Shrieking Plant

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

1) So, what's up with that: when examined, the Plant makes you succeed at a check, or it is undefeated... without actually making you encounter it ?!? Or is assigning a Defeated/Undefeated status outside of an encounter something we're doing now?

2) If undefeated, the Plant makes you examine the top 3 cards, and encounter the first monster you meet. Let's say they're all monsters, but the first one has a Trigger that makes you encounter it. Both the Trigger and the Plant's forced encounter fire up simultaneously (so the Plant's encounter is not 'banked' for the second monster), right?

3) Bonus question: Embalming Fluid says:
"Reveal to add 2 and the Poison trait to you combat check; if the Bane is Undead - ignore its immunizes"

That second part, does it apply only for purposes of adding the +2 Poison, or it applies for all future cards/powers you might play in the encounter?

In a vacuum, I'd assume it's the former.

However, there were a few card in WotR (Desna Bow and Planar Crossbow, I think) that had an "...and you can ignor the monster's immunities" power, without actually adding Traits that monsters were immune to, so I assumed this wording means "ignore the immunities until the end of the encounter". Is this correct?

When you examine this card, succeed at a Stealth or Survival 9 check; otherwise, the Shrieking Plant is undefeated.

If undefeated, examine the next 3 cards of your location deck and encounter the first monster examined. Then banish the Shrieking Plant.

1. So, if you examine the Shrieking Plant and fail the Stealth/Survial 9 check or if you encounter it and fail to defeat it, you examine the next 3 cards and encounter the first monster examined. Then banish the Shrieking Plant. I guess anything else related to being undefeated kicks in too (location or scenario powers).

2. Hmm... So, I definitely don't think that Shrieking Plant would just go to the second monster. But, I could see a case where if you failed to defeat it "when examined" you'd encounter it again from the Shrieking Plant.

3. I'd say you get to ignore its immunities for the rest of the encounter.

1. Sure. Why not?
2. That's actually covered in the Examine rules: "If a card allows you to examine a card and then encounter it, and the card you examine says that when you examine it, you encounter it, encounter it only once."
3. The Golden Rules say "If a card tells you to ignore something, the thing you’re ignoring never has any effect on you." The only thing that shuts *that* off is that cards don't have memories, so it lasts until you're done with this encounter.

Just to make sure I'm getting that - if I DO succeed at the check, the Plant is NOT defeated?

Also, on the "why not" - well, because nothing in the rules says so. The defeated/undefeated is discussed only in the context of an encounter (and Resolve the Encounter, more specifically.) The first power on the Plant (the Trigger) says it's undefeated, but why should I care? "I'm not encountering the plant, why should I even read its second power?"
Maybe I'm too set in my ways, but that was literally my first reaction. And I know this is your box of toys, guys, and you can do whatever you want with it, but this really is a curveball you're throwing us.

Wait, wait - so, you're saying the undefeated monster will NOT get shuffled back into the deck?

That is what I was saying, but what I was saying doesn't matter, since Vic pointed out the rules cover this.

If you succeed at the check, nothing at all happens. You examined it safely.

Right—it's not defeated (but neither is it undefeated). We've had checks that define only the consequences of failing a check (or only the consequences of succeeding) from the very beginning—the other side of the coin is "nothing happens."

The Trigger Trait sidebar on page 15 says "When you examine a card and you see that red highlight, make sure you read the card and do what it says!" Read the whole card, not just the first power.

I believe Shrieky Plant was also the first PACG card designed by Lisa Stevens. It bounced from set to set until we finally had a story where you cared how quiet you were.

I should point out a corollary here: when you encounter a card and see that it has the Trigger trait, you don't get to skip the first power. Some of them (like Mirage and Conflagration) begin "When you examine or encounter this card..."

It was inspired by a classic dungeon hazard.
