How other Characters can help?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Can other characters at your location or other locations for that matter use spells to help defeat a check. example if Lini is facing the villain would Maznar be able to cast a spell to help defeat the check?

Only the encountering character can play a card on a combat check that says "For your combat check...." (usually a spell or weapon).
(Except: it the card has two or more checks, another character at the same location can take other checks on the card. The encountering character has to take at least one, and this doesn't have to be the first one.)

There are spells and other cards you can play to help another character on their check. Like the spell Strength, which adds +3 to a Strength check. These cards will say if they can be played to help another character, and if you have to be at the same location.

You can always play a blessing to add a die or two (depending on the blessing) to aid another character on their check, regardless of location, unless there is some special power (for instance on the encountered card) which says you can't.

Just to be clear, these cards will be worded in such a way as to make it clear whether they can be played to help another character. They won't usually say so explicitly/directly. The difference is usually whether they say to add dice or a bonus to "a [type] check", "a [type] check at your location" or "your [type] check".

So if it says "a" check or "any" check, you can play it to help another character, but if it says "your check" you can't.

Except: if the card defeats or evades the bane, you can't play it to help another character, unless it explicitly says so. Example: RotR Masterwork Tools, which can be recharged to defeat a barrier whose difficulty does not exceed 14. You can only use this on your own encounter.

Also, if the villain (or any bane) has more than one check to defeat (usually denoted by two numbers separated by the word "then," not "or") characters at the same location can attempt any number of these checks as long as the encounter-er performs at least one of them.

For example, Ezren and Harsk are both at the Collapsing Bridge when Ezren encounters the villain, who has the checks to defeat [combat 45] then [combat 55] then [combat 65]. Unfortunately, Ezren only has one combat spell in hand. So Harsk agrees to handle two of the checks with his weapon while Ezren performs the third.
