(whistle) that's a lot. I read everything in background just to let you know.

Scary thing is, that's actually that shortened version. If I've got time, I'm probably going to go back through it and refine some bits and expand a lot of it. We'll see. I may do that anyway since it'll give me and you plenty of stuff to tie back to in game.

Seriously, I do hope you find plenty of hooks for things in there, even as it is now.

@ DM Default:
And other distinguished guests

Hi! I just thought I would try to apply for this one with a revamped, and as yet unused alias or avatar.

This here is Úrtnechech, a half-orc bloodrager.
I thought I'd put him forward, as I saw neither half-orc nor bloodragers in the application list. As yet.
And rest assured; he is definitely NOT just another pretty face! :D

Anyway, any comments or constructive criticisms are welcome.
The backstory isn't exactly sparkling, but that can be tweaked.

Thanks!

========================================

Back Story:
Still feeling weary, but no longer listless, Úrtnechech stands up. He yawns lazily, now that he is alone. Again. He inspects small Isgeri patrol, or what is left of them, to make sure all are dead. They had not expected him to fly into a deadly rage when they interrupted him burying his friends.

"Much better!" he says to nobody in particular, after drinking a healing elixir from one of the soldiers. He cleans himself and his weapons and hurriedly tosses the Isgeri remains atop a heap of dead goblins. He is soon on his way. He scarcely notices the extra weight from the food and valuables he scavenged.

Luck is with the half-orc. He encounters nobody else on the road and then finds a long-abandoned bear's den to sleep in for the night. In the morning, he studies the documents and maps from the soldiers he killed. Good! Much closer to the Andoren border than he thought.

Úrtnechech had been cursing his misfortune for getting stranded in Isger. What should have been a routine patrol to hunt down some raiding goblins went wrong from the start. They blundered right into a well-laid goblin ambush. After the battle, all the goblins were dead. Which was good. Everyone else with Úrtnechech was also dead. Which was bad.

The closer Úrtnechech got to Andoran, the better he felt. He was still saddened and angered by the loss of his Andoren friends. But survived and was even able to bury his comrades. It would have been a much more peaceful burial, had he not been interrupted by that small patrol. No great loss, he muses. He loathes those devil worshipping idiots from Isger and Cheliax …

He clearly remembers the abuses he suffered on the Painful Delight, a Chelish slave ship. He was one of many slaves destined for the Chelish port of Westcrown. He proved to be the singularly most unruly of all the slaves on the Painful delight. He nearly killed one Chelish crewman, Ixorus, who tried flogging him into submission. For several more days, Úrtnechech was denied food and repeatedly flogged by Ixorus. Despite all that, Úrtnechech refused to submit. Faith had nothing to do with his tenacity; he was fuelled by an odd mystic rage that he seemed to acquire after surviving a plague in the slave pens of Katapesh, where he had been raised.

Several days out to sea, the Painful Delight was attacked by an Andoren raider. The Chelish crew of the Pain's Fancy fought to the bitter end, but all were killed. Úrtnechech and his fellow slaves were soon found themselves in the Andoren capital of Almas.

Úrtnechech soon joined the Andoren army. He had enthusiasm, but was profoundly wilful. He was soon assigned to border patrols on the Isger frontier with other unruly soldiers operating in small formations. He met several berserkers there who taught him how to focus his rages …

Turning his thoughts back to the present, Úrtnechech decides he does not want to reenlist, now that his probationary service in the Andoren army is nearing its end. He just lost all the friends he had. He still wants to fight. But on his own terms. Especially if it gives him an excuse to kill anyone in the service of Cheliax! That thought cheers him. But first, he has to report on the death of the rest his patrol to the Andoren officers at the fort now coming into view.

@AdamWarnock: Holy hell XD I've read the whole thing too just so ya know and you have some real talent. You ever do any of those writing competitions?

Anyways, I think it's safe to say that you almost certainly earned yourself a spot with this backstory! Kalisuel seems like one hell of a character *pun intended* And, if I were lucky enough to be selected (which I was rather confident of at first but is now fading quickly with all these epic characters with great backstories come tumbling in) with Kalisuel's history in caravan work perhaps Jix will have heard of her. =P

Sovereign Court

Don't worry too much about it Annubis. You don't have to have an "epic" or "dark" story to play an interesting character!

