Hey all!
First time GM here, actually, first time tabletopper too (yes I threw myself straight into the fire)!
I am running Rise of the Runelords with 3 characters (1 Bard, 1 Fighter/sorceror, 1 Druid), and they are progressing quickly for the story, which isn't really a problem because I can tailor it to fit, award less xp, etc.

I am halfway through The Skinsaw Murders, the characters have just defeated Aldern. They need to go to Magnimar next but I want to spend extra time prepping that part so they can have adventures in the city. Basically, I am trying to up my GM game lol.
Long story short I have an idea for a sidequest but I need help setting it up. I introduced Belvin Valdemar (Heir to the family that owns the shipyard and the fish markets) as a red herring for the Skinsaw murders, so he is interested in my druid. I play him as a stately but clumsy man, who worries about his father's ailing health, managing the business all on his own, the Sczarni breathing down his neck.
The characters know nothing about the Sczarni or the Scarnettis yet, or any of that funny business, so I was hoping to use that to my advantage. They busted the "Dragon racing" and found out that a guy named Jubrayl is behind the scam, so they keep asking about how to go after that, so that would be a good road to go down too.
My basic idea is to go off something that has happened: Belvin has invited my druid to dinner when she is next free and in town. I want him to suddenly invite the other two as well, or have them come along as "Chaperones because we know how men think". I want something to happen at dinner (not Belvin's fault, he doesn't like working with criminals and wants nothing more than to make his businesses legit. He really is just a precious cinnamon roll.)
I'm not sure how to play it in an interesting way, or what fights I will have, floorplans, etc.
I need help with ideas, I really want my first sidequest to be a good one.
So....any ideas on how to work this right?
