Hello, Paizo boards! GM Tallgrass here. I'm new to the Paizo boards and excited to connect with the community here. I've spent most of my online gaming life over at RPOL, but I've found a distinct lack of Paizo-based games and a transient (i.e. non-posting) user-base for every game I've ever participated in or GM'ed. While I'm sure the board here has its share of non-posters, there is, at the least, an overabundance of Paizo gaming opportunities and players!

But enough about me. On to the gaming.

Recruitment Details
The game up for recruitment is Fire Mountain Game's phenomenal Way of the Wicked. I'm sure most players here are familiar with it, but just in case you're not, you can download the Player's Guide here.

I'm looking for 4 players - maybe 5. And, as I'm a little old-school, it's important to me that all roles are filled - Martial, Arcane, Skilled and Divine. So keep that in mind as you apply.

Application
To apply, please complete the (hopefully minimal) steps below.

0. Download and read the Player's Guide.
1. Develop a character concept using the criteria/questions below.
2. Share a brief writing example. This could be your character's backstory, an example from another game you're in or an excerpt from an old term paper (please don't). Just let me see an example of your style.
3. Share how often you can post/contribute to the game. I don't want to put unrealistic expectations on the group, but I'd like to shoot for one post per day on weekdays. If we go faster, I'm down with that.
4. Share how many other PBPs you're currently playing.

Character Concept:

I don't really want people to spend time building a full character (unless you want to!), so I'm just asking for a general concept. I've posted the character creation guidelines just so you know what you're signing up for, but don't feel pressured to go through all the rigamarole of creating a complete character until you're selected.

As for your background, put as much or as little effort into fleshing that out as you want. I prefer characters with deep backgrounds, but also understand the effort associated with building something creative/interesting. If you have one you'd like to share, great! If not, no worries.

1. Pick a Class. All Paizo-created classes are acceptable, excluding Paladins. Anti-Paladins and Barbarians can choose LE or NE as their alignment.
2. What crime did you commit to land you in prison?
3. What will your character contribute to the party in and out of battle?
4. Mechanically where do you foresee your character going in the future? If you don't have a plan, that's ok, too!
5. (Optional) What is your character's backstory?

Character Creation Guidelines:

As stated above, this is just for information at this point. You aren't required to build the crunch of your character at this point.

1. All characters begin at level one.
2. We will be using the Focus/Foible ability method.
3. Alignment must be LE or NE.
4. Core races only. Unless you have a really interesting concept using a Featured race from the ARG. Uncommon and Custom races won't be accepted. Sorry.
5. All Paizo-created classes are acceptable, excluding the Paladin.
6. +2 Skill Points per level
7. Two traits. One MUST be your crime.
8. You begin with no gold or equipment.
9. Max HP at level one, roll or 1/2 HD + 1 thereafter.

Recruitment will run until next Friday, March 29 or until we have enough applicants to flesh out the party.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to the applications!

Dot :)

Bili the Shiv - Halfling Rogue
Focus: Dex, Foible: Cha
Crime: Multiple murders

What I can do for the party, and for myself:
Bili will be the skillmonkey in the party, definitely focused on perception, trapfinding, and the like. In combat, she will be utilizing a bow - especially now that pathfinder has made ranged fighters so capable.

the future?:
Bili forsees herself sitting atop a throne made of the skulls of her enemies. In a more mechanical sense, she'll be tentatively going into the assassin PrC. Should you allow the optional 'move into becoming a vampire with 5 feats' from the adventure path, then she'd be very interested in that, as well.

background:
Bili had a lot of trouble growing up. No matter how she tried, she just could not connect with the other children. She always seemed to say the wrong thing, at the wrong time... in the wrong situation. As she grew, the abuse grew from merely physical to mental and social abuse. Objectively it may not have been that bad, but at the same time Bili's mental illness began to show itself - an almost pathological sense of paranoia.

She plotted for months before committing her first murder... another teenager who had been particularly vile to her. The rush she felt as she watched the blood spurt from the slashed throat was the closest to pleasure she had ever felt. It became a need for her, so much so that her periods of planning became shorter and shorter, until finally she was cornered by the Guard. As she was dragged to prison, she cried out that her revenge would cause the streets to run red!

If Drogan doesn not get selected for another WotW game I would like to submit him for this. His stats were done here

character and background and everything is done. He is a Tiefling so he may not be considered for your game then if you are sticking to core only. thanks

Sczarni

Interesting...

Perhaps a necromancer...

Will supply further detail once I can read through the player's guide

I will be forward and admit that I was in another Way of the Wicked game that fell apart not long after starting. (I can link you or tell you at exactly what point if you wish.) If that doesn't bother you too much, then I would like to put forth this antipaladin for your consideration. He did not get to see much action in the last game.

His backstory could probably use a facelift, and his ability scores will probably have to be rerolled but I would be interested in playing him again.

Dot.

I think I'll hold off on submiting Thomas Glint for this one. I'll try to think of someone else evil to play.

Sczarni

So I'm torn between a charming sorcerer type and a blaster-Oracle.

Hmm...decisions, decisions...

Artorius is a lawful evil dwarven melee and shield ranger, he will remain a ranger, no current plans to multi-class. His Focus is str and his foible is cha, he killed a man in a duel to regain is family’s honour. Not currently in any PBP and can probably do 1-2 posts a day.

Artorius brings a selection of skills aimed at tracking and identifying enemies, can support a stealth based character and can hold his own on the front line. With GM permission he will also have craft (alchemy) and bring things such as acid or alchemist fire to the fight.

I had finally found my target, but how to get to him? Those buildings are closer together than I am used to and there are a lot of guards. This man had ruined my father and forced him into the wilds hunted for debts that were not his. But now I, Artorius, am here to avenge that injustice and return honour to my family. Wait, the man is leaving the house, still to many guards. Perhaps the crossbow, no that is not personal enough. A duel? Such a powerful man could not be seen to back down from a challenge, even if it is currently out of fashion. Poisons and alchemies could not be used against this one, but should be ready anyway in case his guards cause problems. Well time to ready my axe and shield, a man is going to die this day.

