of the full moon.

Of course, since he doesn't have the needed knowledge, he doesn't know the important information like 'how to properly put up a ward to make sure the demon doesn't kill him', 'this was obviously written by a demon in order to trap idiots', or 'you put the candles in the wrong place adn now everything is going to explode'.

Discover and perform an occult ritual? I'm not entirely sure as to what you're looking for. For character backstory or npc plot it's whatever you want it to be.

lemeres basically answered it. How to do those stories of normal people summoning something beyond them like idiots.

Join a decent cult.

*Make sure you check their social calendar before joining.

Also check whether you are on the list of preferred human sacrifices.

Just saying- virgins might want to stay away from the volcano god cult.

There is this thing about saying "Pazuzu" a few times....

By Golarian Mythos, you can go to hell without a contract, Pharasma just has to decide that that is where you belong. That there are Influencers all about the material planes is pretty much an environmental thing. Getting individual attention would mostly require being important due to ability or position.

it depends on how good your singing voice is - try a few verses of "It hastur be me..." or "The Devil went down to Georgia"

In other words, be wary of unprotected sects.

Also avoid teen sects. Those boys just want one thing- to offer you up to their dark lord.

And then 9 months later- BAM- you have to deal with having an Omen baby that will totally run you down the stairs on his trike.

This thread's going straight to Hell.

Aha, this post started in hell, and is going to hell by a straight path.
Conclusive proof that Golarian is in a finite, curved space.
Sheldor owes me dinner.

Go to Rituals.

Your average joe has to get enough like minded cultists, and make a good enough investments, to do it right, or as you said, pretty much turn a devil loose on the countryside.

In 3.5 (Book of Vile Darkness pg 26), you can sacrifice creatures (Int at least 3) vs a chart.

DC 25 as Least Planar Ally, 30 for Planar Ally, 35 for Greater Planar Ally (either serves for 1 hour/HD of victim.
This is a Knowledge Religion check.

Easy bonuses:
Hour long ceremony: +1
Altar +2
10 followers +1
100 followers +1 (stacks with 10 Followers)
Subject Good Aligned +1
Sacrifice has HD 1-5 +1
Torture victim a day before +1

So you have easily: 7 bonuses (8 is have 90 more followers) with 10 dudes following.
Knowledge check: 1d20+Rank +Int +7 means not too hard to do DC 25.

Yeah, 1 skill rank into a class skill and 10 int means you are basically just trying to beat a 14 with your d20.

You are still very likely to die horribly, but those are at least good betting odds.

How does the Average Joe get 100 people to take part in live sacrifice and torture?
10 would be a stretch.

10 would be a stretch.

Even without the followers, that would only make the roll a 16 with the previous estimate. Still well within 'acceptable crazy cultist' range (ie- "There is a 20% chance that I will get it to help me rather than dying horribly. Good odds")

Liberty's Edge

Very carefully?

Or luckily.

Generally, summoning demons and the like is considered a 'bad idea', so I won't speak on the summoner's critical thinking skills.

I take it from an old What's New from Dragon. very easy! Simple summoning spells abound. Control is the summoner's problem! Yes, we had a devil leaving all kinds of nasty little scrolls all about.
