[PFS] Thinking about a melee summoner

Advice

Liberty's Edge

I think probably a halfling for the saving throw bonus and +2 DEX to help compensate for light armor. I want to use a elemental quadruped eidolon, because that seems to be the only way I can combine good alignment with a mount. I want to play a small race to have a medium mount.

Stats (after racial adjustment)
STR: 14
DEX: 14
CON: 13
INT: 7
WIS: 12
CHA: 17
HP: 13 (inc. F/C bonus & feat)

Feat: Toughness
Traits: Resilient, History of Heresy

Spells:
Level 0: Acid Splash, Detect Magic, Light, Read Magic
Level 1: Rejuvenate Eidolon (lesser), Shield

Stat Increases: Level 4: +1 CON, Level 8: +1 CHA

EDIT:
Eidolon: Elemental (Air), Quadruped, Evolution: Mount

You can get by with a lot less than 17 cha as a summoner. Especially the unchained version; their spellcasting is very underwhelming. This might let you boost one of your physical stats a bit more.

Good point, especially since I plan to specialize in buffing spells.

Charisma 12 is enough to start with if you don't mind leaning heavily on a headband of charisma. With the Halfling racials, 14 is pretty good while conserving your precious points.

If you want to hit stuff as a Summoner, try to push yourself for a 15 or even 16 strength. Your attack is decent thanks to size bonuses, but the strength penalty and weapon dice reduction will really hold you back in the damage department. If you're willing to take a hit to your Eidolon and spells, you can take a 1 level Fighter dip and pick up a lance; I garuntee you'll see results . (See my profile for an example build)

As a melee person, Strength is your main stat. Condider starting your other stats as even numbers and just putting points into Strength as you level.

A lot of it depends on how often you want to use the Summon Monster SLA, which is tied into Charisma.

Drop you charisma down to 12-14, raise your strength to 15, and don't dump intelligence (or you will sit there bored during most non-combat encounters.)

I would look to bump Con and Dex go for a Finesse Weapon, maybe even a Whip. The issue for melee Summoner is the lack of Fort saves, and armour, so a Dex build, ideally with Reach gives you a better chance of staying up.

A mithral breastplate and a trait gets you a 0 ACP and lets you keep casting without spell failure.

Not the best AC, but respectable.

A dex build would also work with fencing grace and a buckler.

Scarab Sages

I've built a melee summoner in PFS who actually does really well. She was og (chained) but that was just so her mount eidolon could be lawful good. Here's what I did:

1) Wayang. Let me be small with no str penalty, so I could start with 16 str.
2) armor expert and heirloom weapon (lance) traits. This let me pick up mithral breastplate without penalty, and use a lance. Then masterwork transformation your lance and start enchanting.
3) I put skill ranks in handle animal, and took the feats mounted combat, ride by attack, spirited charge, wheeling charge, and indomitable mount. At level 11 I'll take power attack.
4) gave my Eidolon reach.
5) I only started with, like 13 chr. Just enough to cast a few spells. Both my lvl 4 and 8 ability increases went to chr.

This is how she looks at lvl 9. She's not a tank, more like a melee striker. Lots of hit-and-run tactics, but she gets the job done. She rarely gets attacked because, due to ride-by-attack, she hits and then is on the other side of the map.

Probably not very often since he's concentrating on mounted combat on top of his eidolon. Starting out with a 14 and working your way up to 16 is perfectly fine for the way he wants to go.