Good luck with your game! I've definitely had more luck with play-by-post games on this site than on other sites, although the flake-out rate is still pretty high. :-)

Submitting Myra the Darksting, sorceress of dark powers and desicrator of Mitran temples!

She was created for another Way of Wicked, and if not selected I'd like to apply for this one. I can adjust her stats as needed if she is selected.

Welcome to the boards and I'll be submitting a character soon. Sadly I'm unable to download the players guide while at work... I mean at the place I currently am... at. But for sure I can d/l it tonight and get something on this thread post-haste!

I'm thinking Witch for this one. Focus Intelligence, Foible Constitution.

Rolling rest, in order:
Str: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Wis: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Cha: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
focus charisma, foible Strength

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Focus: Cha
Foible: Str

What shocking rolls!! Aw, well.

DM: I created Libby some time ago for a game that didn't get going. Along with your campaign, I've also applied to another game. I'm going to leave the mechanics as they are for now and, should you choose me, I'll make the necessary changes.

Her concept and background, etc. is already in place and should be enough to base your decision on.

If not selected in another way of the wicked I would like to submit Cyx here.

everything should be in the profile.

Sczarni

I'm feeling a burned dark tapestry oracle.

A forger and con man, sent to Branderscar after his "letters of credit" and smarmy ways finally caught up to him.

Focus: Charisma
Foible: Strength

Str: 8
Dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Con:1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Int: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Wis: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Cha: 18 (+2)

Sczarni

crunch for Oracle Robert Findlay

Currently playing in 8 pbp games.

Feel free to read through, several are significantly prolific, others not so much.

Str 8
Dex 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Con 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Int 18
Wis 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Cha 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Kinda the same as many, submitted to another game. Here's my rolls, background is in the profile. I'll adjust the charcter's stats if selected (and not selected for the previous game).

The Steps:

0. On this, I would also like to mention that I own and am running two games of this on here and am very familiar with the AP. If this cuts me out of the running, I'm fine with that, just let me know :)
1. Please see profile for details, but my character is an elven enchanter (manipulator). Or should I say, the step daughter of a slaver who at one point attempted to take down Talingarde long ago. After his capture and death, she now attempts to do the same, but was caught early on since at this time her skills were nothing compared to his.
2. I have many examples from my campaigns.
3. Normally 1/day. I've recently had difficulties with this due to a heavy travel job and utilization of hotel internet (which I find incredibly terrible). As of 4/14/2013 though I will be in a new position without the travel and will be reliable (honestly from 4/1/2013 on, but I will be moving the 10th-11th).
4. I GM 2, play 11 (1 is on hiatus)

The Concept:

1. Enchanter (Manipulator)
2. Slave Taking
3. Out of battle I will have access to a variety of social skills, as well as spells to help with this. In battle I will focus what I can on crowd control effects (though mostly the save or suck variety). I hope to complement my rather weak offensive selection with magical enhancements (wands and stuff)
4. I plan to focus heavily on enchantment spells, with a backup in illusions. Straight wizard. I may pick up 1 or 2 item creation feats if allowed.
5. Under profile.

There doesn't seem to be too much in the way of front-liners posted so I'll go with a fighter. Do you (DM) want me to use the rolls above and I'll change the focus/foible stats, or would you prefer me to reroll?

I'll post the new concept under a new name.

This is Fallen_Mage's submission.

Cyx:
In case you didn't know, this is Thomas.

Shadow Lodge

Pathfinder Maps, Pathfinder Accessories Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Starfinder Superscriber

So here is a concept I've been playing around with that I think could work pretty well.

1) 1) A (Fell) Gnomish Blight Druid with the Night Subdomain (NE)
2) Desecrated a Mitran Shrine that did *not* belong in the forest
3) Battlefield Control, both magical and nonmagical. Some Healing. Combat capable when wild-shaped.
4) I honestly don't know -- I usually focus on shoring up party weaknesses.
5) She has been watching the Mitrans become more and more arrogant through the years, and expanding their influence to where they aren't wanted. Now she is ready to unleash the darker side of nature on them.

2)This writing sample is from a sadly defunct PbP Skull & Shackles game where I played a Half-Orc Priestess of Naderi (Goddess of Suicide & Doomed Love). One of the other players had just confessed to me that though she had been successfully disguised as a male human for the entire campaign to that point, she was actually a female half-orc.

3)One post a day is always doable. One week a month, that's all I can do. The rest of the time I can manage up to three posts a day.

4)I am currently in two other PbP games. (Curse of the Crimson Throne & PFS In Service of Lore)

I am thinking about a half orc fighter who specializes in sundering and smashing things. Should be done by the weekend.

The Exchange

@pH unbalanced, I have been writing up a Blight Druid (gnomish too) I would love to see it wreak havoc. You beat me to it. I'll submit a different PC. Good luck.
@True Repentance, nice avatar.

1. Cavalier, Order of Dragon (Honor Guard)
Str1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Dx18
Con1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
In1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
W8
Ch1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
2. I'll post it shortly.
3. One to two posts /day.
4. Skulls&Shackles, Sandboxy PBP.

Edit Eh I was hoping for a bit more strength, guess finesse will rule the day.

@ReckNBall, yours is pretty awesome aswell.

@ GM just making sure, are we allowed to move around stat rolls or must they be rolled in order?

some stat rolls:

Strength = 18
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Int = 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Dang wish cha was higher

Since you mention "maybe 5" im gonna go ahead and bank on being that fifth member, and failing that, possibly the martial one. Ive long fiddled with the idea of an Arcane Duelist Bard. Originally I just had him pegged as the general good guy, but with the prospect of an evil campaign, I decided he would be somewhat like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, a pompous, self serving narcissist who believes the world revolves around him. While he is cunning, he is not one for thinking too far ahead and is prone to making decision that may seem right in the now, but have ramifications later on.

