Earthbound
Final Fantasy 4-5
King of Monsters 1&2
Kirby Dreamland 3
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Interestingly some friends and me had a bit of a nostalgia gaming night a week or so ago and actually booted up all of the above for a bit. (The rule was when you died/hit 1/2hr play time you had to pass the controller and the new player picked a new game). We remembered a bit belatedly that Secret of Mana was actually 3 player, that was a quirky thing back in the day, but made for some great "Oh, Yeah! I remember now." moments.

I liked most of Secret of Evermore, but the last area (the future) seemed too quick/rushed. Still a fun game.
The Super Star Wars games were great - difficult, but very good. I'm sure there's some sort of licensing craziness that would have to go on to get them on a collection like this.
Chrono Trigger is arguably the best CRPG ever made.

I think because the game was so difficult to decipher was one of the reason I loved it. 7th saga was like this too.

Nintendo will be releasing more units on December 5th. It will be better to wait for that. Though I do find it interesting that this item will not be available for black Friday.
That's the first thing that crossed my mind as well. For $60 too? It seems that they underestimated the demand for this product.

I am really surprised myself. My company told the distributer that the demand was there and the supply was "stupid low". They sold out instantly and I expect the exact same in a few weeks which will be your last shot before x-mas. In fact, Target's ad ran Sunday 11/13 and had the Nintendo Classic in the ad even though supplies had been depleted immediately on Friday 11/11....

balls the size of church bells. Either that T or incredibly lucky. I can't tell you how many guys were running translation scams.
What can I say, I'm blessed. Of course, I have yet to play it extensively, so maybe it just played the title screen. :)

Par for the course for Nintendo. They always have tiny production for their consoles at first, despite having a huge number of early adopters. It seems like a marketing move to me, artificially increasing demand, but I'm ignorant enough of the actual logistics that I couldn't say it with confidence.

I agree about the marketing move, although I think the timing is a little weird. Seems like they could have done a low inventory release back in Aug/Sep and then drove home a BF sales extravaganza.
Inventory wise, no not usual for Nintendo. The Wii actually was much more heavily inventoried on release then either xbox 360 or PS3. Combined with a lower purchase price and new gimmick it proved to be a big quite a hit. Which is why I was surprised to see stupid low shipments for the classic. /shrug

Not to be *that guy*, but I would play it for a while. Make sure you didn't drop money on the partially translated emulation as a cart.
It's a fine military tradition that young soldiers spend their money on useless crap.

Update: if you want one of these better line up at your local store this week. I hear folks are about 60-90 min before store open lined for them. I guess knowing the layout of your store helps, as often its a foot race to the product. I believe a case holds 6 units and depending on sales of your local store, they are likely to get somewhere between 6-18 NES Classics.
If dealing with all this to get one sounds crappy, wait until after x-mas when supplies should meet demand. You can buy one at your convenience then.

Yeah, I was thinking about adding it to a Christmas list we use for our round robin on the Wife's side of the family, and then checked on availability via Amazon and a few other sites and saw the jacked up prices 2nd-hand and online retailers are asking. I'll just run an emulator for now. My main interest was to have the NES Mini as a means to eventually experience some of the games I grew up on with my son, but he's not even 3 yet, so I can wait a bit.
Ryzoken |
Dude, they're still shopping at stores instead of from home. Of COURSE they have no idea that emulations are a thing.
When the scalpers are using bots to obtain units, normal customers have little choice but to shop brick and mortar.
Then, too, there are the people who are uncomfortable entering into emulation due to not being familiar with copyright law and how it intersects with emulation. Is it legal to obtain an emulator and a bunch of roms if you don't otherwise own the games or devices being emulated? If so, is it ethical?
My answer was to just buy an actual NES and the handful of games I'd actually want to play. It cost more than the NES classic, but I have a 1:1 match for the machine in my memories (well, I did, until I modded the unit, replacing the spring tray and 72 pin connector with a straight load solution; the Blinking Light Win mod kit)
I'll still be keeping a weather eye open for an nes classic, because it'd make for a good portable solution when visiting the in-laws. Don't want to drag my 20 year old machine around, lest it become damaged. Let the cheapo emulation machine bear the brunt of travel.

Or wait until after the holidays when more stock is available.

That assumes Nintendo intends to continue production, which could be true. They may decide to instead make it a limited print run and move on to the Switch or a SNES classic limited print run.
Point is: there's nothing wrong with people lining up at stores to buy a product for themselves or a loved one. Hell, in my household it was tradition to go line up on Black Friday. A bonding exercise where we sat out in the cold and whined so that we could get Mom the free snow globes at Macy's or that new tv to replace our broken one.
Ryzoken |
It's still a choice.
I'm not entirely clear what your stance is here. I'm arguing that the decision to stand in the rain for a hotly contested product is valid and not at all deserving of scorn given the realities of the situation (scalpers, low supply, no guarantee of restock after holiday season, dubious legal/ethical alternatives) and the possible familial traditions that may surround the practice. What is your stance?

To be clear, I wasn't scorning anyone.
While I personally wouldn't wait all night in freezing cold and snow, they didn't seem to mind and were well prepared with tents and arctic sleeping bags. :-)
Plus we had a one per customer limit so people weren't doing it to make money.
Frankly, more power to them. :-)

That could well be. I tend to be serious in my solitude, and whimsical in company.
I'm working on it.On the plus side, rumor is that Best Buy will be getting some stock for in store only around the 20th. So... maybe line up on the 19th if you're looking to get one in time for a Christmas present for a loved one?
