I too will be starting a new game of Skyrim .

The lazy good for nothing Jarl of NowhereTownButWeHaveAGreatCemetaryVille sent me out for craft brews.

Somehow I don't think my talents (f+*~ing rampaging) are being utilized correctly...

My game's been on hiatus. Might play again soon.

My suggestion, good Cap'n, is to ignore him for now. He has thanes who can do his beer run for him I'm sure. If you're truly annoyed, bring some back and drink them in front of him, I'm sure he won't mind.

What a bunch of ale-swilling drunkards these Nords are!

Turns out I found his brews while pillaging Ustengrav.

After he gives me my property, then maybe I'll murder him.

Don't know about you lot, but Boris gets all tingly at the sight of Maven Black-Briar lounging on her throne.

Is that so very wrong?

Oh right, it hung up last time so I still gotta pillage Ustengrav.

Ustengrav is too boring, it needs more excitement or something.

Boris has accompanied the sexey vampire lady into the afterlife. We are searching for her mommy, and everything around us is a lovely shade of blue.

I spent the last two days building up my house.

This time, I'm killing and grabbing everything.

So far in my trophy room I have a saber cat, dragon skull, and big f@$%ing spider with a goat head above the doors.

Also, whoever is breaking in when I'm gone is an excellent baker.

Why I decided every room needed a goat head mounted on the wall is beyond me.

Why not?

Goats are evil, and scary.

I should know, my parents tried to start a goat farm.

It didn't work out because goats are also huge a$#~#$&s.

Given that Skyrim goats seldom manage to die to random attacks and even kill trolls, it would follow then that goat heads on the walls indicate your level of butt-kicking power to that random baker who visits your home.

Random kids keep hinting they need a place to live, and I'm like "listen kids, I have goat heads in every room and someone breaking in when I'm gone and baking shit, it's no place for children"

Boris wants Thalmor heads on his wall but doubts that this is possible, even if 'Hearthfire' is installed.

Whilst traipsing through the steam beds and one finds a plucky vein of iron one must remember to keep a wary eye out for any dragons.

Lest they breathe frost on your backside whilst you mine.

I looted the tomb, vanquished the necromancer, and got the beacon lady's pretty sword.

What did she want now?

Vegetables bathed in sunlight...

Whatever she said, I learned desecrated corpses are an easy source of cash.

Boris and Serana are in the Forgotten Vale, which Gelebor remembered, luckily, and it is really frigging cold. You can tell vampires are immune to Frost damage - why else would she be able to swan about in little more than a corset and stylish cape without constantly complaining?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Speaking of cold, Boris has just entered the Glacial Crevice.

Serana, what?

No, Serana, I didn't -

Serana, I said I didn't!

Serana, will you please listen?!

Serana, that's what it's called! Look, it's there on the map!

{Sigh} Ohhh, why must vampire women always take things so personally?

Dear Skyrim Rampagers,

Somehow about a week ago, I just decided to double click on that "Skyrim" icon on my desktop, for reasons that escape me.

I'm now a good ways into the Civil War and have learned I am Dragonborn and am mounting wolf heads on my walls in Lakeview Manor and can't stop playing.

Help.

PS - Though in most RPGs I usually "play good," I decided that rather than pretend I am a hero -- I just decided I am an obedient soldier/assassin who does odd jobs to fund better equipment and is otherwise, outside of obedience to her military duties and personal contracts, a psychopath, which is why I walk around tearing the wings off butterflies and steal the weapons off my dead enemies to use against other people. It feels refreshing to finally play a character whose actions internally make total sense within the world of Skyrim.

And no, it's not that this is much different from my other Skyrim characters, just that I'm being honest about it this time.

PS: I know that sometimes randomly corpses will land in front of you from out of the sky, probably because a giant punted them.

But why did a GIANT just land in front of me from out of the sky, with no loot? Who punted IT? *gets very worried*

Very refreshing that someone admits they're just a plain ol' killer in Skyrim. I've made it a point to wipe out the hunters I find myself. They have nothing I want, serve no useful purpose, and say nothing I need to hear. I can kill animals for parts myself. Though I'm more of a wandering mage-smith than anything else.

My daughter Penny recently bought Skyrim for our PS 4 so I spent my birthday weekend a few weeks ago and then my Labor Day weekend playing Skyrim.