With all that, being Gaston ill be going for a Strength Focus and a Wisdom Foible.

Strength: 18

Dexterity: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Intelligence: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Wisdom: 8

Charisma: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Crime will be Duel onto Death. While he isnt Lawful, when someone insults him he often challanges the offender to a duel. That worked for a while untill someone blabbed. As a true self serving arse, he is Neutral Evil.

He will be a light melee bruiser. Being the person he is he will focus most of his spells on offense and buffs for himself, only using it to assist his allies when the situation absolutely demands it, or he might as well (like casting Haste on himself and giving it to his allies just because hes got more targets allowed anyway)

Outside battle he has a way with people despite his arrogant, often rather obnoxious personality. His good looks and a strangely innate way with words, makes him a talented sweet talker.

He doesnt have any grand plans for the future, simply taking any chance he sees to make life cosy for himself.

As for a name, the more ive likened his personality to Gastons, the more im tempted to simply taking that name, but ill have to think on it.

Im currently playing in two PbPs, one regularly, one is currently on hold due to DM health. Im also in a third, but its only just started, so im hessitant to include it.

Ill include a snippet from the on hold one, since its currently in a solo stage, getting the party together. Much more room to strut my stuff when I only have to concern myself with my personal story

Some writing:
It sees her lying on the ground, broken and unmoving. Its eyes flicker and glisten, move from her to the Thing and back again and again. Chest heaving, heart racing, despair and loss turn to hate and anger as Its rage flares with renewed intensity. Climbing atop the lumpen, defeated mass, It straddles the Thing. Errant weapon thrusts of the Guard find Its skin but it does not notice or care. Raising one fist high above Its head It lets it fall with the weight of muscle, gravity and sorrow. The other fist soon follows as the first rises again. Faster and faster they rise and fall, rise and fall endlessly. Slowly, steadily Its face, torso, the entire front of It is covered in streaks of crimson. Wispy and faint at first, like paint flung from the head of a brush, but soon turning into narrow streaks, forced into the air by by impact and pulse. Around It, men stop and rest their weapons, satisfied with the result of their work, but It does not stop. It is not untill It unbalances itself as it punches, slipping and sliding off the Thing in a shower of gore, that rage leaves it. Roars turn to anguished howls and whimpered crying as it goes limp on its back, arms spread wide, eyes blinded by sweat, blood and tears.

I'll propose a character that I've got proposed in another WotW game. Almost got in one previously, but posted him on the last day and the choices had already been made.

Strength: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Dexterity: Focus - 18 + 2 = 20
Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Intelligence: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 + 2 = 19
Wisdom: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Charisma: Foible - 8 - 2 = 6

1. Pick a Class. All Paizo-created classes are acceptable, excluding Paladins. Anti-Paladins and Barbarians can choose LE or NE as their alignment. Ranger
2. What crime did you commit to land you in prison? High Treason, although there's a slew of other crimes that Arash could be convicted of.
3. What will your character contribute to the party in and out of battle? He's ranged support in combat, focusing on bow use and, later on, some spellcasting. Out of combat, he's a stealthy character, with a focus on misdirection and escaping. He'll provide guidance in the wilds as well, although the lower wisdom I rolled hampers that a bit.
4. Mechanically where do you foresee your character going in the future? If you don't have a plan, that's ok, too! Arash will take a level of wizard later on down the road and eventually head into Arcane Archer.
5. (Optional) What is your character's backstory? Shown below. :)

Ten Minute Background:

Six Important Things about the Character
1. Arash was raised in secret by one of the bishops of Mitra’s clergy, Bishop Buram Landrhew. Bishop Buram had him raised as a secret “inquisitor”, whose goal was to strike at evil in the very heart of the country without raising suspicion. Arash’s seclusion allowed Buram to tightly control Arash’s development as a person and to easily manipulate Arash’s worldview.
2. The tales of Arash’s parentage are that he was born to a devil-worshipping mother and a cambion father who had aided the hidden cell of Asmodean worshippers. He was taken by the Bishop when he was but a child and secreted away from the inquisitors so that he might have a chance at redemption.
3. Arash was trained by Moran, an archer with an unorthodox approach, but one that worked well. As Arash was trained in the bow, Moran also provided lessons in stealth, traps, and more esoteric ways of killing and manipulating others. He took to the lessons well, but the more spiritual pieces have evaded him for the time being.
4. After being confined for so long, Arash longed for the outdoors. He kept to himself outside, but occasionally had close calls with others. On a few instances, he was spotted by hunters, trappers, and others that travelled in the wilds. He ambushed them, determined to keep his existence a secret and praying that Mitra would forgive this as all other things would eventually be.
5. Arash wanted to know more about his past, so that he could hunt down his father, who had supposedly escaped. He investigated it from time to time, but during the reports he read over for another mission, he came across something overlooked in the archives. One of the inquisitors had looked into a report of a mother who had given birth to a fiendish child, but the child had disappeared before the inquisitor could arrive. This occurred in the town that Bishop Buram, then just a Father, served and the vague reports of the baby seemed similar to that of Arash. He was intrigued, but thought nothing of it until recently.
6. He truly believed that what he was doing was striking down opponents of the faith, but in reality it was those that prevented Bishop Buram’s rise in the ranks of the clergy. Even when pursuing the king, he had been convinced that the king was corrupted, much like Markadian III had been.
7. This came crashing down around him when he was taken. He’s spent the time since going over the events of his life again and again. Everything has been a lie. The salvation he sought has been ripped from his grasp, his own actions taking it further from him. In this state, he’ll probably lash out at things that remind him of what was done to him, but eventually he’ll stabilize and channel that hatred and rage into a new goal.

