Wall of Enervating Shadow

Homebrew and House Rules

Something I've been working on.
Level 6 or 7 Sorcerer/Wizard spell
10 ft square/level of deeper darkness (as the spell)
Has a strong fear affect
If one were to pass through it, and fail a save, lose 1d4+1 HD (as the spell Enervate)

Soo... no takers... huh...

What do you want us to take? Are you asking us to design a sample spell based on what you've given or are you just asking what we think about a spell that does those things?

If it's just initial thoughts, I think that power level could be okay, the Enervation effect notwithstanding if it was carefully done. It would depend on the duration of the spell and whether that effect kept stacking (normally it's instantaneous which means multiple Enervates would stack, but that still takes using up the spells.)

Your effect description of the wall needs to be incredibly precise on its dimensions, also whether it's Shapeable [S]. If you do make it Shapeable [S], then realize that theoretically a high level caster can snake and bend it back and forth across a room or corridor, thus forcing multiple saves against Enervate for any creature trying to pass with just one spell. While this could be done with wall of fire (in ring-form, making a creature pass through twice, once to get into the ring and again to pass the other side) or another damage-type wall, Enervate effect and a chance of failing just one Strong Fear save from multiple passes is way more harsh. That and say you could through a couple layers of the wall and then failed the Fear save, You'd be stuck in there cowering (Normally you might flee in terror, but since the wall is what's terrifying you, you obviously won't run toward/through that and so, forced to cower (or use teleport ability).

So take things into consideration. I'd probably not do Shapeable; keep it a plane, like wall of force. Maybe make it a 5-ft square section/level. So a 12th-level caster could do a 30-ft long, 10-foot high wall, or a 20-ft long, 15-ft high wall. That's just an option, it's your spell.

Frankly, you ought to drop th ennervation effect to a single level. Why? Because of the very real possibility of having to pass through multiple squares.

But hey, it's your game.

Thank you Pizza Lord and Weldrake! That is the exact kind of advice I was looking for.
I will take both of your suggestions.

The other day my Dm said "you do know that any spell you make my NPCs might get their hands on..." and frankly, meeting a Wall of Enervating Shadow (as I first made it) cast by BBEG on US... my party would kill me.

Just make as per wall of blindness/nausea etc so it cannot be formed on-top of creatures and has to be a flat plane.
