Interest check: Icons get now satisfaction... (Iconic AP)

Hi there,

I sometimes have strange ideas. This might be one of them (you're warned!)

I was wondering if people would be interested in playing an AP as an icon, using the pre-generated characters from our favorite game, starting of course at level 1.

The "how?" , the "who?", the "why?" and the "which AP?" can wait.

Dark Archive

I'll buy in.

I'm interested. Not sure which, but I'm down!

I've a soft spot for Harsk, but his build is sooo terrible. :(

Dark Archive

What are some of the good iconic builds?

They're all pretty all right, except for Harsk, who got caught out in the rain with a Heavy Crossbow and no Crossbow Mastery.

The wizard has a big int score and wizardly feats, so that's fine.

The Druid has all the good druid feats, even if the stat distribution is strange.

The Paladin is good, and the monk actually isn't so bad, relatively speaking. That temple sword thing works out pretty well.

Most of the rest are at the very least playable, although I'd personally avoid the fighter, sadly. TWF just doesn't work out very well like that - the slayer does it leagues better. Speaking of, that slayer comes together really well.

I'd say the 'best' ones are the Wizard, The Paladin, and the Slayer. But most of them are decent enough.

I've always wanted to play RotRL with Ameiko and Shalelu as PCs. This is a bit different.

Dark Archive

This is actually a pretty cool idea! I think there is a party who already does this (not sure if in PBP or just as a report) but they go one step further: Each AP they play with the same iconic characters that the AP shows in their art... for example Serpent's Skull would bring the cleric, the fighter, the rogue, and the wizard, while Giantslayer would bring the barbarian, the inquisitor, the ranger, and the wizard.

Perhaps could also be nice to let the players change a couple things from each of the icons, like feats, stats, or skills for an example (picking only one thing to change).

Dark Archive

I guess iconic sorcerer. I like sorcerers.

You might be thinking about the Order of the Amber Die - just read about their start to Strange Aeons on the Paizo blog. If that's who you are thinking of, they actually go so far as doing it in marathon face-to-face sessions where they get through an entire adventure in one long weekend. Sounds incredible!

That is what actually got me interested in something like this, so it was great to see this thread posted. Depending on which AP, I might be up for it. Already playing in several PbP, but it's a lot of fun, so I could fit in another.

Plus with the Order of the Amber Die group, they even do 15 point buy and build the characters more based on the iconics' backgrounds than optimization. Basing character choices around their story always seemed more fun and interesting than fully optimized, but everybody has their own style.

Cool idea! Id be down for this...

True enough. Regardless of if we build them themselves, or use at least the starting builds at level 1 given in the community resources of PFS, this game wouldn't really lend itself to optimization anyway.

In a way, that's a bit of a relief.

I'll express interest depending on the AP. I'm currently playing a PBP Kingmaker, as well as Face to Face, so if people want to do that AP I'll likely bow out.

I think it would be very interesting to play as one of the iconics. The real question is which one...

I'd have to level down, but Seoni is ready to sorcererize!

I'd be interested, but not if everyone's going to cherry pick the best iconics statistically, I just don't have the energy for that.

Well never mind I guess. I'll be......................................................................... .................................. Iconic Barbarian?

Using the pre-gens or doing the Amber Die style? Been wanting to play an Eschie game.

Interest Check

Dark Archive

Probably depends on the AP, but I'd be interested. Presume we'd be looking at the PFS pre-gens, or would it be another source. IIRC the AP ones varied in stats a bit from path to path (Do they even still have those?)

Glad to see I picked your interest!

Concerning the Icons, I'd like to use the pre-generated characters as they appear on the first adventure of the Ap. Then, as they gain levels, the players will be free to work on the build.

As for the AP I could GM:
Most interested:
Rise of the Runelord (anniversary edition)
Curse of the Crimson Throne
Serpent Skull
Mummy's Mask

Not my first choice, sowwy
Jade Regent
Carrion Crown
Reign of Winter
Giantslayer

Not interested
Legacy of Fire
Iron Gods
Wrath of the righteous

Either with the Icons in the AP, or others (or even a mix, the 4 Icons+ 2 "wild cards" Icons for 6 players mayhem-Good idea, Lil"Eschie!)

Feedback?

Consider this a dot, but also I'll give you my opinion... I have a soft spot for classical things.

And there wouldn't be anything more Classic than Rise of the Runelords played with Iconics.

That said... I call dibs on melee frontliner! Specially if it is Amiri, she is a damn sexy barbarian.