Four Goals:
1. Short Term: Arash wants to see Bishop Buram, Moran, and the others in Buram’s employ die slowly for what they did to him
2. Long Term: Arash will want to find a new purpose, particularly salvation through something. That salvation doesn’t need to be a removal of his “sins” but rather a justification of his life and actions. It is likely that the Church of Asmodeus will provide that for him, but another faith, such as Norgorber or even a cause may lend him that.
3. Long Term: Find out the truth surrounding his mother and father. The seed of doubt was sown long ago, but now it has taken root and he wishes to find out more about his parentage.
4. Long Term: Arash wants a last name. He long ago thought about using Bishop Buram’s, but that was too dangerous. Now, it is a reviled thing to him. He wants a last name that shows his purpose and carries meaning. It is important that he earn it rather than simply decide on one.

Two Secrets, One Known and One Unknown:
1. Arash deeply believed in the power of Mitra and salvation brought by faith in him. He followed the twisted doctrine that Bishop Buram taught him. This now shames him that he believed in such a lie.
2. Although his father was indeed a cambion, his mother was far from a devil-worshipper. She was a faithful Mitran and young woman, Lucasta Torvine, who was seduced by a passing dark stranger, the cambion Theribus Vordeth. Theribus had been working as a mercenary at the time in Talingarde, using magic to keep his identity secret.

Five People that are tied to Arash, Three Friends and Two Enemies:
1. Rana Edelvin: A young human girl that worked in the church that Arash was kept at. She was Arash’s handler and surrogate mother. He wants to hate her for everything, but can’t bring himself to. Little known to him and to Bishop Buram, she is a follower of Asmodeus who has been whispering in the bishop’s ear and provoking him to further atrocities.
2. Tunivel Sorish: Tunivel is a scoundrel and information broker that has helped Arash in the past in accomplishing the missions that were given to him. He seems to be only interested in coin, but seems to have taken a liking to the naïve tiefling.
3. Theribus Vordeth: A cambion who fathered Arash and then left. Whether or not he knows about Arash, he seems to have little interest in the tiefling he created.
4. Cardinal Buram Landrhew: The bishop that raised Arash, used him as a tool to rise in power, and then discarded him when it was convenient. His activities were close to being discovered, but in a twist of fate and a cunning maneuver, Bishop Buram managed to elevate himself and implicate a few of his opponents by sacrificing a pawn and forging some documents.
5. Moran: The harsh instructor of Arash. The tiefling has little love for the man, but seeks to apply his lessons as best he can. Arash suspects he had a hand to play in all of it beyond molding the tiefling as a tool, but Arash is not sure how much of one.

Five Mannerisms:
1. Arash is extremely uncomfortable being away from his weapon. It holds significance to him, including a feeling of safety and power, but also, he feels incomplete when he is separated from his bow. The weapon he wielded previously reminds him too much of the shattered delusions he believed in before, so he will seek to find a new one.
2. Arash stares at people in a manner that leaves them feeling a bit uncomfortable. If asked, most people say that it reminds them of being watched by a predator.
3. He hates the indoors and will often seek to be outside rather than stay inside. Nature appeals to him and outside lets him feel free. These feelings will deepen after he escapes.
4. Arash has had to lie numerous times about unusual things about him, even though he tries to avoid social encounters with others. This has led him to embracing the well-known silver-tongue of tieflings. He does this mostly to avoid problems and to try and compensate for his utter lack of socialization otherwise.
5. Arash has a keen mind that lends itself well to reading. His stunted upbringing combined with his training as an assassin have given him a great deal of book knowledge on esoteric topics, but relatively little practical know-how.

Writing Sample/Background:

"The bow and you are one. Think not of it as a tool, but as an extension of yourself." Moran examined Arash’s form, nodding slightly and mumbling to himself all while adjusting Arash’s posture with slight pushes and slaps.

"What does that mean, teacher? I don’t understand it." Arash asked, careful to keep his eyes straight, focused on the target. Avoiding a beating was almost as important as learning the lessons taught. His volatile teacher ensured that he learned quickly or earned a new scar to remind the boy.

"You will, Arash, or you will suffer, but this is a lesson best grasped over time." He looked once more at the boy, giving a final examination. “Perfect form… Now release. Let the arrow take flight and follow it. Never let it leave your sight.”

The arrow flew straight, striking the target perfectly, nearly a hundred feet from where student and teacher stood. He followed the arrow the entire time in its flight, letting his arms sink as the arrow flew. Yes, Arash thought, that’s sure to please. He turned to look at his master, but found Moran staring at the target, a frown on his face.

Moran lashed out at Arash, striking the boy in the face. "When did I say let your weapon fall?! Always be ready for the next shot! Learning new lessons is no excuse to forget the old!" Moran sighed and shook his head, "You may never be ready to receive the grace of Mitra, Arash, so foolish are you. Your heritage will never be forgiven." Moran smirked slightly, just out of sight of his young pupil.

Arash righted himself and with grim determination he nocked another arrow. I am a faithful believer. I will one day be worthy. Focus. Concentrate. Follow the arrow. Remember your lessons. I will be ready. I will serve. My place in the light will be secured.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------

The king sat in this throne surrounded by shining kinghts. The palace itself was a testament to the glory of Mitra, and the opulence of the aristocracy. Arash kept his eyes low, not out of shame, but a distaste for the décor around him. It reminded him so of his tainted heritage. His tail lashed back and forth wildly, his frustration evident. How was I caught? Arash asked himself. I followed the plan outlined by Moran. The king stood up from his throne and stepped forward a couple of steps.

"Did you think you could take my family and I here in the palace, devil spawn?" Markadian shook his head. "Fortunately, I was forewarned about your plan."

Forewarned? Arash raised his head to meet the boots of the king. Who? Moran, Tunivel, Rana, and maybe a few others knew the plan, but... He kept his eyes low as he swept his gaze about the room. "Looking for your co-conspirators? They’re being rounded up as we speak." Arash lowered his eyes to the floor again, confused and searching for possibilities. It was all he had now. He had failed and the tainted king had him. He would never see Mitra’s glory.

