Can you suggest a class / archetype / alternate magic system for this player?

Advice

As this is quite relevant, it should be mentioned that this question is in regards to a one-person campaign type of thing. I'm the GM and my husband is the player (though I run several other party members for him). So whether something is fair on other players, specifically, isn't a problem, obviously.

This player wants to take levels in a magic class. We can't decide between us on what he should be. He'd like to be a sorcerer, but wants more spell variation, so he suggested the ability to cast spells that aren't on his sorcerer list in a ritual format, so he could cast a spell he doesn't 'know' over, say a week or so. (Scrolls for spells he doesn't know don't appeal to him). He also wants to create magical/wondrous items using spells not on his list. He had the idea of using another wizard's spellbook to use the spells he doesn't have in order to do this.

Is there a class that would suit his needs, rather than altering the sorcerer class? Is there a way to do this that won't break the game world? I'm quite new to GMing and he already finds most encounters too easy, unless poison is involved (elves, right?).

Consider Occult Rituals, Words of Power, and just cranking Spellcraft to the point where +5 DC for missing a requirement is no big deal.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Arcanist might be up your player's alley.

Sounds like he's wanting to recreate the Arcanist.

Edit: ninja'd by less than a minute! Sneaky elfsessess...

3rd vote for Arcanist. He'll have the spell versatility of a Wizard and the slot versatility of a Sorcerer, and with the Fast Study arcane exploit he can swap spells out on the fly if he needs to.

For crafting, he doesn't actually need to meet any of the crafting prerequisites other than having the associated crafting feat. If he doesn't know the spell or meet the caster level requirement, it just increases the crafting DC by 5 for each prerequisite he doesn't meet. If the increased DC is an issue, he can always rely on another player or on scrolls/wands to provide the spell.

Solo campaign, remember.

Wordcasting is always an option for customizing spells, but it gets kinda complicated.

Unsworn Shaman is not spontaneous but it's pretty damn good at this.

Occult rituals rather than a character class sound like what you're after. They're essentially the same as D&D 3.5 incantations if you need more inspiration along those lines.

Another vote for Arcanist. Even vanilla is very very versatile.

arcanist or even shaman would do

A razmiran sorcerer can cast spells of the cleric list. The d20pfsrd has it listed as False Priest because they can't use Golarion setting stuff.

Arcanist looks like the closest to what he wants, but there is still a preparation aspect which he doesn't like (I really like the look of that class though!). However, I will mention the Quick Study exploit to him.

Diachronos - thanks for pointing that out about the crafting feat, that makes things a lot simpler at least.

We've come to the agreement that he can just be a sorcerer who can learn additional spells, but those spells can only be used by expending a good deal of time to cast them (if I'm remembering correctly, anyway). Though he said he thought he should give up the bonus spells granted by the bloodline, at least, to make up for it. I think that makes sense? I'm trying not to be unfair on him. He is multiclassing (4 levels in Rogue at the moment), but in his case I think that's more of an advantage to him.

Maybe Ring of Spell Knowledge which allows to learn 1 additional spell (up to 4th level) as a standard action and you can also relearn a new one :)
