Large Lance?

Rules Questions

A lance can be wielded one handed while mounted. An large weapon used in one hand can be wielded in two hands by a medium creature at a -2 penalty to hit (unless you got Effortless Lace). However a lance still counts as a two handed weapon. Can you do this in pfs? I know you can wield a large bastard sword as one of the iconics does it. Is there an official ruling (or presedence) somewhere that I haven't been able to find? Or can I expect table variance?

A bastard sword is a one handed weapon, Amiri does it because she took the exotic weapon proficiency which would make a bastard sword a one handed weapon for her. It's large size boosts the number of hands for her to two.

A lance is a two handed weapon which is one handed under special cirumstances. You can't wield a two-handed weapon that's sized for creatures larger than you are.

I agree, a lance is different from a bastard sword since it remains a two-handed weapon but has a special rule applying. If it's too large for you, you can't wield it at all, so you can't wield it in one hand.

I'd personally rule that you could use a large lance two-handed while mounted, but you wouldn't be able to use it at all while not mounted. Since you can use the entire upper half of your body to use it while riding.

This is one of those confusing legacy wording issues that comes up. It is much easier on you if you think of light, one-handed, two-handed weapons as light, medium, and heavy weapons. This separates weapon category from how many hands (or equivalent limbs) you need. Light weapons can only be used in one hand. Medium weapons use one hand, but are treated as heavy weapons if you use two hands. Heavy weapons require two hands. Increasing/decreasing weapon size changes the weapon weight category by one step. Lances would then be a special heavy weapon that requires only one hand while mounted, but is still a heavy weapon in all other ways. This is why you cant use a large lance, since medium creatures cannot wield a large heavy weapon.

One thing to note, a "medium" weapon wielded in two hands would not qualify as a "heavy" weapon. It would require both hands as well as subsuming your potential off-hand attack economy, but it wouldn't qualify as a "heavy" weapon for rules elements that require the use of a "heavy" weapon (eg. Overhand Chop, Pushing Assault, etc.). Other than that, it's a very good model to understand the situation more clearly. With that, we would get the following breakdowns:

Lance: Heavy weapon, can be wielded in one hand while mounted.
Quarterstaff Master: Can wield quarterstaves as Medium weapons.
Jotungrip: Can wield properly sized Heavy weapons as Medium weapons.
Bastard Sword: Medium weapon, must be wielded as Heavy martial weapon if you lack exotic proficiency.

Kazann,
I agree with thaX's ruling.

I'm honestly surprised this thread hasn't become the next "Succubus in a grapple."

Giants and their 'lances'. Far too big for most to 'wield one-handed'.

I'll see myself out now.

Thank you, Mark.

Let's look at this from another perspective...

Lance - Heavy weapon, can be wielded in one hand while mounted via Lance rules

Quarterstaff Master - can wield Quarterstaff (Heavy Weapon) one handed. Can still wield is as Double Weapon (is there particulars about this from the Archtype?)

Jotungrip - Can wield Heavy Weapons one handed.

Bastard Sword - Medium weapon that needs to be wielded as a Heavy weapon if lacking in Exotic Proficiency.

Now, keeping in mind that the terms (Light,Medium,Heavy) are ones that were made as a hypothetical, running a parallel with the Armor types. The overall designations of the weapons has not changed, just a clearer term to define it as we discuss this in this thread.

The major point is that the larger sized Lance, as well as any other Heavy (Two Handed) weapon that the character can somehow wield One Handed, can not be wielded by the smaller character.