I was originally going to go with an Orc named Toot Toot McBumbersnazzle, a travelling minstrel with a song in his heart and funny tattoos on his head.

But I wasn't used to the PS 4 controller so I ended up a nord woman with war paint named only Toot Toot, so I'm going with that, and naming everything like that (my dwarven soul siphoning hand axe I named Yum Yum, my bow I named Ow Ow!).

I still can't make myself pick sides in the rebellion as both sides are unsympathetic douche bags (I blame the Bethesda, they're so caught up in giving both sides flaws in their games they forget to give them redeeming qualities).

I'm glad to see everyone survived their summer! I started back to work full-time again after five years as the stay at home parent (our oldest is old enough to babysit the youngest (with a sizable bounce in her allowance of course) it's going pretty great!

My first playthrough was mostly completionist EXCEPT I decided for whatever reason not to touch the Civil War quest with a 10 foot pole. I was being imbued with near godly power, the petty quibbles of mortals were beneath me. Plus, because I followed the main quest a lot early on, I felt like "the world is going to end" trumped the problem of letting people worship Talos or not. What I enjoyed in that playthrough is that if you leave the Civil War relatively undecided (or at least haven't finished it)...

Spoiler:

In the main quest you can negotiate a truce between the two sides and do it in such a way that leaves the Civil War at a standstill

I later played a very quick playthrough to see how the Stormcloak side felt, and in this playthrough I'm aiding the Imperials just to get to know some NPCs better and it's totally not because Legate Rikke's hot.

My character (in my head) was an Imperial assassin who got caught on the wrong end of a bad mission undercover and sort of accidentally almost ended up being executed. Fortunately the intervention of the dragon at Helgen allowed her to rebuild some credit with the Imperials.

She hates the Thalmor, though (as I've learned many Imperials do and are just hoping to keep the Empire united so they have a chance of fighting the Aldmeri Dominion later), so the plan is to win the war to re-unite the Imperials, and then do everything she can once the security of the Empire is guaranteed to murder every Thalmor in Skyrim. Along with a few butterflies and any idiot who calls her names. (Via the main and Dark Brotherhood quests, this should be pretty fun.)

The evil thing I've been doing this time is I animal allegiance shout at goats as I'm engaging with dragons.

Also, hiding, shooting a giant in the face with an arrow, shouting at his wooly mammoth, and then running away is a lot more fun than it ought to be.

Dear Diary,

The Jarl of Whiterun named me Thane for killing the dragon, and assigned a girl named Lydia to be my housecarl. She looks like someone who would snark amusingly while I handed her stuff to carry, which could be amusing, but I had Uthgerd with me, so I said hello, asked her about her role as housecarl, and then, only with two sentences of conversation exchanged, I left to figure out how I was going to organize a trip to Windhelm to deliver an axe to Ulfric AND answer the Graybeards' summons near Ivarstead--while meanwhile continuing to set up shop in my new house. I noticed Uthgerd, for a half-drunk brawler who decided we were sword companions for life after I punched her in the face repeatedly, surprisingly kept a really nice, neat house, so I asked her to keep MY house for me instead, she agreed. I left her and Rayya to guard the manor--pretty sure there are both bandits and a dragon nearby--and then went back to Whiterun to get Lydia since she had no place to live except the Jarl's house, since I can't afford more property right now.

I approached Lydia, hunched down by herself at the grand hall table in Dragonsreach. She stood up, face lighting up at my approach, and said "I'm so glad to have a friend like you." And then she handed me what appeared to be all of the wealth she had in the world, which was about 7 gold pieces.

I somehow have a feeling the two sentences I said to her were one sentence more than anyone else ever shared with the poor girl.

If I had a heart to break, it might have. Anyway, not really one for friends but having just one can't hurt, right? Especially one so deft with a greataxe.

Chicken - Epic NPC Man

I got the Skyrim bug again a few weeks ago and I installed the special edition and modded it up, and found my favorite mod of all time - Legacy of the Dragonborn. It adds a museum in Solitude that has displays for over 3200 items (it supports a number of mods that add weapons and armor, other "treasure hunt" items, etc.), has several associated quests, allows you to form the Explorer's Guild, adds excavation sites to many of the Falmer, Dwemer, and ancient Nord ruins - it's amazing, and it has totally changed how I play the game (the Live Another Life mod now has an option to start as the newly appointed head of the Explorer's Guild, which is how I began my game, although Legacy works with any start - you will find a letter on the counter of some shops announcing the opening of the museum if you use a different start). Someone commented on Nexus that this mod allows you to play Indiana Jones in Skyrim and that's a perfect description of it. I can't recommend it highly enough - definitely add in the mods it supports, and you can basically turn Skyrim into one giant treasure hunt.

