If a character succeeds in a saving throw, she senses that some kind of influence tried to affect her, but not precisely what it was.

However, per recent rulings, NPCs can tell that you cast a spell, even if all components are removed, unless you have a game ability that specifically says otherwise and such things usually describe what checks NPCs can make to detect it.
