Tips and Tricks for running an Online Campaign in our threads?

Online Campaigns General Discussion

So I know that there are a bunch of running campaigns going in that section of the boards, and am interested in it as a medium for my group's game.

The basic mechanics of using the boards for a game I understand well enough(I think), such as creating Aliases for characters, spoilers for hidden stuff, OOC chat in grey. Rolling... actually that one confuses me. How can you roll, and in the same post know what you rolled and be able to act accordingly in character?

Anyway, what are some of the more esoteric tricks people have used to milk extra enjoyment out of that play-by-post medium?

Tips for GM's as well as Players are welcome.

Rolling is just a command. Look down, I substitute brackets with parentheses.

(dice=Attack Roll)1d20 + 7(/dice)

Now to see it with brackets...

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Edit: If you don't want to roll where the players can see...

And to know what the roll is before completely posting, you can hit "Preview". Note that that roll is tied to whatever the next post you make is, regardless of whether you lose your progress and have to re-post or something.

There are some really good guides in Guide to Guides. Worth checking out, just need to scroll down a bit to find it.

{dice=Dice Roll}1d6+1{/dice}
Dice Roll: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Kinda busy, so I'll give a more comprehensive answer momentarily.

EDIT: Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 20 Magehunter, Sundakan, please stop cheating. I clearly won Initiative. No ninja-ing!

Inquisitor. Taking into account WIS bonus, DEX bonus, Improved Initiative, and the reactionary trait...

Initiative: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25

I hunt Mages for a profession. You think I haven't invested in Initiative?! My initiative is so high I ninja'd you by twenty minutes.
