Christen had said this week and I kind of expected it yesterday or today, so my only answer is "any time now". The class is all finished, but with GenCon going on everybody is obviously busy with a lot of different industry stuff and general con-going so it may be layout, poor internet quality, or just a lack of time to get the playtest docs sent out that's holding things up at the moment. I'll pop Christen a message and see if he's got an updated ETA, but you'll have to be patient with us since GenCon is every RPG designer's busiest time of year. Free time is sparing and the wi-fi is strained to the breaking point!

Speaking of, if you've been following the Kickstarter you may have seen Christen's minigame built into the updates where he's unlocking new additional content based on people solving his puzzles and participating in events. There's one going on on Facebook right now where a GenCon attendee has solved the puzzle but to claim the reward he needs to gather enough psychic power...

I don't know how I keep forgetting GenCon is on right now! Thanks for the quick response...in other Akashic news, any word on Akashic Mysteries updates/errata?

The nexus will include some expanded rules clarifications for things like weapon-like veils, interactions with the Disguise skill, and one or two other ease of use updates. I've sent these on to DSP as well.

I believe that they're experimenting with some new tags and stuff over in the playtest for the akashic/martial initiator hybrid the rajah, but it looks like those still have a ways to go before they'll be implementable.
I also sent a log of some layout errors over to Jeremy a while back, but I don't really have any information on when/if those will get addressed.

A wisdom based vizier archetype?

Noted. Also, if you're looking for a Wisdom based akashic "full caster" equivalent, I would strongly suggest watching the City of Seven Seraphs Kickstarter updates over the next few days. The feedback and demand for the akashic materials included in the book has been great enough that Christen and I have put together a couple additional surprises that we'll be unveiling in the very near future. We've already hinted at what's coming a bit in the product discussion thread.

Just to let everyone know, City of Seven Seraphs is officially funded and into stretch goals, so that means the book will be published and it will include-
1) Updated and expanded rules for veilweaving and akashic magic.
2)Three new akashic classes: The nexus, a planar knight that can take on the abilities and powers of various outsiders, the radiant, an akashic healer that can invest essence directly into her allies to strengthen them and draw the essence back out to remove negative status conditions, and the eclipse, a shadowy veilweaver who combines dark magic with high skill facility and assassination techniques.
3) Over 100 new veils!
4) New vizier mystic attunements, new guru philosophies, and new daevic passions.

And maybe a few things more that we're waiting until final funding to lock in.

Something like a collectivist crossed with a rajah or a guru that could sorta be a qedeshot or similar concept.

I saw the 'Shadewalker/Eclipse' listing in the full race/class reveal and was a bit confused by the name change. Now I find out that this Shadowcaster/Lurk inspired class will be a veilweaver, and I am positively vibrating with excitement!

I have a suspicion you'll enjoy the new akashic "trinity" of classes. I've had a lot of experience in the time since writing Akashic Mysteries, with books like The Luchador, Vigilantes of Skybourne, and Spheres of Might, and I feel like that experience is going to translate into some awesome new options. I've always liked having moving parts to play with, and I think that to a certain extent that made akasha very much an "expert" system where you needed a strong degree of system mastery to ring the most out of it. I think the Nexus is going to serve as a really great point of entry that's going to open the system to a lot more players by virtue of having a more intuitive flow and structure that anyone can just kind of follow into the class. I actually had a fairly new player put together a Nexus in 20 minutes the other day, which was doubly awesome because even I usually take at least 30 minutes building any Pathfinder character. But they knew they wanted to play a tiefling with devil powers and were able to follow the class right through to make that happen.

