Scorched Hand

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

The Mummy's Mask Henchman Scorched Hand card says: "If defeated by less than 5, you may draw any number of the boons in the location deck this henchman came from."

Drawing a card is defined as taking the top card of a face down deck.

What if I draw a Bane? Do I encounter it? Do I ignore it? I am clearly not exploring. I am not examining a deck. I am not searching a deck. I am drawing any number of boons.

I am confused.

Unless stated otherwise, we're playing all of those cards (most of the henchmen in the Scorched Hand scenario) as saying:

"...you may search the location deck for any number of boons and add them to your hand."
Pretty much any other interpretation doesn't seem to make sense.

Agreed with Longshoot that in this case SEARCH would be a better word than DRAW because the "draw" rules aren't clear for that specific case

When you draw a card from a facedown deck, such as a character deck, a location deck, the blessings deck, or any other deck the game tells you to create, draw from the top of the deck.

When you draw a card from a faceup pile, such as your discard pile, the blessings discard pile, or any other pile the game tells you to create, draw a card of your choice.
When you draw a card from the box, unless you are told to draw a specific card, draw a random card of the appropriate type by shuffling the cards you’re drawing from and drawing the top card.

It is unclear if:

1) I must decide the number of boons I will put in my hand before doing anything?
2) I get to examine the full location before doing anything else?
3) I get to draw cards one by one (setting aside banes) and I must keep all boons I find until I say stop (or reach the number selected depending of the answer to 1 above) OR can for each one decide on the fly to put it in my hand or not and process to the next card until I say stop (or reach the number selected depending of the answer to 1 above)?
4) Do I shuffle after?
5) And there may be other questions I don't have in mind yet.

This also matters, because in the -currently- purely hypothetical situation, where two villains end up being in that deck - you're probably supposed to shuffle them, and the 'draw' action doesn't require a shuffle on its own.

Hehe ninjaed while I was editing. Totally agree Longshot.

For all the other henchmen, you are already searching the location deck when you draw the boons. For example:

Dog Soldier emphasis mine wrote:
If defeated by less than 5, you may immediately attempt to close the location this henchman came from; if you succeed, before closing, you may draw any number of the boons in the location deck.

And the closing rules:

MM Rulebook p15 emphasis mine wrote:

If you succeed at meeting the When Closing requirement, search the location deck for villains. If you find any, banish all nonvillain cards from the location deck. The location is not closed—but at least you know where the villains are! If you would banish any cohorts this way, you may encounter them instead.

If you didn’t find any villains, perform the When Permanently Closed effect: First, apply any effects that say “before closing.” Then banish all of the cards from the location deck; it is now closed.

The henchman's power is a "before closing effect" in this case. So your order of actions will be:

1. Attempt to close.
2. Succeed.
3. Search location deck for villains and don't find any.
4. Apply "before closing effect" to draw any boons you want.
5. Banish any cards left in the location deck (boons you didn't want and banes).
6. Location is closed.

The hypothetical is already addressed for the non-Scorching Hand as well. If you find the villain, you banish all the other cards and don't get the "before closing" effect from the henchman.

That is for everyone but the Scorched Hand. It does seem that perhaps the Scorched Hand needs a bit of help. Since all the others are obviously a search action, I'd treat it the same way for now. So:

1. Search the location deck.
2. Decide which boons to draw.
3. Shuffle the deck.
4. Add villain to random open location via scenario power.

OK I was mislead by the fact that in the original post, the "before closing" wasn't there. If it's related to closing, then all is clear.

"Before closing" is not in the Scorched Hand's text, because defeating the Scorched Hand doesn't allow you to attempt to close the location. It just says you get to draw all the boons.

The other henchmen in this scenario do allow you to attempt to close the location and if successful allow you to draw all the boons in the location.

So, the difference is the Scorched Hand lacks the "attempt to close" text. I'm saying that since in all the other henchmen you are already searching, there was no need to specify that you search for the boons. For the Scorched Hand, the text seems to just be a modification of the other henchmen, with the "attempt to close" part removed. Unfortunately, in removing that text the fact that you are already searching is also removed. So, I'd treat it as a search for Scorched Hand. And I wouldn't be surprised to see an FAQ making that clear.

Thanks for all the replies.

I will treat Scorched Hand as saying: "If defeated by less than 5, you may search for any boons you want in the location deck this henchman came from."

You're searching the deck. Added to FAQ.