Dark Archive

Now I feel my chances flowing down the drain...

@Jesse Heinig: I still think I have a good backstory XD I just think a lot of other people have very good ones too. And then there's Adam with his freakin' novel masterpiece over here XP

Still I appreciate the sentiment x3 I know I'll be able to give Jix the sparkling personality she has =3

@Shadepelt: Oh don't be so down friend X3 Shadepelt is a very interesting character in her own right. And even if we don't get selected in this campaign perhaps we could apply these character concepts to another ^^

Sovereign Court

@Annubis: If you want an "epic" backstory, you can do it formulaically, by hitting these points:
* The "pull": Your character wants something. You want to get money, or power, or find your mom, or learn to harness your fiendish powers, or get rid of your fiendish taint, or whatever. This "pulls" your character toward a goal and gives motivation.
* The "push": Something is driving your character forward, even when (s)he doesn't want to. Your character is being chased by a bounty hunter, or haunted by past failures, or slowly dying of a disease, or overwhelmed by the tainted influence of a possessing spirit or evil heritage. When the character doesn't want to move forward, this "pushes" the character back into action.
* The special quality: The character is different in some way, and something outside of the character's control has had a major impact on his/her life. Born an outcast in a society that didn't accept him/her, or chosen for a divine gift, or raised on a farm but always with an eye to the horizon, or part of a family of gifted magicians but who has no personal magical talent. This quality sets your character apart and creates conflicts that help to define their personality and show why they are not "just like everyone else."
* The choice: The character's compass based on their choice of how to respond to these events. To some degree this encompasses alignment. It also carries over into the character's preferences and agendas in other ways. The character raised as an outcast decides that (s)he doesn't like it and is looking to find a place to fit in, and (s)he hates rules and customs that are forced on people who don't fit into society. Or the warrior from the family of magicians decides that (s)he resents all of the magically talented and thinks they get off easy with their "tricks." Or the farmboy believes that life is really about experiencing new and different things and rejects the notion of safety and the fulfillment of family and community.

This template will let you quickly and easily generate a character who can be an active centerpiece for adventures, like:
* Drizzt Do'urden is pulled by his desire to find a community where he can fit in. He is pushed by the constant stream of challengers and hunters from the Underdark who want to kill him; he must stay one step ahead of them or defeat them in battle. His special quality is that he had a moral center in a society of the amoral and he chose to reject the values of that society, and he became an exile because of it. His choice is that he believes that he is never good enough to fit in with the people who share his values because his past endangers them and the world at large will never trust him.
* Raistlin Majere is pulled by his desire to acquire power and become the most powerful magician in all of Krynn. He is pushed by the curse and sickness that dogs him, making his body a ruined wreck that could die at any moment if he tries to extend his power too far. His special quality is that out of a group of several friends he is the only one to have a talent for magic. His choice is in his Test when he shows that his pursuit of magic is more important to him than his friends or his brother.
* Thorin Oakenshield is pulled by his desire to reclaim the Halls of the Mountain King and the dwarf treasures long ago stolen by Smaug. He is pushed by the pursuit of the goblins whose leaders his family slew, who dog his steps as he makes his way to the Lonely Mountain. His special quality is that he is the true heir of the King Under the Mountain and the one dwarf who can lead the last survivors of the mountain kingdom back to their home. His choice is that he succumbs to his greed and decides that his wealth and his pride is more important than the welfare of his kinsmen, much to his tragic end.

Of course you don't need this to play a good character. Characters can be people who don't have tragic or mysterious backgrounds, who have well-adjusted families, who fit into society, or who have fairly mundane agendas. Indeed, having characters of both types makes for a more dynamic party, because if everyone has a convoluted and epic backstory, it pulls the story development in multiple directions and can make it hard to focus unless they all have a unifying element. Just like dramatic pacing in a game needs its high tense moments as well as its low, relaxing moments, a good group needs characters who fit into the "normal" and characters who stand out from the "normal."

