Tim, instructions say that Bestiary entries can be shorter than 750 words. Can they be longer than that too?

No. Up to 750 words. That keeps creatures at one page each for layout, and not more.

Nice try.

Any chance of some feedback if we didn't make the cut? Or a hug?

I would be happy to give feedback on fiction pieces, if anyone would like it. I've had a lot of experience writing, editing, and workshopping.
If you wanted to start a Pathfinder writing group, I think you'd find there is a demand for it.

We've had such a thing in several different forms.....Pathfinder Chroniclers was possibly the first iteration. After that, we had at least one or two groups of contributors that pooled together to help each other out.

We at Wayfinder LOVE these writing groups, and are trying to figure out a better way to help them out. If you are coming to PaizoCon, we would very much like to have a bigger conversation about it. (Maybe we'll try another Wayfinder seminar, if people would show up for it?)

It is unlikely that I will be at Paizocon this year. I live on the east coast, so it's a bit of a hike.

I'd be down for that. That reminds me, I still have to get my PaizoCon tickets...

Schedule permitting, I'd be happy to help crit people's pieces. I also write fiction, so I've got a decent amount of experience with that.

Follow-up question related to this.

If a bestiary entry has a [Creature's name] Character entry added it.

The Bestiary entry by itself respect the 750 or less word count limit; the [Creature's name] Character entry by itself also respect the 750 or less word count entry. However the combined entry is over by more than 5%.

Will they be counted as 2 (of the 3) entries to the Magazine or must the word count be reduced to 750+5% at the most?

Edit: Not to nickpick or question the rules, I just want to make sure I submit a legal/valid entry.

I am assuming that you are supplying a playable race creature. So, you need to keep it 750 words IN TOTAL. Look at Paizo's bestiaries. Deep One Hybrid, Ghoran, Shabti, Skinwalker (all in Bestiary 5) are one page. And I would count as one entry.

Creature templates are more complex, and typically take 2 pages to pull off. THOSE usually fall under Crunch pieces, allowing them to go to 1500 words.

Perfect. Thank you for the clarification.

And if you want to practice and get some feedback from TemplateFu, his second RPG Superstar like challenge is now open...

I like the idea of T-Fu's thread.

I just want to be sure that posting there, in a thread visible to the public, doesn't disqualify or harm the chances of an idea being picked for WF.

When I saw the first challenge was a fey item, I did a double take. But I guess that was set before the next theme had been picked?

No, we made the fey decision independently, although there has been a call for fey as a theme for quite some time.

As for posting ideas on a thread, no that shouldn't disqualify it. We've taken several articles or concepts from messageboard posts and put them in Wayfinder. My main concern is that someone ELSE will take that idea or concept, and publish it somewhere else before we do. Then there's copyright issues, and headaches, and so on. Keeping your gems private insures against that risk.

Wow, OMG, etc... Great Minds think alike! Does this mean I have a designer mind set now? - grin.

I have no connection with Wayfinder (other than as an occasional contributor), and am trying to come up with popular challenges for designers to practice with and enjoy in that design thread.

With the recently released Fey supplement mentioned in the Challenge 1 rules, I went with that because the fey seemed so darned popular at the time. I hadn't spotted Wayfinder was going that way for a theme, so apologise for that, I hope I haven't caused any problems.

Some of the feedback I wrote on the submissions might help potential contributors with their submissions and ideas, so feel free to have a look if you think it will help you. At worst, it should sort out your formatting for when you submit a wondrous item! ;)

If you would prefer to have stuff reviewed privately for submitting to Wayfinder, feel free to ping me a message and I will see how, and if, I can fit you in to my busy schedules.

Scarab Sages

Thanks for the replies, Tim and T-F.
I wasn't dissing the idea of a review group, just worried about the same issues mentioned by Tim, that someone might share the perfect submission, only to find some third party prints it, and they now can't do a thing with it.

I've benefitted from the acceptance of a reworked article (#6) and a previously-seen forum entry, but I cautiously sent both with my eyes open, knowing they could be bounced.
It could be a tough lesson for a new hopeful to learn.

Scarab Sages

As far as new material, I've a couple of ideas, though I fear the most off the wall one may be too large, or art-intensive to print, unless they can borrow official art, as in the ACG articles?

I certainly need to find some playtesters for it, since my disorganised home group are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard in that capacity.

Still no 'Official' call up for Wayfinder #18 yet? I'm already at work on my next submission! Fey/First World will be an awesome central theme!

Ehe! I already finished all THREE!
Tim, a question- are we allowed to quote a recent novel as the article's introduction?

Shadow Lodge

I know it's too late, but one theme which would be fun in future is Cracked(humor).

My flocks of fire breathing buffalo chicken that roam the planes of Arcadia need a home.

According to the Community Use Policy:

You may descriptively reference trademarks, proper names (characters, deities, artifacts, places, etc.), locations and characters from products listed in Section 1 of this list.

Section 1 includes all the Pathfinder Tales novels.

However, I do not think it gives us permission to quote directly, word for word, from the novels.

I meant novels that were not Pathfinder. I wanted to make an homage to Pratchett by quoting a phrase from one of his novels.

Sorry, I'm not sure on that at all. I would rather not tangle with copyright issues with Mr. Pratchett's publisher.

Timitius, if we were to cite Wayfinder as a previous publication credit, how would you prefer we format the title? Just "Wayfinder"? or "Wayfinder Magazine"?

Interesting question!

I would say "Wayfinder"

If referring to a specific issue, say #12, then I would refer to it like so:

Wayfinder #12, Osirion: Ancient Sands.

Are we looking at ~August again for the cut-off on Wayfinder #18?

More likely September-ish. I will be posting the Call here in April, giving everyone around 6 months to cook something up for the fey issue.

Keep an eye on this thread.

Since #17 is going to be bigger than programmed (if I understand correctly), will the submissions that were put "in queue" be thrown in?

Incorrect....I said #18 and future issues would likely exceed the 76 page limit.

Issue #17 still suffers from coming straight off of producing #16, trying to finish the Bestiary book, AND getting it all done in time for PaizoCon. The crunch is REAL. Sorry, we are trying to hold this to the 76 pages still.

Sorry.

Starting to think about PaizoCon and our traditional Wayfinder Meet and Eat event, for May 25, around 6pm-ish! I think we'll end up at Sharp's again. This is for our Contributors (authors, editors, and artists) that are attending PaizoCon, giving them a pre-con event to meet others and sit down and chat. I'm going to assume around 16 people again, but if we can get a head count early on, that will help.

Assuming all my flights are on time, you can count me in.

I've created a thread for the Meet and Eat.

I've noted everyone who's responded here, but if you want to head over to the other thread and formally RSVP, that'd be cool too.

Looking forward to seeing you all!
