I want to make a melee Wizard

Advice

Say i'm 10th level

what and how do I magic jar, transform, or whatever my way into a suitable shape to do melee in?

I want the full suite of how to effectively do this. Like if I magic jar where do i put my body.

that's pretty good, but I think truly i'm looking for the steps to get this going, as opposed to a build.

like If i use transformation stuff, i transform into what.

If i try to magic jar something how and what can I make sure is readily available and sustainable.

or other options.

edit: read through most of Hama's items, I think i understand...

So rather thab AT level 10 you moreso mean 1-10?

20 pointbuy?

No, it's more like i've seen this form of casting brought up, but I've never learned how to do it effectively.

It looks like for magic jar, Spirit jars are necessary so that you can keep a body permanently...

It's something I'd be interested in running eventually or using against my players, and I don't need to make it optimized all to hell, I just need to know how to do it safely.

Magic Jar is how a normal wizard melees when he feels like it. Building a dedicated melee wizard lets you use the concept from level 1 onwards.

He can still use Magic Jar as a form of extra life option though.

[In full disclosure dedicating a wizard to melee is drastically reducing their overall power, but it's fun and if well played is effective enough.)

Then make a Magus...

Magus are their own thing.

not magic enough

- Human

- Dual Talent alt racial

- Get traits that increase your initiative and your fortitude saves

- Wizard

- Transmutation school

Stats:

S15+2 D14 C15 I15+2 W8 CH7

Progression:

1. Toughness

3. Improved Unarmed Strike

4. +1 STR

5. School Strike (Telekinetic Fist) + Arcane Discovery: Knowledge is Power

7. Power Attack

8. +1 CON

9. Improved Initiative

10. Multimorph

11. Great Fortitude

12. +1 INT

13. Lunge

15. Werewolf Shape

Use beast shape, monstrous physique early on; then elemental shape; then giant form and form of the dragon.

I recently made a backup character that was an Arcanist(Spell Specialist) 5/Dragon Disciple 6. Sure, normally you can't be an arcanist and go into DD because you still prepare spells, but with SPell SPecialist you get around that.

Between Bloodline Development and Dragon Disciple, you can be fairly tanky.

Magus are their own thing.

I'm sorry for thinking outside the box and about something that would take minimal effort and great enjoyment.

If I was level 10, and wanted to be a "melee wizard," I would multi class 1 fighter, 3 wizard, 2 fighter, and wizard from there on...

that seems like a good build.

thanks.

sorry the concept is more about transformation stuff and taking over peoples bodies or other magic to contend in melee. the concept is specifically about making a wizard who can melee.

like it's not about magic that lets you make attack rolls, it's magic that gives you new ways to make attack rolls.

Straight Wizard or 1 level of Fighter then into Eldritch knight are both viable. Don't forget the trait to recoup the 2 lost CL if going EK

mmm, but i don't really want to just swing a sword.

Who are you talking to about just swinging a sword?

Eldritch Knight doesn't use weapons really.

But I prefer straight Wizard to get the bonuses from leveling up the Transmutation School. Extra shape spells are neat but the scaling enhancement bonus is super good.
