some people do not realize how cruelty actually works.
Thanks for stirring up so many negative emotions in so many truly wonderful people who did not make your fine lists.
Life sucks and then you die. It's best to not get hung up on the little things and instead get hung up on the big things, like why I have a sinus infection just before I have to DM Strange Aeons, or why it's not cold enough outside to be good pho or chili weather yet.

That is a fair point, so I should amend my list.
Anyone.
Just let me know ahead of time.
I really didn't mean to upset anyone, and I have a terrible time with remembering names. I would love to game with you.
That also goes for you, Triphoppenskip. :-)

it's just, I guess, that I read comments from a lot of poster here in these forums who suffer from depression, anxiety, other things that make interacting hard for them, and this kind of thread can really bring a person down, and it just doesn't feel like something Paizo would be condoning.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I don't mean to spoil your fun in any way.

I don't know you Terquem, not in the way I know some forum regulars. I know I'd be intrigued to have TOZ or Anzyr or Mega Missingno (she will get the joke) Ashiel or Bandw2 at my table, probably several others that aren't coming to mind as I type this on my phone.
I don't actually know a poster here I would reject from my game, though I would warn Steve Geddes (forgive a misspellingb phone) that he might not like it as I work hard to make steel every bit as potent as spell, but he'd be welcome too.

You didn't offend me at all, and I'm one of the ones who suffers from depression and anxiety. I may have left some folks off my list completely by accident, not by choice. There are so many great gamers on the forums that I couldn't remember every one that I'd like to play with. When I think of others I will add them to my list of people I'd like to play with. It is considerate of you to consider those who have these problems, though. Good on you.

I...just...uhm...wow. I don't understand. I mean, it's Not that I find your post insulting or anything, but I do find it surprising and perplexing. I actually thought your first post to be sarcasm.

Speaking for myself? There's a lot of really great opinions and comments and jokes that are made on these forums. Reading through these threads is one of the highlights of my day. There's lots of times where a thread is started that I'd like to comment on but don't because...it's just hard. A lot of people out here have already gotten over or never had any concern with posting their thoughts in front of strangers. That's great, it really is, but again, speaking for myself, that's a challenge. It gets even more ironic considering the social nature of my hobby of choice :)
I don't think the intent of this thread is to do any damage, and it is kind of fun. There's lots of folks on here I think would be a blast to game with. Shoot, as an aspiring GM, I'd be willing to run the game just for the constructive feedback I imagine I could get (aspiring GM and all).

I've considered it, but due to time constraints it's a future goal right now.
Edit: I've also only been playing for about a year, so I'd like to get a little more experience (and another reading of Painlord's guide) before throwing myself in that chair.

I remember the very first game I ever ran (back in 1986) playing AD&D 1e. It was painfully bad, but the players were encouraging and helpful when I screwed up. I've since gotten much better (I hope). So just go for it. You get better the more you do it.
I'm a little less old (but grongnard in spirit I've heard), I GMed my first game in 2001 just three weeks (or so) after the first time I played, no DM in 100 km around had that effect. Though, who needed to know the rules in Ad&d 2e anyway?.

While I certainly like pho in the Winter, I routinely have it during the Summer as well.
South Vietnam doesn't have 4 seasons, just wet and dry.
His point isn't a bad one. By making lists of people we DO want to play with, that necessarily means we are making an excluded list of people we DON'T want to play with. Does it mean we can't talk about our interests and who might share them or bring something specific that is interesting to a table? I don't think so. But it isn't a bad idea to recognize how this is a popularity contest and how that can affect some people.
When I was growing up, the hobby tended to be largely made up of people who had been excluded from other cliques. It pains me when I see people then try to turn the hobby cliquish and exclude others.
We don't need to debate this. Awareness of potential issues is all that's really required, no one needs to rewrite their lists or include those who haven't been yet. I think in general, the thread is fairly positive so far, mostly talking about why certain people seem intriguing. That's a good thing. Maybe other people will put a little effort into following their posts and get exposed to their ideas and also become intrigued.

For us it was:
P 1: "I want to grapple the orc!"
DM: "........."
P 2: "........."
P 3: "........"
DM: "Okay. Let's take out the tables in the PHB."
P 2: "Hey, buddy... You sure you don't wanna hit him with your sword instead?"
P 1: "No."
P 3: "... Pick your navel lint instead?"
P 1: "... Know what? I hit the orc with my sword instead."

For the record, I'd play a game with anyone. I think there some specific posters that I'd be interested in precisely how they run/do/approach things, but I welcome anyone and everyone at a lot of my tables.
I also run games at some cons, so playing with people I don't know well is something I'm used to.

