Can we get automatic thread locking on old threads?

Website Feedback

I'm imagining any thread that hasn't been responded to in 6? months gets auto-locked.

And yes, the recent, heart-stopping thread-necro about BobJ inspires this request. But it would eliminate a lot of noise when people google and don't pay attention. Then we get 20 posts pointing out that the "correction" of the old thread is pointless because it's so old.

Actually, a large, bold notice on the page for these old threads would be helpful to warn readers that google led them to a probably-out-of-date discussion.

By Urgathoa's boney buttocks, I say thee nay. Oft in my search for knowledge, only a necromancied post on an ancient thread has revealed the current rule.

The locking of threads shall is trading of new thoughts for efficiency. 'Tis a glamour which will only result in retred thoughts and searches inefficient.

Who is Bobj?

Nope. While we understand that other forums do this, there are some pretty useful old threads hanging about that have been resurrected over the years. It may also mean that something ambiguous way-back-then has been clarified or changed, and potential new posts indicating as such may be useful to anyone stumbling in via search engines.

Seriously, who?

A Google search brings up...this thread.

A forum search brings up...this thread.

No other mention of a BobJ ANYWHERE.

Haha, I did the same thing!

A link to the act of necromancy in question. ^_^

That one's still not as good as the thread somebody necro'd from lie 2008 saying KC was leaving the boards.

And yeah, I did that on purpose. May the OP writhe in temporary pain trying to figure out who KC is!

I couldn't find Sundakan's reference in the 30 secs I spent googling.

You know what thread I'd like to see resurrected? The one where the werewolf dragon born monk/sorcerer/barbarian (or whatever he was) was complaining about his companions falling into the 10 ft. deep pit he dug all the way round their 20 ft. wide camp every night before tucking in, because they lacked the Dexterity to leap over it when awakened by the GM's nightly raids.

Gold.

Yeah this one was confusing the hell out of me, especially as I had argued with KC about some stuff just five minutes before I found it. Took me a while to stop gasping and look at the date.

I remember that. :)

Maybe there could be a warning if there was over a year since the last post or something? (Similar to the 'are you sure you want to delete this?' query).

That would prevent accidentally responding to old posts, but still allow people to revisit threads they want to from the past.

And lose all the joy of seeing forumites get bent out if shape over a thread necro? Never!

Chris L., would there be any way to alert a user that they wre posting in a dormant thread.

Of course there's the time-stamp, but I'm talking about something much more obvious.

I'm pretty sure this would put a certain necromancer out of business.

Considering the number of people who fail to "Read this before you post in this section" in the Paizo general discussion board, we could install smell-o-forum with an alert and people would still miss it.

There are threads in homebrew section that I might want to revive in future, regardless of the amount of time that passed since last posting in them.

People complain when someone starts a new thread. "Search!"
People complain when someone resumes an old thread. "Necro!"

People complain. This is the one constant.

What amuses me is that this thread isn't the first one on the subject. A simple search would have found several others.

Seriously, we gotta cart these geezers out of here. Everyone knows shitposting is a young person's game!

Hey, sorry, I'm a little late.

The entertainment value alone demonstrates why the answer to the thread title is "no".

One of my favorite things about necro threads is browsing through them and stumbling across some lengthy missive from myself ten years ago and thinking "What a dufus!"

Still don't know who Bobj is.