There's sometimes a tendency to make the orphan murderhobo with an epic tragic backstory because it provides an easy explanation for why an adventurer is out in the world doing risky and crazy things. Some players just don't want to deal with the issue of an adventurer who has relatives, loved ones, and a place in the community, especially because having a home like that makes it hard to justify the wandering around that most adventurers do. But it's not impossible. Characters can be made interesting if they have parents, siblings, children, spouses, and homes to come back to when the adventure is done - just like a traveling pilot, businessman, or entertainer in the modern era who goes from city to city and comes back home from time to time. Also some players don't like this because if your character has people who are important to him/her, these people could be attacked and used against you. Depending on your tastes that might make for good drama or it might just make you feel like they are a weakness for your character. (One of my characters in another PBP on this board is a mother who had two children and outlived them before she became an adventurer!)

I will say, as a regular DM, my personal preference is for backstories that I can digest quickly. Running a game is enough work without reading a novel about each character. ;)

Which is why I did a cliffnotes version. :D

@Annubis: I haven't tried any writing competitions, and to be honest, I feel like I rushed this one. Thanks for the kind words though! As Jesse said, you don't have to have an epic or dark backstory to have a good character. On of my favorite characters that I've played is a goofball with a fondness for hats.

Dark Archive

well one of my favorite characters is an insane kobold shaman who is the reincarnation of a white dragon, and is also completely and utterly obsessed with bones. she's in a dead campaign right now or i would have applied with her... i may drop the dead thing just to have the character available.

Cool concept!

Story 2:
On a moonless night in an elvish city, if one were to look out their window and peer intently at the street one might see a slight movement that would most likely be written off as a trick of the flickering lamp lights. Most would be unconcerned about such a phenomenon and go back to their daily life, forgetting it just as quickly as they saw it. But for the man ghosting along the back alleys and shadows of the street, it was life or death. Fear hurried his pace more than usual but he still made no more noise than a scurrying mouse. He used the lamps to his advantage as it broke up his figure as they flickered. He used the most cluttered alleys because they were the least likely anyone would use, or be waiting in. He weaved all over the city in a round about way to his destination to confuse possible pursuers. But, the hardest thing to do when moving in stealth is to always be aware of your surroundings. If he had, he probably would have noticed that all his effort was in vain. Above him, in the shadows, a pair of amused eyes watched his progress. They were always ahead of him, always watching, as if anticipating his route before he even decided upon it.

As the elven man hurried along another alley, his world was flipped upside-down, literally. One moment he was moving forward and everything was quiet, and the next he was moving upwards lead by his left ankle and screaming all the way. He bounced in the air a couple of times at about the second story of the buildings around him and settled into a slow spin. He felt his heart hammer away in his throat harder than ever. It nearly stopped when he heard a voice behind him.

"You wouldn't be trying to leave with out paying what you owe, now would you Dryfus?" The man named Dryfus yelped in fear at the voice, jerking his head towards the sound only causing him to over spin and miss his chance to see his captor. As he came back around more slowly he got better view. Leaning against a wall on an impossibly small ledge was a man in a cloak of many different mottled shades, though mostly dark. It made the cloak hard to discern from the wall behind it and would provide excellent cover if he were to wrap it around himself. Peeking out from under the cloak he could make out a longbow and full quiver of arrows. His leather armor was a dark drown and he wore the same shade long, hunter's boots that came up to just below the knee. At his waist were two elvish short swords and a number of belt pouches. He was using a dagger to absentmindedly pick away at non-existent dirt under his nails as if he wasn't talking to a man hanging upside-down several feet above the ground. The most distinguishing feature though, was the odd hat he wore. Instead of the usual round shape, this one was triangular and narrow. If seen from above it would look like an arrowhead. Also, a single feather was sticking out on the left side. In the darkness the hat completely obscured the stranger's face.

"Who...who are you?" The dangling man said jerking his head so he wouldn't spin anymore.

"Is this really the time to be getting to know me? Your not really in a position to ask questions. But, you have probably heard of me refereed to as the Owl." Recognition showed in the man's eyes. He had heard of his "employer's" new help. A mercenary and bounty hunter that would do anything for money. An excellent tracker, even in the city, a deadly shot with the bow and an experienced sword fighter. Yes he had heard of him, and many feared him.

"I'm sorry. I don't have the money. Business hasn't been so good lately. He asked for too much. Even if business was good I couldn't put together that much money. Please let me go. I have a family and children. Please, I beg you. They would be so heart broken with out their father. You wouldn't want them to grow up with that kind of pain would you? Ple..." Owl shifted on the ledge effectively silencing Dryfus.

