Equipment for a Bolt Ace

Advice

Hi Board,

I'm starting a Jade Regent game, playing a Svirfneblin Bolt Ace 5/Weapon Master 4 riding a battle Dog and shooting a Minotaur Double Crossbow.

I have 49.000gp to spend to equip my gnome and I really don't know how to spend those gold.

I was thinking to custom enhance my crossbow with a permanent Gravity Bow effect and an Abundant Ammunition effect.

Out of this, what are the most useful gears for a crossbowman?

Thank you!

Belt of incredible dexterity, obviously - adds to attack, damage, AC, reflex, ride skill, initiative and probably a thing or two else of yours. Probably +4.

Cloak of resistance - your other saves are important too.

A headband which adds to wisdom which in turn adds to grit, perception and will saves. I like the headband of unshakeable resolve.

Armor of a kind which doesn't limit your dex bonus. Some for your mount too; they might want a belt of mighty constitution +2 as well.

A +1 ring of protection and +1 amulet of natural armor are good buys. You might prefer a lesser talisman or two to the amulet though.

Now, the less obvious. If you can afford it a goz mask makes fog no problem to you. A silver nocking point lessens the negative effects of wind on archery. gloves of dueling are probably too expensive for you yet but keep them in mind for later. A ring of sustenance is a good thing to have on hand if your GM likes night ambushes. Always keep a cure potion on hand to stabilise your mount if it goes down.

And the weapon itself? I'd want as high an enhancement bonus as possible first off before custom enchantments. DR is a pain. Edit: though you really can't afford that yet. Maybe the abundant ammunition at least on a +1 crossbow might be worthwhile.

Other than the Big Six, there are some items which could be of interest to you.

Cracked Opalescent White Pyramid Ioun Stone - 1,500
(lets you treat Minotaur Crossbow as a martial weapon, meaning you won't need to spend a feat for proficiency)

Cracked Pale Green Prism Ioun stone - 4,000
(+1 to attack)

Bolt Ace is specifically proficient in all crossbows, not just simple or martial ones. They do not need to spend a feat to use an exotic crossbow.

Bracers of falcon aim, cheap gives you a bonus to perception +the keen effect for your crossbow

@Saethori

Consider me educated.

I take it you haven't seen the errata?

They're now once per day, 1 minute duration and requires a standard action to activate.

Well then. They were certainly under priced before, but now they don't seem worth it at all.

OP, ask your GM if you can use the pre errata version. If he says yes, you're in, if not, pass on the item.

Yea that's a dumb errata

Hi Guys,

thank you for your suggestions.

Gloves of Dueling are a fantastic gear and I found space for them in my equipment.

Until now I purchased the Gloves, a Belt of Dex +2, an Headband of Wis +2, an Handy Haversack and mundane utility objects, enchanted to +1 my crossbow, armor for my mount, Cloak of Resistance +2, and I have more or less 16.000gp to spare.

Any other suggestion?

Hm, now I read the silver nocking point, it definitely looks good, although I think it works best for the earlier parts of the AP. Jade Regent has a lot of travelling, and some of it in pretty unpleasant environments - if your DM remembers the rules for environmental challenges, you can expect to deal with those penalties a fair bit. I think it was mostly in book 2 and 3, but there may be some later. Also, this item turns wind wall and its variants into just significant penalties, rather than an auto-lose for you.

Would it be cheap, knowing what you already know, to save for a bane (evil outsiders) or holy enchantment on your weapon?

you should really buy armor for yourself too if you haven't.

Probably Mithral Chain Shirt
Price: 1,100 gp.

4 Armor Bonus, Max Dex 6, No ACP, no movement speed penalty.

Then make it +1 for a cheap AC bonus.

I'm thinking about the Mithral Chain Shirt, but soon my Dex will reach +7 modifier and I'll end with a +8 modifier.

You can buy the Mithral Chain Shirt +1, then don't upgrade it while you save cash for Celestial Armor (Max 8 Dex, +3 Chainmail)

Or just start with a Darkleaf Cloth Studded Leather.
Price: 775 gp.

3 Armor Bonus, Max Dex 8, No ACP

Your character has a lot of statistics based off dexterity. The extra 12 000 gp for a +4 belt seems to me to be worthwhile.

Off-topic: Gear refers to all the equipment you are wearing or using, collectively. It's not a singular noun unless you qualify it as 'a piece of gear'. In D&D or Pathfinder the term 'item' is usually used for a single piece of gear.

Consider me educated, thank you.

On the belt, I'll try to have it +4, I still have money, but want to see if any other suggestion will came.

But for sure I'll buy at least one belt +2, so I deducted the cost from the starting amount.

I'll start to play on Saturday, so I still have time for decide my final equipment.
