Terror Between Space and Time - Adherents of Yog-Sothoth

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

One of the things I love most about Golarion is that there is a ton of stuff left unwritten. It allows me to expand on things in my games and invent new things to further enrich the game world. A part of the setting that always interests me are the divine being they have and how the interact with their followers and each other. On one of the Pathfinder FB pages I play a little game of creativity where I ask about what kind of character you would make to follow a god. This week I'm looking at Yog-Sothoth, the Outer God of gates, space, and time.

Sitting at our theoretical gaming table, our GM turns to us and says, "All of the characters must be followers of Yog-Sothoth, although they do not need to be divine casters." What character do you make? Who is he? Why has he chosen The Lurker at the Threshold as his patron? In what ways does he further the Outer God‘s goals? Why would he be attracted to this beings doctrine?

If I had to put it simply... it would be this character. XD

One of the things that's always bothered me about the Mythos in Pathfinder is the way it skews evil, and the general monsters associated with it are almost identical to demons. Yog-Sothoth was - wisely, in my opinion - created as a Chaotic Neutral entity, and Korina here exists with the idea of someone who's fiercely independent and feels that most people simply don't understand the Key and the Gate.

...

None of which is to imply that the eldritch deities are even remotely 'safe', of course. XD Rather, I made this character for the idea of "What happens when evil looks at madness and madness looks back".

This character began, conceptually, as a syncretic Desna/Yog-Sothoth worshiper. While that has since gone by the wayside, the idea of a free-spirited traveling soul who comes to regard Yog-Sothoth as a means to open doors and explore in freedom is what I'd roll with- maybe an Occultist (which Rose here is), maybe a Horizon Walker Ranger...

I think I'd approach Yog from the standpoint of Umr at-tawil. Beyond that though.. I don't know.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Depends on how much of The Dunwich Horror the campaign draws on, I guess.

Given more thought, here is what I'd run:

He would be one who seeks to influct understanding. A dabbler in vile magics and methods (in truth all of which being chaotic) he'd not only be on his own journey in a matter of speaking, but hope to guide others. To him, insanity would be revelation. Outsiders of the chaotic planes would be evidence. Chaos would be truth. Unfortunately, evidenced by the paths of the 'enlightened' not all are ready for such gifts.

I think a half-elf Elder Mythos Cultist. Though psychic spellcasters do fit theme nicely.

pretty much.

the ancestor of Charles Dexter Ward (can't remember his name) also needed help.

the PCs can be those guys. or they can be helping Wilbur Whately.

simple. gotta get the THING to do the EVENT.

it's not much different from any other adventure if you frame it in that way.

Nice some interesting stuff. I too like that Yog is Chaotic Neutral. Its just force of nature and not actually evil. Its job isn't pretty but it is its job. I'm also a fan of the gates aspect of his worship. I need to find a True Neutral deity of gates or doors and then have a cult that uses that deity, Yog (CN), and Alseta (LN) a the trinity of the doors.

Janus comes in handy.

Alseta is basically Golarion's Janus.
