The following are excerpts from the journal of one, Ember Pyrothius, a pyrausta bard, following her adventure into the Maelstrom Rift. Journal entries will be hidden under s SPOILER tag; read them only if you have already played 7-99!

Ember’s Journal – Entry 10371:

Because of my reputation for being so brave and courageous, I have been invited you Ashasar, Liaison to the Seat of Balance, to embark on a glorious quest! I will be chronicling the journey of a group of intrepid adventurers representing the Concordance of Elements! We are to travel from the bustling metropolis of Armun Kelisk to investigate the cause of irregularities in the currents that flow through the Elemental Plane of Air! I am meeting with my companions at someplace called The Four Winds! I hope they have food!

Ember’s Journal – Entry 10372:

The Four Winds DID have food! I have discovered the most wonderful repast, a dessert known as “bubble pie!” How did I ever live before trying this delicasy?! It is amazing! I highly recommend it, if you ever have a chance to get to Armun Kelisk!
I met the others who will be joining me on my noble quest! They are an eclectic group, representing all four of the Elemental Planes, as well as a fifth representing Balance. There is Zephyr of the Forgotten Sun, who hails from a distant planet. He represents the element of Air. Next is a water mephit named Octaris, acting as an envoy for the plane of Water. He is apparently very powerful and is known as “the best wizard who has all the arcane power in the place it comes from!” I can tell he is going to be very useful on this journey! A thoqqua warrior by the name of Rhyol is with us as well, representing the element of Fire! She is quite beautiful, though I have no idea why the others keep referring to her as a he! It is SO obvious that she is a woman! Representing the seat of Balance is Jamila; I think she might be a human, though the hawk she has with her is DEFINITELY from the Plane of Air! Lastly, we have Krakos, who is NOT a fun person at ALL! He is acting as Liason for the Plane of Earth, and is extremely grumpy! He will NOT be getting a good review in these chronicles later!
Oh! I almost forgot myself! I am to act as the Chronicler of our group, acting as an outside perspective! The mephit has argued that I sort of represent Fire, therefore throwing out the internal balance of our group! Ashasar has assured him that I am representing Heart (whatever that may be!), and that there needed to be an even number to ensure balance! There are three males and three males in our group too! Ashasar is SO wise! And he has promised me more bubble pie upon my return!

Ember’s Journal – Entry 10373:

We have been tasked with finding passage to the disturbance, which has proven harder than anticipated! Even with a promissory note from Ahsasar, we face quite some difficulty! The first airship captain we talked to, one Razakim, laughed at us when we told him of our mission! He even besmirched the Concordance of Elements, referring to us as “well-meaning, but naïve!” He expressed concern about hosting Rhyol on his ship, but I think that was just an excuse because he is too SCARED to take us where we are headed! While his ship was very pretty, crafted from silver with big billowing purple sails, it didn’t look sturdy enough to carry us to our destination! Even worse, he did not have an bubble pie stocked in his galley! I hope we find a ship soon! Otherwise, our quest might end before it begins!

Ember’s Journal – 10374:

We have located a captain willing to take us where we need to go. Captain Sisivel is a air mephit and a member of some merchant consortium known as Thousand Wings. Her ship, The Luck of Falkor, is carved out of some dark crystal and has a CLOUD DRAGON for a figurehead! This is a good omen in my opinion! She is NOT a pansy, unlike the other captains we have talked to today! Even more important, she has a well-stocked galley, which does include a store of bubble pie! Having secured passage, now we have a little time to gather necessary supplies for our glorious journey! Like Razakim, she also expressed concern about granting passage to a thoqqua, but our wizard has a solution for that! First though, we must gather the necessary mystical spell components needed for his magical ward to work and insure the safety of our ship!

Ember’s Journal – 10375:

Octaris has returned at last, with the final and most important component necessary for his powerful enchantment to work; a vintage container for Rhyol to contain the magical forces that will provide comfort for our thoqqua friend for the duration of our trip! Apparently though, “vintage” means “old and crappy” since the container resembles an old bucket! Watching the wizard cast his spell is truly amazing! First, he had Rhyol climb into the container. Then he cast a powerful spell of his own devising, Make Less Hot! It seemed to resemble the spell commonly known as Create Water, but being only a dabbler in the arcane arts, I have no doubt that the spell is simply beyond my scope to understand! He followed this up by casting Lower Temperature, which also looked to be a variant of Creat Water! I know I will learn a LOT about arcane magic by the time this trip is through! We are so lucky yo have such an accomplished wizard with us for this quest!