"Oh I don't know. I grew up without my father or mother and look at me now. I turned out just fine." Owl crouched on the ledge, another near impossible feat as there was so little, and brought his face level with Dryfus. The hat was tilted up enough to see some of the man underneath. All Dryfus saw was a maniacal smile that never seemed to reach the piercing green eyes. It was as if the darkness itself was smiling at him. A smile that said "If you answer with anything but the affirmative you might as well be standing at Heaven's gate or Hell's door", which ever you deserve.

It was a practiced trick and got an immediate reaction. Dryfus' rapidly beating heart nearly stopped again and his body, hot from exertion, went cold and rigid. He looked much like a hanging corpse...until he remembered he had been asked a question.

"Yes, yes. Right. Of course. You turned out perfectly fine." Dryfus answered in as many affirmatives as he could and put on a marvelously fake smile for good measure.

"Good. Now, I know you can't pay and so does you...our employer, so he sent me to come get to see what you two could work out. Probably just going to be a finger or two. No big deal really." The hanging man's body went limp with defeat, knowing much worse was probably in store, but tensed at the next words. "On the other hand...I realize that you have been paying exceedingly high premiums and though you could not reach the required amount, you probably got close, what with being the excellent businessman that you are. Unfortunately, our employer has become increasingly stingy with his money over the past few months so...I would like to run a business proposition by you."

Dryfus was weary of any deal this man would make but he wasn't exactly in the best bargaining position to say no. "Um...okay."

"Good man. How about this? You give me what you have as it is far above what I am getting paid for this job and I let you go to scurry off to your family in some far away city." Owl added a small waving gesture to prove his point.

"You...you mean...I...of...of course. Here take it." Dryfus couldn't believe what he was hearing but it was the best chance he had at living. He frantically searched his body for the money he owed, spinning himself around a few times too, and, though it wasn't enough for his employer it was still a substantial amount. As he came back around he thrust it into the bounty hunter's waiting hand, hope bubbling up inside him that Owl would keep his word.

Owl held the bag of money in his hand admiring it for a second before attaching it to his belt.

"It was a pleasure doing business with you." With that Owl tipped his odd hat, handed Dryfus the dagger and leapt to the street below. Dryfus stared at the dagger dumbstruck before flailing about until he turned so the cloaked man came into view.

"Hey wait! Can you get me down?"

"I said I would let you go, not free you. Chow." The one called Owl disappeared around the corner leaving behind a man hanging from his ankle with a ten foot drop and a dagger. It would funny to see what he came up with in his haste to leave but Owl needed to make tracks too before his employer got wind of what happened.

A few minutes later the guards at the gate witnessed a man walk out of the city in the dead of night, whistling a tune and tossing a rather large bag of coins in the air. Before their slow minds finally realized how suspicious he looked his body seemed to meld into the darkness just beyond the light of the gate torches and then vanish completely leaving only the echos of the whistled tune behind.

My name is Orym Will Luthias but very few know that name. Most know me as the Owl. I am a jack of most trades and I will do anything if the price is right. Money is my business...and business is Good.

Here is some more on Owl that is in no way a response to the praise and adoration Adam's backstory got. I am not jealous. Shut up.

Thanks to multi-talented I think I will take rogue from 3 on so he's better at combat. Might return after three levels for studied strike. That plus sneak attack should be pretty good. But his main focus will always be information.

@AdamWarnock + Hesse Heinig: Aww thanks guys but yeah like I was saying I'm proud of Jix's backstory al ready I just think a lot of other people have good back stories too. I'be been writing for years x3 still am bUT I can't say in what until it's finished let's just say it's Pathfinder related :P

It being a Primal Bloodline, progress into Dragon Disciple ought to be possible, I believe.

@"Owl": Heya Owl! I love your backstory but going through your character sheet there are a couple issues. First of all, in your "About Owl" section you say that he wields a Longbow +3 (1d8) but in your gear you say he wields a Shortbow +3 (1d6), you probably meant the Shortbow is the one you use because you aren't proficient with the longbow.

Second, you don't seem to have your armor listed anywhere but I'm gonna assume it's studded leather based on the bonuses listed to your AC. If this is the case your AC should be listed as (AC=14, Tch=11, Flt=13) due to you having a Medium encumbrance with your weapons, gear, amd armor.

