Tooth & Hookah Intent Check

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

rulebook page 14 sez:
"After evading a summoned card or resolving the encounter with it, never put it anywhere other than back in the box unless the card that caused you to summon it instructs you otherwise."

This usually involves "Summon and encounter," which in itself doesn't care whether you succeed or fail, "Summon and defeat," which requires you to succeed to get an effect, and "Summon and acquire," which allows you to put it in your hand if you succeed instead of back to the box. There's also Pirate Hunting, which tells you the summoned card sticks around until it's defeated.

So we come to the Tooth & Hookah:

"At This Location:
When you fail to acquire an ally, shuffle it into this location deck.

To Close:
Summon and acquire a random ally."

When you attempt to close, rules as written say if you succeed at acquiring the ally you add it to your hand and close the location, but if you fail to acquire the ally you don't close the location and the ally goes into the location's deck.

I don't have any objections to this. I think it's the first time a summon power can interact with another power on the same card, so I just want to check that this works as intended or if a change, such as "After evading a summoned card or resolving the encounter with it, never put it anywhere other than back in the box unless the power that caused you to summon it instructs you otherwise." is warranted.

The location is the card that caused you to summon it and it's instructing you to do otherwise. Seems clear to me; I don't think a change is warranted.

I agree. It's an interacion that hasn't happened before so I just wanted to check for intent.

Hmmm... I'm not so sure that is intended. But I couldn't say for sure. I will say I didn't treat it that way. But I could be wrong in doing so.

The intent is that this card is indeed instructing you otherwise, so the ally goes into the location deck.

Thanks for the confirmation!
