So let's kick the thread off with this awesome poster

I'm loving it. They added color!

Nobody tell Snyder.

Comic Con 2016: Wonder Woman trailer

Scarab Sages

Trailer looks good. My 4 year old, though, didn't recognize Diana as Wonder Woman til the logo at the end. Make of that what you will of the DCCU's Snyder Vision.

I think that the casting is good. She is super strong because magic. No need to have an overly buffed weightlifter.

Oh, I agree, she's just used to the aesthetic that the cartoons (and her undies, which are old comics images) have. The more muted reds, blues, and golds of the Snyderverse just didn't make the instant pop in her mind between the armored girl and Wonder Woman. I think Gadot is a real winner in the casting.

While I was skeptical at first, I think her appearance in BVS and now with this trailer, I think solidifies her as the WW of this generation.

Mostly because she's showcasing what it is to be Wonder Woman. Not just personal strength, but her own innate character.

That part where she rised from the trenches and that were she used Lasso of Truth made me shriek in euphoric joy! What a trailer! Really excited!

I can't wait, it has been a long wait to see a Wonder Woman movie and before Marvel has had a single female lead movie.

Dragon,

Yeah I kept hoping Marvel would have Carol Danvers or hell She-Hulk out by now. Captain Marvel should have come by 2018, not 2020. :p

A good or great WW film will hopefully ensure Marvel steps up their game for Captain Marvel.

Edit: There's still time at this Comic Con for them to announce Captain Marvel details, like casting.

Yep.

Just added to my 'must watch at show' list.

Well so far they've talked about Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Thor Ragnarock. Still no mention of Captain Marvel...

Other than a title card and Brie Larson confirmation.

Yes I know. I'm putting a new post up about that and GotG2 stuff.

Liberty's Edge

The trailer looks good, I'm not a fan of the bellacose, sword and board version of Wonder Woman that Snyder and current DC seem to be enamored of, but other than that peeve, it looks good.

Kren,

I'm okay with it since I think it will give Diana/Wonder Woman more experience to fight against certain enemies. Especially moreso than the rest of the JLA.

Plus it's ridiculous for an amazon not to have actual weapons.

Liberty's Edge

It's contrary to the point of the character.

DEPENDING on which run, which author, and which background (yes, there's a couple of different versions) one uses.

I like it.

I'll be there with bells on.

Not all of Wonder Woman's versions aren't pro-fighting.

Because of his vulnerability to magic, Diana's sword can cut Superman, as demonstrated aptly in Kingdom Come.

Yep. Which means in a fight, Wonder Woman would probably beat up Superman. ;)

Thomas Seitz wrote:

Depends on which and which. If it's against Boy Scout Superman, he'll lose because his instinct to hold back, whereas Diana WILL kill if motivated enough.

If it's Nasty Evil Superman, the outcome is more in doubt.

I'll be there.

You'll be where Freehold?

Drah,

Mm maybe but I think Evil Superman already fought Wonder Woman.

I just watched that trailer. Wow. I always felt that a Wonder Woman movie ought to take place during World War 2, and ought to have Steve Trevor. And judging from the trailer, it looks like this movie got the right feel.

Still, how can anyone not wince at that clumsy, awkward dialogue?

The trailer was quite good, and the old-school call-back to Steve Trevor and Etta Candy was nice touch. I do have to say I am curious on why the apparent World War I scenario instead of WW2?

World War II idea being maybe too cliché and maybe to avoid Nazi references? Plus treading the Captain America line a little too much there was something they wanted to avoid.

Well, if you want a full scale war without the obvious morality of WWII and Nazis, WWI is a good choice.

Especially if that plot arc is to illuminate just how non-glorious, horrifying, and pointless WWI was... and to see how that affects Diana.

If someone is attempting to portray the 'War is Hell' aspect and then show that Diana is decidedly *beyond* such a flimsy comparison, the First World War is actually the better of the two to make the story.

With the sheer insanity of all the things that were introduced during those battles, it's amazing there's a livable Europe left, tbh.

--First major use of chemical weapons

--First major impact of biological weapons (unintended)

--First major use of the machine gun

--First major use of tanks

--First major use of planes

--First major use of telegraph/telephone

Those are the ones that are off the top of my head, I'm sure there are a lot more.

To take all that and then have Diana there and be... "And for all of your advancements, for all of your supposed greatness... you're still just mortal men." would really drive the point home.

Gee, I wonder what reason Chris Pine might have for inserting awkward pauses into his acting.

On a completely unrelated note....what role is he playing in that new Star Trek movie?

Hama wrote:

Aside from the name, there's very little resemblance between the Amazons of DC/Sensation! Comics and the Amazons of Greek myth which were set up to be monsters from the Greek point of view. (The Greeks thinking that misogyny was the proper sign of a right thinking and intellectually developed man.)

Wonder Woman didn't need weapons because her main weapons were Truth, as represented by her lasso, and her own speed and discipline. They've seem to have ditched her bullet deflecting bracers to make her a Captain America knockoff with her shield.

The times when Diana used arms and armor in her adventures mark special departures for the character especially when she makes war on the Olympian Pantheon herself.

The other thing that threw me for a loop was the line. "I was given life by Zeus" when originally it was the female Olympians who are responsible for both the empowerment of the Amazons and the creation of Diana herself. With this change, Diana becomes yet another of Zeus' bastard children, even if somewhat less direct than intervention as a shower of gold.

Who would have guessed an actor named Pine would have a wooden delivery? I wonder if he gets needled for it?

It's something the character has kept returning to ever since Kingdom Come proved such a hit.

You can correctly argue that it was intended there as a sign of just how out of control the situation had gotten (and Diana's use of the sword had immediate and fatal consequences for ol' Von Bach), but in the arena of fictional characters, the Rule of Cool has subsequently led to plenty of cover art featuring Diana with a sword in hand- particularly in her most recent series from DC.

She has had three distinct origins to date in the comics, and for a movie trailer aimed at a mass audience, Zeus is a name more people are likely to have kneejerk recognition of than, say, Hera, Demeter, Artemis, Persephone, Hestia, or Aphrodite. I suppose she could have said "the gods," but, eh.

It's a major difference. In all of her previous retellings, Diana's origins have pretty much an exclusively female set of hands to them. Zeus is not just a "god", he's the patriarch of the Olympian Pantheon and pretty much the most prolific divine philanderer of just about any of the mythic pantheons.

It's her origin in The New 52.

Is this supposed to take place during World War 1 or 2? The planes look like they are from WW1, but some of the soldier uniforms and other vehicles look WW2.

The New 52 can go... Well.... It's said that if you disagree with a comic orgin, wait a few months and it will be retconned anyway.

Haven't we already retconned the new 52? At least partially.

Is WW one of the bits that hasn't changed?

Not a fan. it should have been Gina Carano.

I think production started before that. The movies are their own continuity though, so I don't know how much that matters.

They could have used the Marsten's original origin or the post-Crisis goddesses one, but they went with the child of Zeus demigod one.

fair enough, the present actress can't fight.

or look believable in a choreographed fight.
or even pose as if she's a fighter, and she is depicting a fighter.

at least not without tons of CGI

and i'm a fan of tons of CGI.

i'm just going to say it again. not a fan. hope that film dies like fan4stic
