Enlarge Person gives bonus to Str--to the stat or to the modifier?

Rules Questions

Let's say my Str ability score is 16 giving a +2 Str modifier. If using an enlarge person spell, does the +2 bonus to Str mean my Str is now 18, giving me a +3 bonus, or does +2 to Str a modifier, e.g. my Str is still 16, but my modifier is +4?
Thanks!

The former option, not the latter.

Also, a Strength score of 16 is a +3 modifier, and 18 a +4 modifier.

Just to clarify.

thanks. So enlarge person advantage is somewhat situational given that it could add +1 or +2 to damage depending.

No, it always adds +2 to your strength score, which always adds +1 to the modifier. That is why spells that grant temporary bonuses to ability scores always add even values.

Ahh you all are right, and I'm all tired.
Thanks all.

Just stat. Which is a good thing because of the penalties...

I have found the reach increase for enlarge person much more important than the strength bonus in practice.

Preach.

If you are two handing it can sometimes add 2 damage.

16 = 3 * 1.5 = 4
18 = 4 * 1.5 = 6

Enlarge person is a damage and reach increase for an AC drop. Your attack rolls stay the same.

in truth I'm playing a Dex build Investigator with Dex to damage. I was trying to see what reduce person might do in terms of average damage. Now I see it would increase my hit, but not my average damage. I would use longarms extract to increase reach. The combo might be nice, and funny to think about becoming smaller but arms becoming longer.