Markadian’s boots appeared in front of him. "Lift him up. I wish to look him in the eye as I tell him his fate." Arash felt the cold, sharp metal of the knights’ gauntlets as they roughly lifted him to his feet. I will at least deny him this. He kept his gaze at the king’s feet. "Lift his head! Make him look at me!" More metal, enclosing grasping fingers, was on his head and his face now. They forced him to look the king in the face.

"There, spawn of evil. You now know the face of the man who orders your execution. You will die for your sins, for they are many. Extortion, kidnapping, and murder, but the most recent is high treason. You will die for all of these, and I wish that you had multiple lives so that I could take them all, but for the charge of high treason you will be drawn and quartered. May the pain give you clarity of the magnitude of your damnation as you die." The king gestured to the guards, looking away from Arash. "Take him away. I wish him to taint this room no longer."

The only clarity that I need is th- The thought died in his head as the guards spun him about and he saw Bishop Buram. Why is father here? The guards pulled him on, taking the bishop and the king out of his sight. The king spoke as Arash was being dragged from the chamber. "Bishop Buram Landrhew, I thank you for your aid in this matter. It was fortunate that your men discovered this plot in time."

The world became muted for Arash. Assistance? But father was the one that I aided. I... He... We... destroyed evil. He set me on the road to redemption... right? I...

The bishop’s words broke through his malign reverie, "Of course, my king. I am only too glad to serve. It was through the guidance of Mitra that I and my men were able to discover that foul creature’s plans before they could come any closer to fruition. His punishment is just."

Pain flooded Arash’s world, drowning out everything else. The palace was filled his screams, unholy rage given voice for moments before the knights dragging him gagged the tiefling. He raged and sobbed as he was thrown in the wagon. Death. Death to them all. It was all he had left.

I can post once a day typically, although occasionally more. I'm usually at work during the afternoon/evening and up late into the night. I'm playing in a modified Reign of Winter game currently and running two Skull & Shackles games that I picked up from others and a Shattered Star game that I started. I also run a Roll20 Jade Regent game on Tuesday evenings. All times are EST.

Dark Archive

This sounds like a blast. I'd love to run through this and then in turn, purchase the books to take my group through after I've witnessed all the carnage the group will create rather than face.

If accepted, I've created an aasimar rogue outcast. I'll expand his background as I flesh him out. If the aasimar aspect of the character is too far out there, I could always make a very distant ancestry (his celestial heritage a story aspect and so diluted it has no statistical reference), and shown only in his appearance, making him a human character.

Quick Background
--------------------
He is Stavrosian who will become known as Stavros Scarbeard, Scion of Depravity.

Outcast by his own unforgiving parents for the temptations of his youth and his wicked tongue, he became a brash and foolhardy brigand, skulking and thieving in petty larcenies around the kingdom. His own angelic appearance masks a growing storm of sardonic black rage, but his disregard for Mitra law and growing list of crimes is leading him quickly to swift and merciless justice.

In an effort to focus his rage, he has sought out the Enemy of legend, visiting places unspoken and unwelcome, finding relics and stories, stealing from libraries and monasteries until one day he finally managed to contact a servant of Asmodeus. This Fallen, a creature of such terrible beauty similar to his own has shown him a world beyond the laws of the Shining Lord. But it was just a glimpse. As soon as he had found something beyond the gleaming walls of Talingarde, Sir Balin of Karfeld and a host of Talireans descended to take the Fallen and destroy it and all Stavros could become.
The Fallen, sensing its own doom, hid Stavros and spoke only one word, 'Witness.' He watched in horror as the creature was destroyed without a word from the Talireans with holy fire and weaponry.

Outrage built in Stavros until one day he brazenly walked into the House of Darius, and using his celestial heritage as a ruse to get close to the monarch of Talingarde, failed in an attempt to end the reign of King Markadian V.

For such an act of betrayal against his king, his god, and even his own flesh; he is to be burned and quartered. The first of such judgments.
--------------------

In battle, Stavros will start out as your rogue type; flanking and stabbing while adding colorful commentary, perhaps even acting as a decoy to bring opponents into a waiting ambush of spells and steel.

Out of battle, Stavros will use his wits to undermine the enemy, steal their resources, turn their allies into enemies and cause such havoc the nation of Talingarde will crumble by its own hand. Unless of course, I roll a 1. Then he'll make a nice decorative head on a spike.

As for the future of Stavros. I plan to keep taking rogue levels until story-wise, he finds a breaking point and begins to take barbarian levels with the urban barbarian archetype (UC 31). It's controlled rage ability fits well with Stavros' ever growing hostility towards the servants of Mitra.

Interested very much so. Right now am thinking of an ex-fighter tactician. Convicted of desertion. Was put on the watch wall for a month straight and wanted to get into the action. He intercepted a message about an incoming attack, and instead of alerting his commander, he let the attack commence. Talingarde military did win, but heavy casualties were suffered and my character was put in jail and charged with his crime since he aided the enemy attack.

@Everyone: Wow - a great number and quality of submissions already. Thank you!

A quick note: You don't have to roll abilities yet. If you have already and you like your rolls, that's fine. Once you're selected you may roll again if you received less-than-desired results the first time.

I think that answers the most common question I've received, but let me know if I've missed something else you asked.

Current List of Applicants
Note: I've only included those who've applied with a concept - not just dotted. f you don't like the category I have you in, or if I missed you, let me know.

Dot. I'll come back with a concept soon.

The problem with not rolling now is that, when you do roll, and because they're fixed, your stats may prohibit that concept. For example, I want to create "TEH GR8IST SOARDSMAN IN ALL TEH LANDZ"...he's not going to be "GR8" if his physical stats are 8 and 9.