I love the idea of that, but I do not want to add too much new content or it will only increase the compulsion to play. I want to feel okay departing what I'm doing if Kingmaker's reviews are good or My Time at Portia ever hits final release.

I've only got a couple mods installed... I think the only one that adds any content is the Parthurnaax Dilemma, and that isn't much. I had one of those "your character feels the cold" mods but it looks like it's no longer supported in the Workshop.

Poor Lydia, I take her out of the castle once and we get attacked by a bear, troll and Blood Dragon all at once.

I felt so bad I've never taken her with again.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Eh, Lydia can handle it. Besides, in that scenario the bear should take care of the troll and the dragon, and then should be wounded enough you'll be able to handle the bear between the two of you.

Also her comments on Solstheim are funny.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Speaking of Lydia, I decided to see if I could attack Alduin in a cutscene where he's raising one of the dragons back from the dead (in the main questline), knowing things might end poorly.

Alduin didn't react and I did no damage, but he apparently does register as an attackable creature, because then Lydia started zapping Alduin with the staff of lightning bolt I had given her. It didn't do anything, but it made the cutscene hilarious to watch. It apparently cuts short the dialogue where Alduin tells the dragon to attack.

"Sahloknir, rise ag--" KZAK, KZAK - "I said rise agai-" KZAK!

Have to remember you have to be careful about who you attack around Lydia (or any companion, really).

I get that, certainly. You can add Legacy of the Dragonborn without adding a bunch of other things - it will just make the number of items you can find smaller. It also handles situations where you find an item that you have to give to someone to complete a quest (e.g., Amren's father's sword). There is a crafting table in the museum which you can use to create replicas of those items, and then you display the replica in the museum.

For myself, I've played the base game + Dragonborn + Dawnguard enough that I had gotten bored with it. I am not someone who will find it interesting to play the same game with a different character (unless there is new content specific to that character). I need more quests, more content, to be inspired to play again. Adding this mod (and all the supported mods) has provided that inspiration. Every dungeon becomes a "what cool item for the museum can I find in this place" encounter.

There is a "natural history" wing where you can use (for example) a mammoth snout and tusk, and a giant's toe to make a big "giant and mammoth" display, or a hagraven claw and feather to do the same for that creature, like you might find a display of the Pacific Northwest forest with stuffed wolves and moose in a museum in Seattle. There is a display stand for all the different types of gems you find. There are places to hang all the treasure maps, store all the books, armory displays on iron and steel and elven, etc. weapons and armor. There is a Hall of Lost Empires for all the Dwemer and Falmer and Ancient Nord stuff, with displays that are automatically added whenever you explore a Dwemer ruin or a Nord tomb (e.g, one for Labyrinthian) that have specific references to that place. As you complete big questlines such as the College of Winterhold, the museum will automatically get a display on the College added. There is a "not open to the public" area (and yes, people will come in and wander around the museum and make comments) where you can display all the less noble items you might have acquired (like the emperor's robes, or items associated with the Thieves' Guild). It's really amazing how much content there is.

On top of all of this, there is a whole safehouse which makes a great player home.

You definitely need to hang on to any interesting items you find before you get to the museum - you never know what there will be a display for. I restarted after 60 hours of play because I realized that I had sold off some items that I could have displayed and I couldn't find them again.

Matt, I haven't played Skyrim in a long time, so I'm out of the game on most of the mods. I'd love to hear what other mods you like that add new content to the game. I'm not necessarily interested in mods that are about changing the game mechanics, but new quests and story lines would be fun.