Pretty sure I'd enjoy it.
I prefer games where magic trumps mundane, but I still like the alternatives.

Ironically a year back I commented on a post Terquem made a about some campaign setting work - and I would have loved to have been able to play in both examples he wrote up.
I don't really know or regularly communicate with posters here and when I do it's usually knocking heads due to wildly different play-styles, opinions on gaming philosophy and + RL politics - a trifecta!
That being said I would probably game at most any table that would have me or run a game for anyone who likes to play at least once because I really like gaming.
This is a niche hobby that is fractured by systems/editions and to a degree age/political views and system bias (usually your first system). Paizo.com seems to exaggerate the difference - the cliquish nature, the fighting over the most basic posts/comments seems - nutty.
In the rw when I come across gamers I tend to show a favorable bias towards - even if I don't like their particular game, game philosophy, etc - they are still gamers. Go figure.
I do feel that my particular play style leans more towards the old school + immersive lore so my list of posters on it would be colored by that fact.

Terquem, your point is fair. Please be aware that composing these lists actually involves a lot of worry on my part—I've been on the forums for, like, nine and a half f*!&ing years. I have spent almost as much time on on this earth being active on these forums as I have spent time not having heard of them at all. I know a lot of names on here, including yours, and it's really hard to think of everyone I like and might enjoy gaming with under pressure. And it's especially hard if they don't have a memorable avatar—it took me ages to stop confusing TOZ with this other person with a kinda Cayden-looking avatar, and about as long to establish a good running internal understanding for who thejeff is—and I see a lot of thejeff's posts on here. I'm really worried that I'm leaving out tons of people I like simply by failure of memory, and that doing so might result in hurt feelings.
So with that said, I'll add one final name to the roster:
You. You, there, reading this post, whoever you are. As long as you're a Paizonian person who appreciates smiles and respects the validity of others' feelings, you are welcome at my table. And as an autistic guy who's bad at remembering to smilee, the smiling thing can be waived.
And as a note, Terquem, by standing up in a crowded room and making a fair point that in a lot of more "tough guy" gamer communities would probably just get you unfairly mocked and disregarded, you've made it quite certain to me: You are a cool person who takes risks to stand up for people's feelings even when you're the only one in the thread doing it. You are most definitely welcome at my table.
Unless you try to play an assimar. Assimar players have a door and they'd better not let it hit them on the way out those f&~&ing a+!*!!&s.

Personally I don't think I've run across a single person on here I wouldn't want to play with. Sure I've seen people with playstyles that may not mesh with my preferred style but I've noticed in the past from gaming with people like that I tend to learn some new stuff that I do like and start incorporating into my game. As for people who have different political/religious beliefs or just a different outlook on life in general than I do my regular group is pretty wide ranging as far as that goes. When we get together to game we aren't focused on any of that stuff, we're there to roll dice and have fun trying to save the world. So if any one on here ever ends up stuck in the Fort Smith Ar. area give me a yell, we'll be happy to have ya.

Something else to keep in mind is that even though people may not intend to come off as 'cliquish' there's always going to be some degree of recognition among certain groups of posters depending on the section of the forums you're on. Most of the folks posting and/or listed here are people who seem fairly active in Gamer Talk/Off-Topic/General Chat subsections so there's going to be more recognition among those particular posters. If you were to post a similar thread over in the PbP section you might see a few of the same names but I almost guarantee you that the majority of names would be completely different. Nothing wrong with that :)
However, I'll agree with and say cheers to the general sentiment most people have posted - I can't really think of anyone on the forums that I wouldn't be game for gaming with :)
Nicos |
If anyone has a PFS scenario they'd like to request from me, I am looking to test my skills at PbP.
I was jsut about to start GMing PFS in PBP, but alas I can use my credit card to buy things here in Paizo. I only played (for not PFS) temple of empyreal enlightement and was very interesting.

I can.
Not going to rattle off names (especially since it's just as much if not more my fault than theirs), but between personalities clashing and wildly divergent ideas about what makes the game fun to play, there are most definitely some people on these boards who would be happier at a table other than the one I'm sitting at.
And that's perfectly fine.
Nicos |
I'll admit that after 30 years I've developed my own playstyle and am pretty hardwired into it, but I'd love to game with others to get fresh ideas. They might pick up one or two from me, as well. It'd all be good.
*drifts off into Utopian daydream*
I actually was tempted to invite you to a pbp game before Jiggy's, but alas it seems that it was hard for you and I don't think I could do better than him at gming.
Inviting you to gm in pbp seems also not an option since you were looking to be a player.