:)

0. Download and read the Player's Guide. DONE
1. Develop a character concept using the criteria/questions below. DONE
2. Share a brief writing example. DONE (hope backstory will suffice here)
3. Share how often you can post/contribute to the game. Once a day minimum for sure, even on weekends.
4. Share how many other PBPs you're currently playing. 4 well paced and 2 slower games, can easily fit in another and have been only applying for way of the wicked games recently :P

1. Pick a Class. Fighter with the Two-Handed archetype.
2. What crime did you commit to land you in prison? Attempted Murder.
3. What will your character contribute to the party in and out of battle? In battle he will be at the front, getting in the face of enemies. Out of battle he will aid with intimidating and breaking things.
4. Mechanically where do you foresee your character going in the future? Most likely going the full 20 fighter levels, I have never played a fighter or a half-orc before so hoping to be picked and have a ball. If there would be a way for him to attain Graveknight status that would be cool.(there are options for vampire and lich so i'm putting forward another suggesting, no complaints if i can't though.
5. (Optional) What is your character's backstory? Below :)

Ten minute Intro:

Six Important Things about the Character
1. Vladst' father is leader of an orc tribe in the north past the wall, he has met him once and been humiliated in battle. They have no love for each other.
2. Vladst' mother could not give him up and instead raised him, trying to bring out all the human qualities inside and supress the orc ones.
3. Vladst never payed attention in school, prefering to go out and play with the boys with their practise swords. He gave out the most broken bones of all of them combined.
4. Vladst wanted to be in battles and signed up as soon as he could. The battlefield is his home. Enemies his lovers.
5. Vladst wanted to transfer to an area which had seen more action recently but was refused. He tried to intimidate the officers into letting him go but that failed also. This caused his anger to take over.
6. Vladst does not feel he fits in anywhere.

Four Goals:
1. Short Term: Vladst wishes to avoid the headsmans axe.
2. Long Term: Vladst wishes to find his father, perhaps be accepted as a warrior or even kill him to show his superiority.
3. Long Term: Vladst wishes to always find a battlefield to participate on, whatever the reason. If he could start a war he would. He would that he was master of battle. Unable to be defeated.
4. Long Term: If he could find a way to never die this would indeed be considered, even undeath(Graveknight).

Two Secrets, One Known and One Unknown:
1. His mother was secretly a worshipper of Asmodeus, teaching him things in secret that will, in future be remembered and could influence his faith. He would try to keep his mother alive, as the only being that ever truly cared for him.
2. His mother is a distant relative to Sir Balin.

Five People that are tied to Vladst, Three Friends and Two Enemies:
1. Irena Grey: Mother(friend)
2. Sir Balin: Distant relative(enemy)
3. Kizz'Kar Blorakik: Orc Father, Chieftain of his tribe(enemy)
4.
5.

Five Mannerisms:
1. Vladst will just as soon break something as try to figure a way around it, but usually listens to council if it is there.
2. Vladst Will give others a chance to beg(intimidate) before he goes about smashing in their face.
3. Vladst prefers large two handed weapons.
4. Vladst has never known a woman, strangely enough, and even stranger, does not like killing them.
5. Vladst is a talkative and social person, this is not seen often because most often get on his bad side or do not want to talk to a half-orc.

The following is all in this Alias.

Personality/Appearance:

Vladst' grey-green skin is readily apparent. Sharper teeth than human and pointed ears make his heritage easily perceived. He does not slump in his reduced state but stands tall. No matter what happens to him his is determined to accept himself even if no others will. Rejected by humans and orcs alike he will make them accept him. Strength is the only thing that impresses him but he is wise enough, thanks to his mother that he knows strength is not the only thing that will get things done. Unfortunately his undeveloped mind fails him in this area. He struggles to keep his temper and is prone to smash things that get in his way, but his military training has indeed left it's mark and he is disciplined enough to show restraint(even if others must help him remember). He wishes to show everyone that they were mistaken about him and make them all pay for that mistake.

Backstory:

Vladst, so named for the man his father had slain, his mother's husband, never let the other kids make fun of him for his inhuman looks. They didn't make that mistake often. He was the strongest of the children in his area and took advantage of this. His mother was teaching him to control himself, but he was young and the orc in him often got him in trouble. She had not gone back to the farm which was destroyed with the orc raid that had brought forth Vladst, instead finding a place in town. People thought she was crazy for keeping him. She worked her trade as a seamstress, employed by a childhood friend who was now a tailor. Vladst attended school but only passed by the barest margin, uncaring of his studies, he preferred to practice at sword fighting with the other boys of his gang. Due to his mother's help controlling his orc nature and his failure in school to become anything special, he joined the military. The war against the asmodeans was going well and he, though late to the true fight, hoped to still catch some action. Training went quickly. He was a natural with weapons. He attributed this to his warlike ancestry.

His first battle however, would be his last. In the thick of the fighting against the enemy, he had killed at least a dozen men by himself. His force was ordered to pull back and surround the flank. As they marched they were ambushed by an orc horde. Surprised and now outnumbered they were forced to retreat. Vladst was confronted by the orc chief who, seeing his joy in battle instantly recognised the features of this half-orc as one of his own. Strange that one of those unfortunate human women would raise him as their own. Vladst had brought down a much larger opponent to help another escape. So unlike an orc. The chief would teach him a lesson. Cutting his way towards Vladst with his massive axe he called out to his son. When Vladst realised who this was he didn't know what to do and was too intimidated to move. He saw the fierceness of his father's fighting to get to him. Men were cleaved in two, it was the greatest display of skill he had ever seen. The chieftain challenged and shortly defeated him but left him alive. Mocking his half breed status, telling him he would never meet his true potential with the humans.

