Reach Weapons and Opportune Parry (and Riposte)

Rules Questions

Now that Bladed Brush exists, people are interested in making glaive wielding swashbucklers. One of the best things the swashbuckler has going for it is the opportune parry and riposte deed, which I'm not sure how it works exactly with the glaive.

Opportune Parry and Riposte:

Quote:
1st level, when an opponent makes a melee attack against the swashbuckler, she can spend 1 panache point and expend a use of an attack of opportunity to attempt to parry that attack. The swashbuckler makes an attack roll as if she were making an attack of opportunity; for each size category the attacking creature is larger than the swashbuckler, the swashbuckler takes a –2 penalty on this roll. If her result is greater than the attacking creature's result, the creature's attack automatically misses. The swashbuckler must declare the use of this ability after the creature's attack is announced, but before its attack roll is made. Upon performing a successful parry and if she has at least 1 panache point, the swashbuckler can as an immediate action make an attack against the creature whose attack she parried, provided that creature is within her reach.

Reach:

Quote:
You use a reach weapon to strike opponents 10 feet away, but you can't use it against an adjacent foe.

So if an adjacent enemy attacks a glaive-wielding swashbuckler, it appears that they will be able to parry that attack as usual, but will they be able to riposte? Is a 5' away creature "within the reach" of a glaive wielding character?

Bladed Brush lets you shorten your grip as a move action, but that doesn't help you in the case where you full attack someone 10' away, they 5' step to become adjacent and attack (which is exactly what many antagonists will do when someone they want to hurt is 10' away).

A glaive wielder can riposte at 5' as well as a rapier wielder can at 10', it is pretty clear that you need to be allowed to attack your opponent in order to attack them. A glaive cannot attack at 5', done.

Do you mean to say "parry" instead of "riposte"?

My reading is that a glaive wielder can parry any attack whether it comes from 5' or 10' or 30' away. They can only riposte (i.e. counterattack) if the opponent is 10' away unless they have shortened their grip prior to their turn ending.

I mean riposte, meaning of my examples works. I agree with your second post.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This is how it might work

You can parry a melee attack from any distance, since you are using your AoO roll against their attack roll.

If you succeed, you can then use an immediate action to make an attack if you have panache. You don't have to attack with the weapon you parried with. Spiked armor works fine. Getting all your bonuses on it might be another story.

Unarmed strike, gauntlets, and cestus (the latter of which DOESN'T require Improved Unarmed Struke to do safely) should all work for the attack as well (it is a free action to have one hand let go of your two-handed weapon).

Free actions are taken on your turn though, so you can't parry with the glaive, take a hand off, riposte with the gauntlet, and put the hand back since all of that is happening out of turn. Spiked armor or a Monk's unarmed strike are the only realistic options.