Ember’s Journal – 10376:

I might have been premature in judging the bravery of Captain Sisivel! Consulting the star charts, we must be getting close to the cause of the disturbances to the air currents! Dark clouds and weird pockets of turbulence have caused the good captain to declare that for the safety of her ship, she will go no further! She HAS graciously granted us the use of a glider-boat to take us the rest of the way though. She has also provided us with supplies (including a small portion of bubble pie!) to sustain us for a few days, as well as a way to summon her for our return trip if we either 1) discover the source of this disturbance, or 2) decide that it is too difficult to solve on our own. Our return call is some sort of potted plant in a sealed bottle; opening it will draw the attention of sky serpents, who are notorious gossips and apparently have many dealings with the Thousand Wings mercantile consortium. This seems to be a needlessly complex manner of communication, ripe for error and trouble, but it is what we've been given, so all I can do is hope that I am wrong! Regardless, she will wait here outside of the maelstrom for three days before turning back… I hope we can resolve this before then! Armun Kelisk would be a LONG flight for my little wings!

Ember’s Journal – 10377:

We have embarked from the ship on the glider-boat, a smaller representation of The Luck of Falkor with only main sail, and a series of complicated wing flaps. Setting off into the ominous maelstrom that seems to house the disturbance, we have discovered up ahead what looks to be a white, marble tower floating in the clouds ahead. The winds have picked up, pulling at our tiny craft and we ____________...

Ember’s Journal – 10378:

I am so glad I was able to recover my journal! I would have hated to try and write a comprehensive report without my notes! Our intrigued ship ran afoul, throwing crucial items out of our tiny craft! A gathering of comozant wyrds tried absconding with our supplies, lost when we were tossed about by the edges of this storm! I was able to retrieve our sky charts with the minor aid of Krakos, who had also retrieved our ship’s mythical figurehead. Zephyr was able to to return with our food and supplies (alas, our store of bubble pie did NOT survive the storm!), and Octaris was able to grab our astrolabe from the remains of a ship less fortunate than ours. He also retrieved the bucket!
I might need to reaccess my initial thoughts about Krakos. He DID come to my aid when I was beset by the horde of wyrds, driving them away so I could return to our craft with the charts! He might not be as bad as I originally assumed, even if he IS an oread!

Ember’s Journal – 10379:

As previously observed, we discovered the remains of a white marble tower within the angry, storm-laden clouds ahead! It seems to be the center of all this mess, and is definitely the cause of our current predicament! This will require further investigation, so I will write more later!

Ember’s Journal – 10380:

Enclosed at the center of the tower is a dark cyclone of unknown origin! Upon entering, I couldn't help but notice the complicated reliefs that cover the walls. These sculpted murals seem to depict some type of elemental lord, though not one I am familiar with. One shows a city entirely made of ice, with djinn huddled around a large spherical building surrounded by similar smaller buildings. In another, mephitis seem to form from the breath weapon of a massive dragon! Is it possible that mephit were created by the First Dragons? I’m sure that Octaris would NOT be happy to find that out! The last shows an immense being with the body of a serpent spun from storm clouds, the head of a lion with a mane made of lightening, and hundreds of clawed feet! He has a look of contentment, gazing down on what he has created! According to Krakos, his name is Ranginori, the Duke of Thunder, and he was revered as a demigod! I have never heard of him, but then again, I am not all that familiar with religious figures. We have decided to search this level first before further investigating the cyclone, wise choice! Maybe we will find some clues as to what has befallen this wondrous place!

Ember's Journal – 10381:

In the first room we investigated, we found crystal statues of DRAGONS adorning petals of honor! Whoever owned this tower knew the importance of dragons and gave proper respect to the power inherently represented by our kind! These statues apparently represent crystal dragons, of the type usually found on the Plane of Earth. These amazing sculptures were sculpted with superior craftsmanship. We soon discovered that sending electricity through them makes them seem alive, flapping their wings and even appearing to breath! Outside of aesthetics, I’m not sure if that serves any purpose, but it looks really neat!