Sure - here are the ones I think are great(note: I am playing the Special Edition but most of these are available for the original Skyrim. I get all the mods from nexusmods.com):

- Legacy of the Dragonborn (as if it wasn't clear)
- Moonpath to Elsweyr (travel to the lands of the Khajit)
- The Forgotten City (solve a murder in an underground city)
- Immersive College of Winterhold (adds locations, quests, etc., to flesh out the college of magic)
- Helgen Reborn (rebuild Helgen after the dragon attack which opens the game)
- Forgotten Dungeons, Skyrim Underground, Immersive Dungeons, Easier Riders' Dungeon Pack, The Unfinished Business (each of these adds several new dungeons to Skyrim - some with quests, some just cool to explore)
- Beyond Skyrim - Bruma (sends you back to Cyrodil and the province of Bruma, from Oblivion)
- Falskaar (a whole new island with many quests)
- Qaxe's Questorium (over 100 new quests, voiced NPCs, covering several different quest lines)
- Vigilant (adds a whole quest line for the Vigilants of Stendarr - make sure you get the English language add-on as the original is in Japanese)
- Artifacts of Skyrim, Royal Armory:New Artifacts, New Treasure Hunt, Amulets of Skyrim, Hidden Treasures, Skyrim's Unique Treasures (add tons of new items to find scattered about Skyrim)
- Fossil Mining (now you can find cool fossils when you mine for ore)

Legacy of the Dragonborn works with most of these to provide displays for the new items you find.

I'll definitely recommend the Forgotten City and Beyond Skyrim: Bruma. I also enjoyed Falskaar immensely.

This is a tiny addition (it just modifies one quest) but I'd also suggest the Parthurnaax Dilemma. It makes a main quest loose end/option much more playable with a few different options that are more satisfying.

Dude, you don't need to convince me it's great. It sounded right up my alley the first time--sounds indeed like the kind of thing I wish Bethesda would add to its games as core content. Their strength is building great, explorable worlds, so why not do more to Just not looking for something to add hours to my playtime right now (even if it's just a tiny few using the barest of its features), that's all (I would totally get sucked into collecting shit for the museum which is exactly why I would avoid it right now (but not forever)). My comment wasn't a criticism of you or your mod preferences, and you don't need to "sell" me on it--maybe when I have time later I'll try it. It sounds like a really good mod.

As it is playing vanilla I'm amazed at stuff I'm noticing for the first time even though this is like my 4th or so character (I've only ever fully played through most of the game once though, so there's still a lot of stuff for me to uncover). This world is huge.

Any issues with loading them all at once? Last I looked at mods, I kept hearing that it's a good idea to get a mod-loader mod....

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Can someone explain to me why a horse (not Shadowmere, just an ordinary horse) keeps appearing next to me every time I use the stables, and sometimes when I fast travel? It is not marked as "steal" and the game thus seems to think it is mine.

I did not buy a horse. I once came across a golden horse whose owner had been killed by an atronach, and rode it until we were attacked by a bear and the bear killed it. I may have stolen someone's horse once, but it was very definitely stolen and I only used it temporarily.

What's even more weird/frustrating is when I ride the horse and then get off, it starts walking away. And sometimes it disappears entirely after an area transition even when it shouldn't. For example, I took the carriage to Whiterun. When I arrive, the horse is standing next to me. I hop on the horse, and ride it to the Whiterun gates. I enter Whiterun. When I leave Whiterun later, the horse is nowhere to be seen (but reappears when I then take the carriage to Winterhold).

I have seen no issues with having all of those loaded at once. I use the Nexus Mod Manager tool and it works great for, well, managing mods (especially if you are getting them off the Nexus site - it's usually one click to install them and a second click to activate them). I have something close to 100 mods currently installed (the ones I listed and a bunch of retexture mods, one or two gameplay mods), and it was easy to install them all with the NMM.

It's always worth reading the notes for the mod on the Nexus site - they will usually tell you if there is a potential for conflict with other well-known mods (and if there is a patch to handle it), or if there are any other things you need to watch for with the mod.

That is super cool. I was just slaughtering draugr the other day with that.

Seriously, they did an amazing job. If they're in Baltimore, MD, I hope they took it down to Bethesda's headquarters in Rockville to show it to them--it's not that far away.

I use it to slaughter draugr every day.

So, so many draugr.

Or at least, there was.

Who has two thumbs and made it through Labrynthianianian without using a single healing potion or dying.

This guy!

This go around I've been focusing more on bows, light armor and stealth, and less on summoning and big f#~$ing weapons and things have been going very well.

I hit Labrynthian at 26th level with no assistance and wiped the floor with it, and then I also found some maze or tomb of Shaldor or something, so that's where I'm heading next.

A stealh/archer build is super powerful once you get the skills high enough. I am playing that way currently, and I get a ridiculous thrill out of sniping everyone.
