Please explain education checks in inner sea magic

Rules Questions

What would the DC be for the edu checks?
The whole set of rules leaves me baffled. Is there more info in another book I missed?

The answer you seek is on page 19 of the book Inner Sea Magic.

"To increase his Fame score in a school, he must either make Education checks (a skill check with a DC of 15 + his current ranks in that skill) at points during a semester (see page 21), or perform a specific task or other extracurricular activity for the school."

A character’s Fame score increases by +1 every time he successfully makes a Education check or performs a task for his school. Every time a character’s Fame score increases, he earns an equal number of Prestige Points. The methods by which he earns opportunities to make Education checks vary by school.

Unfortunately, the Acadamae is the only school that allows this system to effectively work at character creation.

Spend 135 gp on Scroll of Summon Monster II
Summon a Lemure = GRADUATION (FAME 50) <- Guide to Korvosa, p. 53

So, we start with 10 extra spells in our spellbook from the beginning. This gives us a lot more choices than your regular starting Wizard. But your character will start out being either Lawful Neutral or Lawful Evil.

*It's even more if you don't choose a Summoning Specialization, but you can easily calculate that out for yourself.

It still is nowhere near as good as the Collegiate Wizard feat (Complete Arcane, p. 181) back in the days of D&D 3.5, but it does provide you a nice background.

Wow, that already explains a lot.

Thank you!

I wasn't really aware of PFS so far.
Now that I dug deeper some more questions popped up.

Is there only one edu check per semester? p. 19 (1st column, bottom) says edu checkS during the semester but doesn't give a number or timing during the semester.

How would I choose which skill to use for any given edu check?

Would it be possible to make an edu check for each skill assotiated with the school per semester?

Just found the box on page 21 and was able to answer the questions myself.

Better layout of the book might have helped.

Wait, the years on acadamae have four semesters (period of about 6 months)?

Each school defines the length of their own term. The book uses the word "semester" to mean "term".

The Academae really has quarters, not semesters.

I see, thanks for that info. I only own the inner sea combat and didn't recall anything like that.

Traits like Rich parents can increase starting gp so you can alter CloudCobra's list a little. With 900 gp starting wealth, after the 400 in tuition and the 135 for the scroll, you can get back 3 PP from Scholarship Aid and still have 65 gp for equipment. That's 3 more spells or you could lose 2 spells and pick up a imp minion.

Not bad at character creation. ;)

Actually I was planning to have the studies take place during the first few character levels.

That's cool. It just means that you can get back more of those PP's by paying for tuitions and that opens up more spells/abilities to spend them on.

I'll start as rogue and will enroll in the Acadamae at the beginning of Curse otCT.

any suggestions what this might entail from a rules point of view? Fluff is also welcome.

May I ask why a normally non-spellcasting rogue? Is it unchained? As a suggestion, there is an archetype that allows the rogue to cast, Eldritch Scoundrel. That way you start out a caster.

A friend will play a full caster for the first time in the upcoming campaign. He chose sorcerer. I don't want to rob him of the experience by always getting the next spell level before him. On the other hand CotCT is an excellent chance to integrate the Acadamae. I didn't want to miss that.

And of course it fit's the background of my character well