Ember’s Journal – 10382:

The second room we investigated is an extensive library with shelves carved out of what Octaris has identified as “cloud marble” hovering amidst it! I’ve never heard of such a wondrous substance, but Octaris is VERY knowledgeable, so I trust this information as true! Books, folios, and scrolls documenting the various planes adorn the shelves, returning to their proper place when released! This must make cataloging information much easier, as well as clean up! Amongst the titles I noted such esoteric titles as Breathing XI: Concerning The Respiration of Mephits and Fruit of the Forest of Oils: A Treatise On The Safe Harvesting of Unknown Alchemical Reagents Suspended In Water! Amongst these tomes, we have discovered a journal that indicates that this tower was once part of the palace of a djinn named Pahwal ijil Ranginori, a devoted cleric of the demigod, who created this palace as a reward for his faithful service. Apparently, he was so devoted that he even allowed to took his deities name as part of his own! This journal also depicts the various forms of Ranginori, the many acts of the Duke of Thunder, and even describe his ever-shifting city! This sounds like a place I would LOVE to visit! Think about it; a city that changes! How fun would it be to try and chronicle all the sites within such a place!

Ember's Journal – 10383:

We have discovered a magical armory! Among the cache of weapons and decorative armor, we have found an item that Octaris has identified as Vambraces of the Djinn. There seems to be serviceable weapons of all shapes and sizes here, but only those are enchanted.

Ember's Journal – 10384:

We have found a room with a series of vials and tubes contains various scents… unusual for the residence of an elemental of Air. Some of these were labeled, while others were not. A few were unstoppered, but I was only able to categorize a few before being summoned to the main room. There seems to be some excitement happening from within the maelstrom!

Ember’s Journal – 10385:

Spectral djinns have appeared in the central room of the tower, evoking lightening throughout this level! Apparently, the cyclone contains an infusion of Chaos entrapped within… that should NOT be here on the Plane of Air! Krakos has identified the apparitions as a haunt; a sort of supernatural trap! He unusual nature of this particular haunt makes it unable to be harmed by normal means, but DOES leave it vulnerable to other forms of elemental attacks, such as my breath weapon! With one mighty blast of by breath weapon, I was able to dissipate the haunt; Krakos was able to attack it as well, due to his status as a follower of Ayrzul, aiding in my efforts! We are now investigating to see if any clues exist to help us put this pocket of Chaos back where it belongs!

Ember’s Journal – 10386:

Brave Octaris has entered into the Chaos maelstrom! I must go, or otherwise miss out on the apex of this glorious adventure! My stalwart companions are gearing up to enter into the maelstrom as well, and we are off!

Ember’s Journal – 10387:

We have crossed over into what appears to be a pocket sub-plane of the Plane of Chaos! It appears that a part f the Material Planes has been shunted here! There are runes that link the floating ruins within to ancient Thassilion and in particular, evocation magic and wrath, which means it is tied to the Runelord Alaznist, according to Jamila! And she should know, since she once resided on the Material Plane! Who knows how long this has been here?! This is quite the find, from an archeological perspective!

Ember’s Journal – 10388:

At the core of the Chaos, we have discovered the perpetrator of the maelstrom and the spread of the chaos-infused turbulence. It is a Nanuet Protean who calls himself Riftspinner! This rift appears to be a roughly 80-foot bubble. The protean has summoned some elemental Wysps as companions and has sent them to attack! I'm guessing that a diplomatic approach is definitely OUT of the question at this point!

Ember’s Journal – 10389:

Due in no small part to my ability to inspire the best in others, and a well-timed spell of Haste, Krakos and Zephyr were able to quickly dispatch Riftspinner, hike the rest of us dealt with the chaos-corrupted Wysps acting as his servitors. With is defeat, a semi-stable portal leading back to the Plane of Air, returning us to the former palace of Pahwal ijil Ranginori. Unfortunately, the tenacious rift remains.

Ember’s Journal – 10390:

Clever Octaris! He has used the primal energies of the Chaos pool beyond the gate, to summon something referred to as “a carpet square” and “tennis shoes,” correctly surmising that it will take electrical energy to close the rift! With these arcane components, he plans to create enough a spark of lightening to power the cyclone and counter the gate! With the able help of Zephyr and some summoned air elementals, Octaris was able to cleanse the former temple of Raginorin of the Chaos! Now to summon the sky serpents by releasing the stopper on the bottle provided by Captain Sisivel and return home! Krakos has opened the battle and it released such a pungent odor! I wonder if this is what is supposed to bring the sky serpents? I probably should have paid more attention when we received this…

Ember’s Journal – 10390:

We have returned to Armun Kelisk and the Four Winds, where we were congratulated by Ashasar for a job well done! We have shown that a group of diverse beings representing the various planes CAN indeed work together! Now for a well deserved rest, and more bubble pie!

Yes, thats exactly how it happened. Now, more bubble pie!