Before anything I'd say that you should run what you want most, so lets limit our opinions and interest checks on your "Most Interested" list. If you'd like to bring the four 'basic' Iconic of each AP (which I fully approve), this will lead us to this:

Rise of the Runelord: Kyra (cleric), Merisiel (rogue), Seoni (sorcerer), and Valeros (fighter)

Curse of the Crimson Throne: Ezren (wizard), Harsk (ranger), Lem (bard), and Seelah (paladin)

Serpent Skull: Ezren (wizard), Kyra (cleric), Merisiel (rogue), and Valeros (fighter)

Mummy's Mask: Alahazra (oracle), Balazar (summoner), Kyra (cleric), and Seelah (paladin)

In bold is what I'd be interested... which is only Curse of the Crimson Throne and Harsk! If you go with this AP, I'd even suggest for the new version that will come up soon.

Yeah, I wanna buy this book! If they do a reboot "Second Darkness" I'd be interested too! *wink wink nudge nudge at Paizo*

Dark Archive

Runelords seems appropriate, in which case I'd happily play Kyra (or any of them really).

Would we be expected to play them to type or just use their stats/backstory? (I'm not familiar with most of the iconics beyond the 'Meet the Iconics' bits, but I've read through a few of the comics with the original iconics

I'd love to do Curse of the Crimson Throne. Ironically, Kyra would be my first pick, but from those four, probably Seelah. I quite like Seelah.

For those who might not already know, you can find the "meet the iconics" articles here

@Spinningdie: I exepect people to use their basic stats and backstory (Lem's being from Cheliax, Seoni being deep into tatoos, Valeros worshippin Cayden and so on..)

I should check, but as I remember, there were stats for the Iconics (some of them, at least), in NPC codex

DM Lil" Eschie wrote:

FWIW, I'd be interested in any of these:

Curse of the Crimson Throne
Serpent Skull
Mummy's Mask

Not so much Rise of the Runelords (although probably in the minority there).

I would be fine with either the AP-selected iconics or pick any iconics (or combination for more than 4). Some of the later iconics could be really fitting for the earlier APs. Aric/Red Raven would be particularly fun with Curse of the Crimson Throne! Or relic-hunting Mavaro the Occultist would seem a good fit for Mummy's Mask. Etc.

Although I tend to gravitate towards arcane casters and dex-based melee types (as well as the more unusual & weird, the better), I'm actually open to playing any iconic. It would be fun to do something outside my usual style. (Although I just picked Mavaro and Mummy's Mask as an example, but the more I think about it, that sounds fun! But bottom line, I'm open to really anything.)

I'd be up both for Crimson Throne and Runelords, either Lem or Merisiel (for some lovey dovey with Kyra ;)

Are we talking all of the iconics, including the later ones like the gunslinger, the occult ones, etc?

I own and have run Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition, so feel free to consider that. APs ranked in the order I would be interested in them:

Curse of the Crimson Throne: Ezren (wizard), Harsk (ranger), Lem (bard), and Seelah (paladin)

Rise of the Runelord: Kyra (cleric), Merisiel (rogue), Seoni (sorcerer), and Valeros (fighter)

Mummy's Mask: Alahazra (oracle), Balazar (summoner), Kyra (cleric), and Seelah (paladin)

Serpent Skull: Ezren (wizard), Kyra (cleric), Merisiel (rogue), and Valeros (fighter)

I would play any of the iconics available.

Iconics & AP count:
Kyra - 3
Merisiel - 2
Seoni - 1
Valero - 2
Seelah - 2
Ezren - 2
Harsk - 1
Lem - 1
Alahazra - 1
Balazar - 1

If you want to use the iconics as presented in the first book of the AP, but want to add another 2 wild cards to get up to 6, you could pull two others from one of the other APs. Say, if we did Rise of the Runelords, you could pull two characters from Curse of the Crimson Throne, and vice versa. For Mummy's Mask, you could pull from Serpent's Skull, and vice versa. Keeps everything at least on the same continent (and a bit closer to home). Kyra seems to be a choice almost no matter which AP you chose.

Regardless, it will at least be easy to choose a profile picture for the avatar (for once).

just checked quickly, there are some differences between the Iconics stats from the first APs and the NPC Codex. I think this last book (Codex) will be the one used for reference.

Players will have to choose the favored class bonus, and the traits.

I might give three traits ( one campaign, two to choose) to allow more flexibility.

Hrm. Can the statblocks from the Codex be found online somewhere? I only have the stats from here.

Also, in lieu of the usual submitted background and statblock, how will you be selecting players for this?

Indeed...and then how to decide who plays what? ;)

I was curious about whether the NPC Codex stat blocks were available online, as well.

Something that occurred to me: would you rebuild Merisiel and Balazar using the unchained versions of their classes?