Vladst retreated, bloody and beaten, but the image of his father continued to haunt him the following weeks. He wad awarded for bravery in helping the unit retreat in overwhelming odds. The promotion didn't make him as happy as he thought. He was finally accepted by most of the men now. But the thought of his father humiliating him like he did ate away at him. He did not fit in anywhere it seemed. He got in a fight with a high ranking superior over wanting to be transfered and everything that had been building up inside him spilled out, leading him to try to kill the man in his anger. It was all the others needed to confirm what they had always known about the half-orc, he could never be one of them. He was instantly arrested before he could do any harm and was immediately sent to branderscar prison to await his sentence. He deserved the axe. What had his mother constantly told him? Live by the sword, die by the sword.

What Faldus contribued in and out of battle:
He will focus a lot on cha based skills such as bluff and indimidate.

His future:
He visions himself laughing as he watches the blinded fools tortured by his hand. I want him geared towards a extremly intimidating and unpredictable character.

background:
Faldus grew as an orphan in the Church of Mitra. The monks and preist were told of a prophency that one day the the very foundation of the church would tremble when the one with eyes of ice grew to adulthood. The clergy ignored it because Faldus showed at an early age his faith. But Faldus was reading forbidden books stolen from the archives and soon he saw Mitra as his enemy. Then he began to see the true powers and they spoke to him, they intrugied him. During a normal worshipping peroid, he grabbed a torch and set the tapstry of Mitra alight and shouted "Death to the fools of righteousness!!".

Hey everyone, in the interest of getting started, I'm going to go ahead and close recruitment. If you've expressed interest but not posted a concept, you have a couple more hours to finish that up.

I'll be announcing my picks later this evening.

Thanks, everyone and apologies to those who are unable to meet this abbreviated timeline.

Damn, 20 mins too slow...

As I was accepted into another game, I will be withdrawing my application from this one. Hope the rest of you have a great game!

The Exchange

May I officially present Hikka Pane? Courtesian, Escort, Cavalier Bodyguard and itinerant slave-taker. She believes that an ounce of prevention is worth about several pounds of profit. Feel free to cause a bit of trouble for her, you'll find yourself in shackles destined for a bit of humility. She prefers to troll the darker side of society, upper or lower makes no difference. The troublemakers aren't missed (or rather not in time), selling them off lines her pockets and no bodies to dispose of.

Talingarde's darkside was more hidden than most, having been pushed to conform to Mitra's expectations. Hikka, posing as fresh innocent face with no funds "fell" into the wrong hands easily enough. She harvested several citizens with an otherwise wholesome public personality. The merchandise was stowed at a discreet nobleman's estate for pickup later. Alas, Mitra's inquisitors investigating the disappearances came across her and the latest acquisition. Under intense questioning, the other victims were found and released. She herself was taken into custody, delivered to Brandascar, where she critiques the shackles that now bind her.

This was the cavalier I proposed earlier. Still cleaning up the background a bit. Haven't settled on any one draft, but the crunch is complete.
Hikka Pane

Background:

Her heart was pounding so fast she thought it would burst. She sad in silence with her back to the door inside their hidden church hoping the dreaded hunters of Mitra wouldn’t find her. Her heart almost stopped as she heard the growl outside the door. The sound of claws scratching at the wood didn’t calm her down either.

“Donn heel” the young man leading the party commanded. The dog happily returned to it’s master’s side. “She is in that house” he said and pointed to the small house between a carpenter and a pottery, the sign proclaimed it to be a moneylender.

“Good boy, we’ll take it from here. Mitra is satisfied with your service.” An elderly cleric from the church of Mitra said. As the tracker turned his back to leave the cleric changed his mind: “Hold on boy, I’m not risking my men, send in the dog first.” Anger flared in his eyes as he venomously responded: “With all due respect Father, no. He’s my dog not yours or the church’s.” The priest’s infuriated response came immediately: “You’ll do as your told boy. Your master told me all about you huntsman. A squire who couldn’t even make it to knighthood, a failure.” Grudgingly the hound master followed the order.

The stench of sulphur hung heavily in the room, on the floor lay the corpses of the heretic girl and the faithful brown hound. The master was kneeling besides the creature, grief painted on his face. “Smile young man it is with Mitra now,” the cleric remarked mockingly. Grief and sorrow was replaced with anger, with a growl the young man charged, dagger drawn. He was stopped short by a soldier of the church, but still managed to lacerate the right arm of Mitra’s chosen. Fear and anger melted together in the cleric voice as he yelled: “You’ll go to Brandscar for this.

In combat a melee rock for the waves of Talingarde’s finest to break upon support by fang or beak. Outside of combat managing the hard logistics of flight that being food, shelter or mounts with a healthy scepticism towards his new found religion.

Mechanically where do you foresee your character going in the future?

Dark Ned, his face haggard and bruised from the multiple beatings he'd received before being put into the iron jackwagon, smiled at the scarred Mitra-blooded creature.

"Come now. We've not long till we reach Branderscar. Tell us your story. Why did someone so blessed by the Shining Lord try to slay the king?"

Stavros chuckled. "Blessed, you say." The shadowed eyes of the aasimar glinted burnished gold as they took in Dark Ned. "I'll tell you the story of how blessed I was."

"'They named me Stavrosian,' he began. 'After the Talar'stavrosian Chorus, the glorious twin planetars that guard the eastern walls of Mitra's Holy Halls. I'm told by the monks of Saint Macarius that I'm descended from one of them. My mother was nearly pureblooded and a saint as told by my father, though I'll never know for sure.'

'She died the night after my birth. None of the priests could say why, but my father, a Knight of the Alerion Order had his suspicions. So much so, he could not bear to see his son, and gave him up to the monasteries of Macarius for a time.'

'There I spent my childhood. Learning of the greatness of Mitra and his holy kingdom of Talingarde. And for time, the world made sense for the monks also called me blessed to be marked by the Shining Lord. But that changed as my father began to visit. Some say he was curious to the progress I was making. Others that he could not let go the passing of his wife. And I also heard whispers that my father believed he saw a sign of the Enemy on the night of my birth. He came frequently and asked questions, dark questions that the monks found frightful. They tried to dissuade my father from his course of reasoning, but he was adamant.'

