like scrying, augury, or divination. but with out telling you "yea they are at the fangs of annihilation". more like helping "yea they went this way" sorta thing. any ideas what i am looking for?
Perhaps your looking for Locate Creature?
Discern location (8th level) is exceedingly powerful.
You could use a sending (5th level) to ask the person "Where are you?" and get a response.
Scrying (4th level) shows the person and about 10' around them, and maybe you could recognize where they are.
Commune (5th level, also available to many improved familiars) could be used to ask "Are they north/south/east/west of us?" (consider how to further partition your search, and combine with good Knowledge (geography) rolls.

I've always had Whispering Wind work for party members. Basically works like text messaging
