Can you make a combat maneuver instead of an AoO?

Rules Questions

I know that you can't grapple as an AoO unless you have grab or something because normally its a standard action. But what about trip, sunder, and disarm since all it says is in place of a melee attack in the description?

I believe so, yes.

An AoO is a melee attack, so anything you can do as a melee attack is fair.

Thanks for the answers.

Just for the sake of completeness:

These combat maneuvers can be performed in place of a melee attack (and therefore as an AoO):

  • Disarm
  • Sunder
  • Trip

Keep in mind that these maneuvers make you the subject of Attack of Opportunities themself (if you do not have the corresponding feat).