I also tried some new things with the eclipse that I think are really cool, like a darkness companion that you can either wear as armor if you want to be more of an up-front combatant or that you can send around the battlefield to allow you to manifest attacks and veil powers from unexpected locations.
The radiant is a class whose mechanics I've been developing for a long time and which gets some of the cooler veils I've ever put together; last night I ran a high level playtest game where the party radiant was an elven princess riding a half-celestial winged unicorn who traveled about flanked by a pair of treants wielding Spears of Light through her Shared Veil feat. It was actually a ridiculously awesome game in general; everyone was 17th level, we were running the Witchwar Legacy, and the party consisted of the aforementioned radiant, an oni-spawn tiefling nexus using the Abyssal veils and convergences with a splash of the Hells/devil veils and convergences (so he could dual-wield a soul-trapping pitchfork and a balor's flaming whip), a suli nexus with the Genie veils and convergences (and I think a splash of the Underworld convergences), and a fetchling eclipse who rode around on her shadow dragon veil companion while blasting enemies with cold and negative energy or garroting them with razor wire made of pure darkness. So, good times.

I know this kind of thing is not as realistic as others - but personally with this new info, the Akashic Mysteries, and other akashic stuff being around - I'd love to see it all brought together, organized and made one book (like Ultimate Psionics).

I'd love to see that for the PoW stuff two. I like my big rules hardcovers on my shelf. :)

So.. So, I'm building a hybrid class that takes elements from Aegis, Soulblade and general veilweaving. The theme is pure akashic (with the aegis' armor and the blade being specific special veils). My request for help - a good name for the Astral Suit and the Mind Blade that feel Akashic instead of Psionic.

Mechanically I looked at what a character would look like with 3 levels each in Aegis, Soulblade then 10 levels in Metaforge, then topping with 4 levels in Vizier. Then I mixed matched, added a few minor unique mechanics and put it in a blender.

Are you thinking more of a name for the suit and weapon like "Akashic Armaments", or a name for the individual wearing them, like "Lifeforge"?

Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

The suit and weapon.

I was either using Soulforge or Lifeforge for the class.

I was actually trying to avoid using "Akashic" in the suit and blade names... mostly as it is used in other places, and it was getting pretty overused (akashic suit, skashic blade every other sentence. :) )

lol.

I'm just doing fanwork. When I get it done, I may post it on google docs or something. The whole concept came from two things -
When I got Ultimate Psionics, I loved the idea of half Aegis/Half MindBlade - someone who just creates out of thin air the stuff they need.

When Akashic Mysteries came out, I really like the flavor, and with all the veils being "create out of thin air" - the blended Aegis/Knife fit really well thematically, so I rebalanced it and added some Veilweaving.

To be honest, I only play Pathfinder solo with my wife GMing me - and we play through modules, so we make powerful characters so I can solo them. I'm not sure what solid balance would be for a normal Pathfinder class - so I am a little leery about sharing it, as I don't know how useful it would be for a normal group - I tried to keep it roughly balanced, but I figure it would be a powerful class.

TIL, I actually had to try really hard not to use the word "soul" in Akashic Mysteries due to making sure we were clear on the copyright front from certain other 3.5 materials with similar mechanics. It's surprisingly limiting, and also why essence/akasha is "life" magic. It's been really fun in City of Seven Seraphs to get to expand the concept a bit with planar energy and new things to mix into your essence to expand what it does and how it acts.

ooooh! Good point. I was going off the word "Soulknife" as it part of the inspiration for the idea. This will likely never be published but I will make that change. Since I read Akashic Mysteries, I have not even thought of "that other book"

"That other book" is still an excellent source for synonyms of "blue".

I mostly think of Incarnum because of the Totemist soulmelds. I like monster-related stuff.

there was a whole pathfinder updatw for incarnum over endworld... it had a necrocarnate base class, plus a neutral version of the incarnate and another base class that used elemental melds... i think it was called nexus LOL EDIT: no, it is called the foundationist... give it a check, it has some archetypes and ultimate campaign support which could be used with AM

Will this invalidate viridian dreams? or is that still in the works? Are there any plans for a veil-less, essence using class?

Yes, Veridean Dreams is not to be but a lot of it will live on. The vedist has been reworked into the radiant and there are going to be significantly more materials than I could have done otherwise. While I don't currently have a venue for a completely veil-less essence user, that doesn't mean that it can't/won't happen. I've got some fantastic relationships with a number of publishers, and with City of Seven Seraphs offering a new and expansive home for veilweavers, it wouldn't be surprising if Christen and I collaborate on some more Akashic projects in the near future.

