Undead Pawns

Paizo Products

What is the best set (or sets) to build up a collection of undead pawns?

I'm specifically looking for a variety of skeletons, zombies, ghouls and wrights.

My biggest complaint with the Paizo pawns line is that there really isn't a good option if you want to stock up on a lot of one specific kind of monster. The best option given what you're asking for is probably the Bestiary 1 Box or Monster Codex Box, both of which are great general-purpose products and happen to have a fairly good assortment of undead in their roster. B1 has probably the widest selection of undead, but relatively few of any specific kind. For instance, you get just 1 Wight, which is completely insufficient for a monster with "create spawn" on its statblock. The MC has a big selection of ghouls and vampires in specific, but no other kinds of undead. In terms of quality, B1 is good all around, while MC is highly variable. I personally think the MC ghouls are some of the best monster art in any Pathfinder product and I've gotten a lot of use out of those pawns, but I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about the vampire pawns, most of which remain unused to this day.

I've picked up Bestiary 1 Box last year, but it didn't have the mix I was looking for. I'm going to order the Monster Codex Box soon, but it still sounds like I'll need to research other options.

If anyone else drops by, what about fungi type creature or beastmen?

I've always thought the main shortcoming of the entire pawn line is lack of sufficient pawns for low-level, common monsters that come in groups. Orcs, skeletons, dire rats, etc.

Don't get me wrong; I appreciate that there are limited slots, but a single extra sheet of carefully-selected creatures would have increased the utility of the Bestiary Box immensely.

MC covers ghouls very well, as already mentioned by Dasrak.

You can find severals mundane skeletons and zombies in the Beginner Box (which has like 80 pawns overall, focused on low level). Hell's Rebels has two quite unusual skunk ape skeletons.

Wrights are appearantly poorly supported - I'd use similiar incorporeal undead here. Hell's Rebels has three wretchghosts and a very nice wraith.

Finally, I'd check eBay. At least German shops offer single pawns for ~1$ per piece. That's quite expensive compared to the usual 10c to 20c, but this way you can pick up whatever you want.

Bestiary Box 1 and 2.

The Mummy''s Mask set has a bunch, as well as constructs, btw.

Buy all the sets and you'll have enough of what you need and too much of some. But seriously, just buying one or more of the Bestiary Box will get you a long way.

Thanks for the suggestions. As I noted earlier, I'm picking up the Monster Codex box soon and will look into some of the other sets that you mentioned.

Forget all that bro. Buy the PDF, print them yourself. If you check out some of the online videos via youtube you can find some great ones on how to make your own pawns. Using those techniques you can have your army, it is cheap, and you have the fun in creating them and watching your players drool over them!

I'm starting to think you are right, Lazlo. Right now, there isn't really a good way to build up a base of undead pawns.

Except for like buying the actual sets with the pawns in them. Aside from that, no there is no good way to build up a base of undead pawns.

I know. It is just frustrating to buy a box set for only a few undead pawns. I think my next step is to pick up Mummy's Mask and save for Bestiary Boxes 2 and 3.

Other than that, I might try my hand and making my own.