'Something else troubled me as well. I'd found markings on the walls of the monastery, as if, in times past, the monks had worshipped other gods besides Mitra. But they would not answer my questions.'

'Once I became a youth, and my father was satisfied I'd been fully indoctrinated by the monks, he took me to live among Talireans and learn of the world beyond the cloistered living of monks. There he governed my every move within his house and new family.'

'My only freedom were the many menial errands in the cities my father visited on business. The new world was beyond imagining, but it's people soon began to bore me. The laws of the land were strict but fair, but allowed very little in the way of innovation of thought beyond the teachings of Mitra. I was witness many times to the swift justice of King Markadian V. Youthful indiscretion and angst led to minor violations of these laws and to the disgrace of my father and family.'

'I'd been spending too much time around those with indelicate tongues, cajoling with the lower classes and singing raucous songs. I'd also become an accomplished thief and purloined a fair share of tokens and coin. I was obsessed with learning of the old gods and their ways, but no law abiding citizen would hear me. I was forced to turn to the seedier regions and consort with those who dared to violate the sanctity of Mitra's laws.'

'Instead of turning me over to the King's Justice after I'd been caught for seeking forbidden knowledge, my father convinced the magistrate to give me over forever to the monks of Saint Macarius. Forever was my name stricken from my father's house. He cut his last tie to my mother and he made it known that he blamed me for her death, calling me murderer and thief of more than just coin, but of his hope. He prayed to Mitra that I'd find the darkest hole in the monastery and never bother any again.'

'I could not return. I escaped and that night, nearly died as I was ambushed upon by bandits. They thought me a lord until I told them of my plight. In doing so, they found a use for me. With nowhere to go, they gave me a choice; a red smile and eternity in a ditch, or join their band. Of course, I joined.'

'Thieving was the life for me. I had a true calling to it. But I also had a need to know just what my father saw in me. I carefully maneuvered the bandits to raid nearer and nearer my father's estates. But then the bandits, rich and brazen, decided they'd attack the monastery in which I was raised. It was then I remembered the old stones and the god markings there. That night, we entered and as the monk's slept, stole their gold and books. But one monk woke and in the resultant scuffle, I accidently killed the monk.'

'We fled into the night. The bandits feared the murder would bring the Knights down on them. And so, they decided to part company with me. Though I was somewhat distressed over the accidental killing, I was more excited about the knowledge I had acquired. They had been storing lost books in places they thought secret, but to my trained eyes, they were easy to find. Within dusty tomes I learned of the old gods and the fallen one that was the enemy of Mitra.'

'Burning desire to learn of this enemy led me to scour the land in search of its name, of its people and why this god was so hated. But in my search, I found that such knowledge was hidden in the temples of Mitra, and among her most promising of nobility. According to the laws of the Shining Lord, I was already damned for the murder of the monk. People were no longer an obstacle to me and my search. After all, what was one more black spot on my soul? Especially those that worshipped such an inflexible god. I wanted to be free of Mitra. I had to find the enemy.'

'It was a long and bloody search, but eventually I found a place forbidden and guarded by the Church. A place I'd learned was close to another world, a dark and hated place. A place that must house those I seek. I entered by stealth and upon a black altar offered my blood and prayers, and a holy relic I had acquired.'

'The altar cracked and broke, releasing a foul stench and hissing steam. Darkness crashed, a cold cloying miasma of greasy night. And for a time, I thought I had made a mistake, that I was doomed. But the darkness receded and before me stood a creature of such terrible beauty, I knew I had found my answer. Mitra be damned! His enemy was revealed!'

'The dark angel lunged at me, cruel fingers clutching my throat as a blade as black as my soul rested against my shoulder, ready to take my head. "So close you came, mortal. To death. For not the gift of hated Mitra, you would dangle above Dis and exist only to have your flesh devoured for generations." She leaned closer, her black eyes scouring my face and then she smiled. "A rage as cold and as black as mine, tempered for now, but easily broken. You do not worship Mitra? You sought me out?"'

'"No, I name not Mitra as my god," I choked. I then heard voices coming and cold realization washed over. I would be burned for this if they caught me consorting with the Enemy. The dark angel lifted me easily and brought me near a darkened alcove. "Tell me plainly. Why are you here?"

"The enemy of Mitra," I blurted. "I sought truth of its existence, and you now stand before me, truth that Mitra is not all. I seek his name. I can no longer be bound by the order of the Shining Lord. I would find a place outside his laws."

'The creature laughed, such cruel splendor, but there came a crash and I could hear the shouts of clerics coming closer.'

'The dark angel pushed me into the alcove. "Mitra," she spat. "This is his realm for a moment only. Asmodeus is the name you seek. Pray your worship is worthy of his name."

'Knights in gleaming armor, the divine power of Mitra pulsing a golden aura around them, burst into the room with the witch hunter Sir Balin of Karfeld. The dark angel looked down on me once, hidden in the alcove and whispered a single word to me. "Witness."'

'And so I witnessed the power of the Asmodeus' angel as she fought against the powers of Mitra. It was a glorious battle, but in the end, the dark angel was vanquished, her dark powers and rage snuffed out.'

'Long did I wait in silence. Mitra's followers had left, but the rage of the dark angel was left in me. Mitra's rule did not allow for other gods. How many were there, hiding in silence? My rage grew until before I realized it, I was on the road to the capital and to the very steps of House Darius.'

'Dressed in my finest stolen noble wares, I entered the grand halls with a dagger up my sleeve. The nobles of court remarked on my celestial appearance and I soon found myself within spitting distance of the King himself. Cold rage blinded me. I should have taken steps, but knowing how much Mitra had oppressed its people, had shunned me and branded me, I struck, lashing out in blind foolish rage. The guards of the King easily swept away my attack and a holy sword of a Knight of Alerion had struck my face, carving this thin line of platinum from my ear to my chin, scarring even the beard I grow to hide the shame of my failure.'