I thought as much... I'm going to call the Radiant Vedist anyway.

So, I suppose we will see another bad BAB class with powerful veil weaving, a medium BAB with good veil weaving, and a full BAB with modest veil weaving. And I bet each will have two good saves, am I correct?

Oh, and to continue the middle-east theme, will the Nexus have asura, div, genie and manasaputra ties?

There's actually two mid-BAB and one 1/2 BAB this time around. The Nexus (mid-BAB) has some really fun toys including a warlock-blast type ability that can be channeled through its weapon-like veils and a bunch of planar-themed abilities that allow it to emulate various outsiders like genies, devils, angels, and psychopomps, the Eclipse (mid-BAB) is a darkness-themed class with good skills and some cool damage and debuff options, and the Radiant (low BAB) is a healer buffer that can invest essence directly into allies and has a bunch of fun minionmancy and control veils as well.

All of the veils are designed with the original classes in mind and support them as well, so there's massive expansion for the daevic, guru, and vizier included. There's also a bunch of new races, several of which are either Akashic base or have akashic alternate racial traits, so there's a lot going on there as well.

I'm just happy to see multiple persons expanding on the info. (At least I don't think Ssalarn wrote the Rajah)... either way there's MUCH more to come from Co7S and Dreamscarred just put out Rajah which is a pretty cool Veilshaper tied into PoW.

My point is we've got options coming from multiple directions... and that makes me quite happy.

I'm also happy because until recently I thought I was one of only a handful of people who found the Akashic stuff cool, but things like the Co7S kickstarter and Dreamscarred's continued support give me encouragement that people are giving this a chance.

Thanks Ssalarn for your part in a flexible but reasonable system IMO.

The comments about The Nexus make me want to see it all the more on account of my project that started as a more Akashic take on the sha'ir that has since evolved into an entire alternate take on geniekind as a whole and what might best work as the underpinning of an entire quasi-Persian/Arabesque setting.

I literally wrote it in such a way that I could keep doing supporting materials until I'd covered every outsider and exotic creature type in Pathfinder :P

Backers of the Kickstarter should already have the 1.2 alpha version (which is actually closer to a beta version short an editing pass), and I think that Christen might be releasing it in a stand-alone .pdf at some point? Can't swear to that at the moment though.

It's not in notated format, but here's the most current version of the updated akasha rules. It's mostly just clarifying additions and doesn't include any materials beyond the base system mechanics.

Thanks! By the way, how do feats interact with temporary essence? If I invest bonus essence, then it dissapears, could I invest normal essence later? I always houserules that incarnum feats could be invested as mant tumes as you want in a day, bu only upwards, so if you changed your mind and wanted more essence for a specific save, you could (and then any extra point would also be set)

Scarab Sages

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Yeah, you can always invest more essence into a receptacle as long as you don't exceed your maximum capacity, but anything that requires you to bind essence can't have essence taken out unless the essence expires or is removed by an outside force, such as temporary essence reaching its time limit or essence burn from an outside force reducing your essence pool by enough to impact your bound essence.

It's always nice to know that something I wrote is being enjoyed at someone's table (especially since I tend to really like writing weird or unusual stuff). If you happened to back the Co7S Kickstarter (I seem to recall you mentioning that you did?), you'll have to let me know what you think once the Eclipse and Radiant materials start going out to backers. Over the last couple years I've gotten a lot of feedback in threads like this and elsewhere about what people want from AM expansions, and I got to address a lot of those requests in Co7S. As a bonus, it's looking like some really talented designers are catching "akashic fever" and looking to add even more support to the system, which has me pretty excited to see what they come up with.

Yeah, I definitely noticed and appreciated with the Nexus veils that there's a lot of weapon-like veils, which looks like fun. A Dominion (Benevolence) or Wrath (Justice) Daevic with Aberrant Form for Sword of Justice seems like a flavorful concept, for example. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing new passions for this too, though, since there's now lots of good-aligned (and evil-aligned!) veils that would be fun to have together...and also menacing deathly ones. Shinigami-style daevic...though, Nexus is probably good for this too. Though it feels like it would have been easier for you to create a new kind of descriptor or something than have to say every time you can use your veilweaver level in place of your BAB for a lot of them.

