Wounded Wisp Comment (Some Spoilers)

Has anyone ever fallen in the pit in the Wisp's basement? Has anyone ever tried the Disable Device check? Or even bothered just walking slowly across it?

I like the idea, and the weight check is cool (not really something I'd expect), but it's a 10' wide gap encountered when there's no time pressure, since the fight takes place in the next room and there isn't a big need to move from there. Why bother moving at ¼ speed when you can just take 10 and jump it? Why bother with a DC 20 Disable Device (seriously, what's up with level 1 scenarios and absurd lock and trap DCs?), when again, as long as you haven't dumped Str you can jump it with no chance of failing?

It's neat set dressing, and gives the PCs something to heckle Heryn about with her lax workplace safety, but why bother making it an actual trap?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The intent on this, was to introduce the concept of traps to newer players. This is an introductory scenario for people who are new to PFS, so there's several masters it needs to serve.

In fact, in the game I just ran (with several veteran PFS players), they all walked across together and collapsed the bridge. It ended up doing some minor damage that turned the subsequent encounter into a brutal TPK.

So, I guess... YMMV?

I've also seen overly cautious players be convinced that they'll be ambushed as they recover the package and post a sentry by the stairs to keep watch. Seeing the character rush across the basement once he realized that the threat was not where he expected it to be was quite entertaining.

Yeah, I guess I hadn't considered new players to Pathfinder entirely.
