Can we get forum notifications?

When a post is favorited, quoted, maybe our names used in @ notation similar to twitter, deleted by moderator action, and so on, it'd be helpful to know about. I know there have been quite a few times that someone has responded to me, but it was on another subforum that I don't frequent as often, or a thread fell off a page, et al actions only to find out maybe months down the road when the conversation has long gone stale.

I think either using the mail system that's already on the boards would be great, or even have a pop up notification (not a new window, but an in-browser pop up), or something similar. If not notifications ala "User abc responded to your post" then maybe some central location to more easily track threads we've participated in that have since been posted to? As is, the forums are kind of like whack-a-mole.

Have you used the Focus option which lists only the threads you've posted in and threads with new responses since the last time you opened them? It's at the top right of the Messageboards page, next to the Search box.

Using it to filter out threads I haven't opened lets me see threads whose latest post goes all the way back to August 15. It's the best way to see if you've missed any conversations you were part of.

That doesn't do what Buri is asking for. Buri asked for a way to get a notification when

The focus feature only tracks which threads have new posts: it doesn't allow you to see if you have been quoted.

Again, the OP is asking for notifications for something that the Focus feature doesn't help with. If your username is both an unusual word and contains no special characters, you might be able to see see if you have been mentioned using the forum search and sorting by "newest first." However, if your username is composed of common words, or has a format that the rudimentary forum search engine can't deal with properly, then it won't work.

Once again, the Focus feature doesn't help you figure out if one of your posts has been deleted. It might alert you to the fact that a moderator posted in a thread that you had posted in (if the moderator is the most recent person to have posted in that thread when you look), but it can still be difficult to figure out if you made one of the posts that was deleted. A notification system would make it much easier to tell if you have a deleted post.

Don't get me wrong, Joana, Focus is a nice feature. It's just a non-sequitur: the OP asked for a feature that does X, Y, and Z, and you responded by pointing out a feature that does Q.

I'll also request a way to be notified by e-mail if I get a PM. Going a bit further, most forums allow you to "subscribe" to a thread such that you get e-mails when someone posts in that thread. I think it would be a good feature to have, so that, if, say, someone bumps a three-year-old thread in the homebrew forum and asks about the OP's work, the OP can be notified that their thread is once again active.

I don't need to be notified every time Tacticslion favorites a post I make, I just assume he'll find it eventually.

I was responding to the last point of the OP's post:

That's precisely what the Focus feature does, and it already exists on the site.

When this subject has come previously, Vic has said Paizo doesn't do email notifications because if they generate too much of that type of email, ISPs will start treating them like spam.

I'm too lazy and apathetic to find an old post to link.

Skeld, that's why I suggested using the built in notifications already on the site. ;)

Yes. I was responding to 137ben's request for email notifications. I should've quoted him, but I'm lazy.