Though have to admit, was slightly sad Mask of the Succubus wasn't a daevic veil to go with Bangles of the Jealous Seductress, Essence of the Succubus, Heartsblood Caress, and Lover’s Tread for a passion daevic. Ah, well, there's always Shape Veil.

(Also whoever did the Vrock on! joke should be ashamed of themself.)

Honestly, descriptors are double-edged swords that can create as many problems as they solve, so I try to avoid creating too many new ones unless it's a necessity. Also, I have some things I'd like to do where I'd really prefer to leave the door open for weapon-like veils that don't let you use veilweaver level in place of BAB.

The big thing there is that classes generally don't get veils on their list that don't match up with a slot they have. I think there's like 1 veil that doesn't match that paradigm and it's kind of a mistake that it's too late to rectify. As you note though, daevics can add veils with Shape Veil and other options, so it's still there, and who knows? Maybe there will be a daevic passion that adds a Head slot for them and brings those all together...

I wrote akashic content for the first Bloodforge, Lords of the Night, Akashic Mysteries (obviously), and City of Seven Seraphs. I also remember helping Jacob with some akashic stuff for Steelforge, but I'm not sure if that got published or not. I sold the Arcforge stuff that had a lot of akashic options in it to TPK Games, but I don't think that's been published yet?

That's everything I've been involved with.

Oh, I definitely will. Can't wait to see the Co7S stuff. The Nexus sneak peek was amazing :)

To be honest, I was never a fan of the Incarnum stuff from 3.5. Hence, I didn't pay a lot of attention to AM too much, assuming these things were related. I've purchased a TON of DSP stuff though, and know Jeremy et all won't let me down. So, I had intended on giving AM a shot. I never got around to it, sadly. Seeing the Nexus write up MADE ME want to go look this stuff up and understand it. So, I purchased AM.
You can't put a price on that kind of inspiration :)

Yeah, it just seems like it would be convenient to have a shorter way to note that - regardless of weapon or natural attack - you can use your veilweaver level for attack rolls with it, while leaving it off of other weapons and natural attacks. Not sure it would be descriptor, just...something along those lines. But that's just a random thought. Either way, still happy.

As you note though, daevics can add veils with Shape Veil and other options, so it's still there, and who knows? Maybe there will be a daevic passion that adds a Head slot for them and brings those all together...

Indeed. Yeah, forgot about daevics not having that slot, though Access Low Chakra Slot would also be a possibility. Hmm, though now pondering a magic item that can act as an artificial chakra, price depending on the chakra in question, but probably pretty dang expensive regardless. Anyways, looking forward to seeing the other possible classes.

Archetype? It's what they exist for.

Ssalarn, I've been watching your other thread about the Vigilante, and was wondering what an Akashic archetype for the Vigilante would look like. Any thoughts?

maybe your whole vigilante persona is one big veil? like your superhero costume?

That would be SO AWESOME!

Ooo, they should also do archetypes for Aegis and Soulknife that turns them into veils.

I've played around with a couple ways of doing the idea. The closest to something I really like is basically building your vigilante identity out of a veil set(s) that you assume the same way you assume a vigilante identity, but I'd want to offset that by giving you non-flashy stuff to invest essence in when you're in your social identity, or let you burn essence to use it like a luck pool or something similar.

You could make it a dual function of the veils themselves, but that seems fiddly. How do you do it without 1) unnecessarily pairing social and vigilante effects and 2) making veils that play poorly with other classes? What if the class came with a set of "veil mirrors" where your social identity could make use of having something shaped/bound to certain chakra? So as long as you have something shaped to Hands, you could invest it in the Social Identity Hands Receptacle*.

*with a better name, of course

That "mirroring" you mentioned got me thinking... Maybe some veils have one set of abilities when you are in your social persona, and other ones in your secret identity? Imagine "this veil gives you a bonus on diplomacy when in social, intimidate when in secret, invested essence gives you bonuses to will saves when in social, and to damage when in secret"
