Dirk Gently's Holistic detective agency (Netflix)

I just finished this nifty little series on Netflix. Based on the Douglas Adams books it follows the title character as he investigates a Murder involving a Mysterious Cult, a 19th century inventor, a poor down on his luck Bellboy, a missing rock star, a Corgi and a killer kitten.

This was interesting, strange and a mix of american and british storytelling. Not going to be for everyone, and I got the impression it's not following the books but is more using the books to make up it's own story. I enjoyed it though and looking forward to seeing season 2.

Max Landis did a great job on this one. I also checked it out on BBC America.

It is loosely inspired by the books, which does allow people to be surprised, even if they've read them.

I love the kitten.

I really enjoyed it. Pairs a light theme with some really terrible events, in what turns out to be a compelling story.

And, no, the show doesn't follow the books even remotely. And yet, still good!

The books are actually referenced in series. Dirk once met Thor, and had a mystery involving a couch. These were from the plot of the novels, implying that the novels happened at some point before the series began.

Although.... Dirk in the novels was... different. Hinted in the show that he might have even been a different person. Definitely a smoker (there's an opening scene in the novel where he opens a hole in the clothes he's sleeping under, lights a cigarette, sucks it down to the filter, and lights another before bothering to fully wake up). Oh, and Zen Navigation (following someone wherever they go based off the theory that they know where they are going and therefor following them will get him to where he wants to go.)

Additional tack on: Watch the intros. Pay attention to the background music. Everything is interconnected. And you might just get what you deserve...
