Greater channel smite

Hi,

I'm having a hard time understanding the "Greater" Channel smite feat, comparing to the "basic" one.

Is it all about allocating damage dice to different attacks and avoid "loosing" dices to a missed attack ?

My current character is an antipaladin with 5d6 negative energy damage on touch of corruption, how would it turn up using a Greater channel smite in combat ?

Thx

You get a pool of 5d6 for this round. You allocate 3d6 to your first strike and 2d6 to your second. If you miss the first hit, the 3d6 go back to the pool. If you hit, the enemy gets a will save to halve the 3d6, but they are gone either way. On your second attack, after having missed, you can now use all 5 dice in the pool (they are lost if not used this round)and if you miss, you lost your channel energy without any effect. If you hit, the enemy gets his save to halve the 5d6.

This is one of the feats I never take with my healers, as it is horribly underpowered. If I use my standard channel I affect everyone in the area, and need no attack roll. And don't get me going about the efficiency of 5d6/10d6 vs a level appropriate foe...I might as well throw dwarven battlebread.

It can also prevent overkill. If your enemy is low on health, you can allocate just 2 or 3 dice on your first attack, then when they drop use your remaining dice on their friend with your iterative attack.

yes. Let's say you have 5d6 and 2 swings.

The enemy in front of you has 1 HP, (the gm accidentally told you) You swing with 0d6 and kill them and then swing at the other guy next to you with 5d6.

Or you want to damage two guys, you can do first swing with 3d6 and second with 2d6.

Or yes, if you do 5d6 on the first and miss then you can do 5d6 on the second attack.
