Considering Rolling Up a Void Elemental Specialist Wizard

Advice

But I have a question: What element opposes Void?

"Unlike a normal arcane school, the void elemental school requires the wizard to select a single element (air, earth, fire, or water) as his opposition school."

Thanks! I guess I accidentally overlooked that!

Create Mr. Pitt has the right of it.

I love the Void school, but one thing to bear in mind when looking at it: each of the basic elemental schools (earth, air, fire and water) have Resist Energy and Protection from Energy as school spells, as well as several of the Summon Monster spells, making these more taxing to prepare.

The difficulty accessing Summon Monster spells could be brutal for certain spellcasters, while the energy protection spells also hurt. Technically one might bypass the latter restriction by picking up Communal Resist Energy (which I prefer over Protection from Energy anyways), but it feels dirty to me somehow.

I like selecting Wood as the opposition school, as it doesn't have any real stand-out, "must have" spells for most casters (one could argue Fickle Winds might fit that category, and I really like Sending, but for the rare occasions you need it, you could suck it up and use 2 slots to prepare it).

Of course, the upside to having an Elemental school is that with only one opposition school, you can effectively bypass this downside via the Opposition Research discovery at 9th level +.

Excellent advice! Thank you!

Those spells aren't just on the list for the four basic elements. The Advanced Players Guide lists those spells (among others) as being on the spell lists for ALL Elementalist Wizards (see pgs. 194-196). I see no reason that wouldn't apply to the newer Elemental Schools as well.

Hmm, interesting...

I was basing my assessment of the school spell lists off Archives of Nethys' page ( http://archivesofnethys.com/SchoolDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Void ). It appears to match what is found on D20PFSRD with regards top the Void spell list ( http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/arcane-schools/paizo--- arcane-schools/elemental-arcane-schools/void-elemental-school ).

If the Dragon Empires Primer (sourcebook for the Void school) explicitly list the school spells, and doesn't include those spells, that seems like a situation of "specific trumps general". But if the APG says explicitly that *all* Elemental schools get those spells, that might be enough to get around that (as it creates the presumption that those spells should be added to whatever Elemental school might later be created, unless stated otherwise).

I'm guessing the APG probably isn't that specific, but I don't have it handy to check.

Elementalist Wizard Spells.

It does indeed say "All" for Elemental Speech, Elemental Touch, Resist Energy, and Summon Monster 2, for a start.

Hmmm. I think I might just be convinced! Thanks to you and FamiliarMask for pointing this out.

Sooner or later I want to create a scythe-wielding Void School Eldritch Knight concept using School Strike with Reveal Weakness between scythe strikes. In other words, the Grim Reaper.

Void Wizard||Magus could be a cool gestalt...hmm...

True, though a Magus can't really wield a Furious scythe with Controlled Rage...

Fine then, enjoy your sparkly little Magus mini-scythe. I'll stick with my raging head-tax-collector.
