New spells slots when you level up

Rules Questions

I got a quick question, and I was wondering if anyone knows. If you are say a wizard and you level up in the middle of the day, do you get the new spell slots right away? In which case you can just rest for 15 minutes to prepare the new spells, as if you had left the slot empty? Or do you have to do a full 8 hour rest like normal before you can use those new slots?

And if you are a spontaneous caster like sorcerer, you just get the extra spells right away?

that's all gm fiat. my dm's don't let us level till we rest for a night. ask your dm.

As vhok said. That is up to the DM, and in my experience the majority goes with adding them after a night's rest.

I usually allow spontaneous casters to use their new spells but not their new slots. Prepared casters need a rest and preparation period before they get their slots.

I don't generally have people level up in real time with the glowy effects they have in World of Warcraft.

I generally have level ups occur between adventures.

Or at least during sleep. One important function of sleep in the real world is converting short-term memory to long-term memory. That's the real-world equivalent of leveling up.

If I allow level up half way through the day (which I occasionally do,if the circumstances are right) then casters do not get access to new spellslots until after they rest overnight. A minor benefit for non-casters.
