Wizard Prepping Open Slot from Level without rest?

Rules Questions

Surprised this hasn't come up with me before, but since wizards and other prep casters are allowed to leave slots open to prepare later, would they be able to prepare slots they obtain from gaining a level during the day?

No. Most of your abilities "charge" through 8 hours of sleep or (for divine spellcasters) at a specific time of the day plus whatever form of preparation you use.

Even if your potential maximum number of spells increase later on the day (as an example, by donning a more powerful Headband of Vast Intelligence), your new slots aren't charged, so you can't fill them.

Ah, good point. Thanks.

Don't know if it is covered when you level. We play you can use new slots when gained. Still need to study, but can do so immediately.

Yeah, am not sure you're going to find a definitive area from this, but we have always played that you gain your new slots in a given day. You can fill the new slots as you may open slots.

Consider: when you advance a level, you update your BAB, Saves, Skills, and so on. You get the benefit immediately upon the level increase. Why would you not get the spell slots also?

That's... a pretty fair way of looking at it, I think. XD

(And if you don't want them to use it in the middle of the day, you can always tell them they level at the end of it...)
