Brandon Sanderson novels optioned for film for huge sums, 2 movies in pre-production

Movies

Chinese production company DMG has picked up the rights to all of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere universe books - past and present - for colossal sums of money.

The company has earmarked $270 million as 50% of the production budget for three films. They will be looking for international partners to pick up the rest of the budget, which given who they've worked with in the past (they've co-produced everything from Iron Man 3 to Looper) probably won't be hard.

The first two movies will be The Way of Kings and Mistborn: The Final Empire. Exactly how they're going to boil those books (especially Way of Kings) down into a single movie remains to be seen. They've already appointed writer-producers to Way of Kings and are prioritising the project on a fast-track to the screen.

I could see doing the first Mistborn book and waiting to see how it does to see if they'll make sequels. The first book is pretty standalone.

Way of Kings I imagine will be trimmed a lot, particular in the bits near the start with the bridge carriers. They could boil that down to a montage and hopefully not lose TOO much of Kaladin's arc. This is the one I'm most wary of though since I can see them absolutely gutting that book to fit it into one movie and we end up with another Eragon movie, or Half-Blood Prince level of "EVERYTHING IS GONE".

We need stormlight 3 before movie 1...

Yeah, I think Mistborn 1 could definitely stand alone depending on how they put it together. I'd love to see what a good special effects crew (not to mention good actors) could do with some of the metal burning stuff. As for Stormlight... I'd really prefer to see that get forward a bit more in books before we see movies of it. Maybe if they break the books up a bit they would work better, but that would be pretty tough with their tendency to be really slow.

Oh, I would love to see Elantris as a movie. Especially if it would be so successfull that it would convince Mr. Sanderson to write the long awaited sequel :D

Stormlight 3 will be out next year. I know Brandon is keen on stepping it up and getting Stormlight 4 out two years later. He knows he can't keep taking three years on each book, the series will take forever.

They are also looking at doing a third film simultaneously or nearly, so Elantris or Warbreaker could be in the frame. More likely Elantris, as Sanderson I think has Elantris II and III planned for after he's finished his next YA project and the final Wax and Wayne Mistborn book.

Will way of kings include a HUD? I'm still fuzzy on how much stormlight energy each of Szeth's abilities cost, and just how much he regenerates by absorbing more. They should certainly show all upgrade windows too.

The Mistborn movie now has a writer, whilst the first draft of the first Stormlight movie is apparently complete.

I hope he heavily consults during the process. If shardplate ends up being like the live action Guyver, will be very disappointed.

I have a bad feeling about this...