Then in skills your Disguise should be +5 not +4
Your Stealth and Sleight of Hand should be at +1 for encumbrance (you have it at +7)
Knowledge (Nobility, Planes, and Religion) are not class skills to you so those should each be at +4 as opposed to +7.

Just some things you may want to fix before going forward.

@DM: FYI, i changed Empiricist archetype.

Shortbow is correct. First time i built him i didn't realize the investigator had bad proficiencies. I also didn't realize the Rogue's kit was [b]37 pounds. [/d] i'd need a str 15 for that to be light load. I am not moving stats so i have to loose some stuff i guess.

Disguise is cha which i have +1. Thats +5.

@Owl: I've really enjoyed reading both of the tales you've written. They really give a good feel for the character, and if we both get picked, it's going to be interesting to see how Owl and Kalisuel react to each other. If nothing else, the fireworks will be spectacular.

And the profile is updated. Really kinda wish we could upload our own avatars, but oh well.

@GM: that's great! it's good to get to know your players before the game.

i just realized i have not calculated my carry weight... BRB!

EDIT: darn, medium load :(

well i can pass the heavier stuff over to someone else when the game starts. We can always buy a mule.

I can haz mule? I need a bigger pickle jar...

Shadepelt wrote:

… i just realized i have not calculated my carry weight... BRB!

EDIT: darn, medium load :( …

That's one handy thing about being a bloodrager, or barbarian.

Even with a medium load, I can move 30 feet.

"I'm not too thmart, but I can lift big thingth!"

Medium load with her backpack; dropping it gets her under a light load, so I have her skills calculated for light since I can't see her fighting with it on if she can help it.

I believe Adventurer's Backpacks have Quick-release straps. Or was it Masterwork? I can't remember offhand.

I believe the MW Backpack, 50 GP, also gives you a +1 Strength for carrying capacity. I think this translates to 3-5 pounds increase in light load capacity, which can make a huge difference for beginning characters and their basic items.

it increases more the higher you strength is. The jump from 17 to 18 means that you have an effective increase of 12 lbs to your light load. A masterwork pack is 2 lbs. heavier than the standard pack.

That said, Kalisuel doesn't have anything that nice on her. It fits her background not to have any nice stuff. (That I couldn't afford it. Oops.)

Carrying weight is a big deal for dex based characters so I'm always very cautious when getting starting items. You can always buy more later in the game when you have a cart.

Dark Archive

Well, I can always drop some pots and other cooking suplies. It's usually assumed that you have those on you anyways ;)

Who needs pots and pans when you can have a pickle? You can pickle anything!

@Sadepelt: Fair enough but that's up to DM Default at the end xP

@ Shadepelt
Normally, I do keep an accurate count on weight management for realism, but I'm planning on discussing more game tone and specifics with the selected participants.

Just to let you all know how the deadline and selection works.

Recruitment closes on the 1st of September, more accurately when I wake up on September 2nd (to give leeway for time difference). Please refrain from changing anything after the deadline. Selection can be as soon as a day later or up to a week, depending on time I have in my day.

I have looked over aspects of submissions very minimally and will go over each entry in depth after recruitment ends. This is to ensure bias is kept at a minimum on my part.

Dark Archive

okay, thanks for letting us know :)

here is some fluff for everyone to read about Shadepelt if they wish...

Fluff:
Miro, aka "shadepelt", is short for a catfolk(4'6"), and has used her size to her advantage. She is lean and well built. Her fur is a dark grey, almost black. Her eyes are a bright blue.
She has devoted herself to perfecting the arts of stealth, thievery, and assassination. In order to do so she has learned how to extract poisons from several plants, as well as the anatomy of living creatures so that she can deliver the killing blow far more swiftly.

Those who know her say she is quiet, disciplined, and harsh. She is hard to break, and rarely speaks. She has a poor sense of humor. She is known to be strange. She has odd habits and tendencies. She often smells those she first meets in order to learn their sent so that she can recognize them.

She became an adventurer to become better at her arts. She knows that killing people will only bring people at her heals, so the best way to perfect her skills are to use them on monsters and bandits.

Goals: 1)Shadepelt want to perfect her craft, she wants to find the best way to do everything she is good at. she will achieve this by using her skills on her foes, she will sneak attack mostly. when she can't do that she will try to flank her opponents and attempt to get that Sneak attack damage once again. she will be an ambusher, climbing trees, walls, anything to get high and get that charge bonus from falling atop enemies.