Dark Archive

I'm pretty sure the stats were slightly different in each adventure path anyway... unless I'm just thinking of the card game now?

There appear to be some here, but not all the more recent ones.

Alternatively there's a package of the PFS ones available somewhere (it's in my download list anyway).

Also, I suppose either first come first server or dice among the entrants. Unless we can arrange two tables.

Probably easiest to dice for first choice as to character, unless a gentlemans agreement can be reached.

List of Players/Interest in order from first to post (for reference)

NenkotaMoon
Burnscar (Curse of the Crimson Throne)
The Dread Pirate Hurley
Sir Longears (Curse of the Crimson Throne)
Ken Marable (Not Runelords)
Spazmodeus
Phntm888 (CotCT/RotR/MM/SS)
4th Level Seoni
GypsyMischief
Spinningdice
EmissaryOfTheNorth (Runelords)
Nekroskop (Crimson Throne/Runelords)

The package thing is in my last post, the link.

Maybe it's just me, but the tought of an All Amiri/valeros/Harsk/Whoever Party did amuse me a lot.

Party of Lems

"Hi, I'm Lem. This is my brother, Rem, and my other brother, Kem. And that's our sister, Jem."

It was there, I had to.

spinningdice wrote:

I could totally get behind that, with so many Jack of All Trades we could claim Poker.

Maybe even Royal Flush.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Even if the idea of a party of Lem (the Lemmmings, maybe?) gave me a good chuckle, I would prefer different Iconics.

I think I should work like that:
-Find the Iconics stats (from the Codex for the Core classes and the other AP for the more recent) and put them in an available document for everyone to check

-Find which AP I would play (and so who will be the four Iconics)

-Everyone who would like to play would have to choose one of the AP Icon and a spoilered "Wild card" Icon.

I enjoy more roleplaying than fights, and sometimes I like to add sidequests to my players (perhaps too much of them sometimes), and to adapt the storyline to the crew of characters.
For those who aren't familiar with my way of GMing, read some of my work:
Lil"Eschie Crypt of the Everflame

I'm currently GMing the second part of the adventure (Mask of the Living god), a Second Darkness Campaign, and two groups in the Emerald Spire (one Good, one Evil characters group)

Great, I am really looking forward to this, either as participant or as observer ;).
As this would be my first PbP, actually just using the iconics would probably make it a ton easier for me. Just from checking your example, do you look for multiple Posts per day at a specific time? Or is it up to us how much time we invest?
For the avilability of stats, I see no reason not to use the PFS Pregens burnscar linked.

Sovereign Court

I would be interested in this :-)

I'd love to play this. It's a different angle using the iconics. I'd be most interested in Rise of the Runelords or Mummies Mask. That is if you'd want to put up with me in more than one game. :)

As for favoured APs all of those you listed as your first choice are perfectly ok with me.

I think I'll work on the idea, as many people seem interested.
It probably won't start before October, anyway.

As a side note, listening to Iron Maiden this morning, I was thinking that many AP could use heavy metal music as a musical theme

Second Darkness: Fear of the Dark (Iron Maiden)

Carrion Crown: Number of the beast (Iron Maiden)

Skulls and shackles: The rime of the ancient mariner (Iron Maiden)

Iron Gods: Brave new world (Iron Maiden)

Strange aeons: Can I play with madness? (Iron maiden) or Call of Cthulhu (Metallica)

Reign of Winter: Mother Russia (Iron Maiden)/ Trapped under ice (Metallica)

Legacy of Fire Burning ambition (Iron Maiden)

Hell's Vengeance Children of the Damned (Iron Maiden)

Hell's Rebel: the evil that men do (Iron Maiden)

Mummy's mask: "powerslave" (Iron Maiden)

And so on..^^

Are you going with using the Iconics that come with the AP?

If not I'd would like either the Investigator or the Brawler as my Iconic.

As I said earlier-but I'm just thinking about it for now, nothing is set in stone-I will probably use the four iconics from whatever AP we will be playing, and 2 "wild card" Iconics (iconics from other AP), for a 6-pack

OK. I'd go with the Rogue Iconic in that case.

I don't think any of the ACG Iconics have been used in an AP yet?

Still interested. Did I miss something?

You missed nothing. I know now that people would be interested.
I'm still thinking about which AP to play, how to put the reference material (Iconics sheet) easily to use, and how to select the team

I think I'll try a Rise Of the Runelord AP (anniversary edition), so the Iconics will be Valeros, Seoni, Kyra and Merisiel. Plus two "wild cards" for a 6 players team.

As I'm quite overworked right now,the game will start probably in January 2017, with recruitement in mid December.

Stay tuned (not "stay tuna")