2)Shadepelt is a little greedy. she likes having her money all safe... but how she views wealth is different than normal. her view on wealth isn't about gold, but is instead based on the tools being used in her art. she prefers the deadliest weapons and magic, and the best equipment for stealth. another drive for her is to achieve the perfect weapon for killing, as well as acquire the best armor for her stealth.

3) I plan on probably going assassin.. but unless I am allowed to do that, I will focus instead on improving her ability to fight. she will become a hunter, and her enemies will be her prey.

Secrets: 1) Shadepelt rarely speaks, this is because she has vowed to perfect her art. whenever she speaks, she make a goal to silence one more person. It's a balance for her. she sees the world too full of words, so she will not speak without first silencing another... usually a monster, but she will take any chance to silence a humanoid if she is allowed.

2) Shadepelt is unaware of an outsider that has taken interest in her. the outsider I am allowing to be fully up to the GM, because i don't want to put too powerful a being in a game. But the outsider will likely be lawful something.

Allegiances: 1)The art of Death
2) the code of the assassin
3)the art of stealth
4)Her oath of Silence for Silence

as for carry weight, it's as easy as dropping my 10 torches and my pot, that's 14 pound off, leaving like one pound left for me to drop, like my caltrops or ten of my throwing stars.or my mess kit, then i could just use someone else's

@DM Default: Awww I was hoping selections would happen on the first XD it's my day off. But ah well whenever's fine. Like I said my work in security means I have a lot of free time to address this whenever =3

Also I like the realistic weight management tbh.

@Shadepelt: Be careful with that though you never know when combat may start. You might not have time to drop all your torches, pots, and caltrops in time.

i didn't mean in game, i meant before the game... in fact i just dropped the pot, mess kit, my crossbow, and bolts. i used the gold from that to get some softpaw boots... putting me at 51lbs and making it a light load for me :)

you know a pot weighs 4 lbs, and they have a mythral pot for 1001 gp. it weighs 2 lbs

Secrets: 1) Shadepelt rarely speaks, this is because she has vowed to perfect her art. whenever she speaks, she make a goal to silence one more person. That sounds like a fun challenge for Owl. Both to get her to speak and to not be the one she silence's. A razor's edge to balance on. Glad I switched back to Emiricist so I have Acrobatics again.

Dark Archive

ah yes, but she rarely kills the one she spoke to, unless the one she spoke to is her target.
just know that when she speaks, she aims to kill.

Edit: working on some in character stuff... will have that up by the deadline :)

@Shadepelt: O.O By the gods who would ever need a mythral pot?! That's so expensive for a pot! XD

Also Shadepelt... You wouldn't happen to be a fan of the "Warriors" series now would you?

VERY fancy trail rations, thats what you use a fancy pot for

I just read the description... there is no point to it... just food rarely sticks to it and it's sturdy... that's literally it XD why would you have such a pointlessly expensive item?!

As i said. Fancy food. Same reason people have silver cutlery or crystal glasses.

And maybe if you have the str to swing it =^^= a fancy improvised weapon

Dark Archive

Yes I am a fan of that series, but it gets very repetitive later on, and is focusing too much on the mystical side of things... yes my name was inspired... catfolk!

And yes, I'm pretty sure the mythral pot is just some random loot you can pick up in a dungeon. Or better yet, some rich noble's kitchen.

Masterwork improvised weapon. In the hands of a drunken fist its deadly.

I was actually thinking about giving Kalisuel the improvised weapon feats at levels 2 and three. It'd be worth the feats just to so how our opponents react to being clobbered by someone's pack. :)

THAT'S IT! Your cursed mythral pot inspired me! I spent the last hour and a half making a cook character XD good for nothing but cooking but man can he cook.

Sovereign Court

Psst... see Molly's background skills. ;)

This party will be well-fed, at least!

The cook I made has a +14 in Cooking and a +14 in Survival to gather food at level 1 and has a assembly of spells selected for the sole purpose of helping with the cooking. And an assembly of +7-+8 Knowledge checks so he knows better what to cook for each person not to mention all the cooking related gear! Just gods forbid he ever get in combat XD

Sovereign Court

Sounds like an excellent use of the Expert class.

Actually he's a wizard Harry.
