Its truly a sad day for the RPG Industry.
We have lost a true friend to the industry and wonderful gamer and publisher of high quality products.
Steven D Russell RIP
Holy crap. 42 is way too young. :(
Edit: Does anyone know how his family is doing? Is there a public donation fund for expenses?
(Bows head in moment of silence)

Rest in Peace Steve. I'll never forget you for your generosity and for helping me get started in the industry. I learned a lot from you, and wish your family the best in these dark times.
I ... I'm at such a loss. Working with Rite for so many years I just don't know how to handle this.

So very sorry to hear this. My condolences to all his family and friends.
Deepest sympathies to all his friends and family. He had a huge impact on the freelance and third-party market. It's awful that he's gone. Too soon, way too soon.
:(
I remember working for him as a play-tester on his first project, an Adventure Path for Arcana Evolved.
Many condolences.
Damn. May he rest peacefully.

I'll post here what I posted on ENworld, where this news broke.
Quote:
Steve gave me my first paid work in the industry, and even after I moved on from writing and developing for Rite, he was always a vocal cheerleader for my professional progress. It can be overwhelming trying to catch up with every industry friend every year at Gen Con, but I always made a point of finding Steve (usually at the ENnies ceremony), sharing a drink, and catching up on the newest projects he had cooking. He will be greatly missed, both by the industry as a whole, and by me and others who called him a friend.
As a note of warning, for those particularly touched by this tragedy, the link in the OP leads to an image of the wreckage in which we can only assume Steve passed away. If this is something that might be difficult to see, consider the following article at ENworld instead: RIP Rite Publishing Owner Steven Russell
Damn. I never knew him personally, but he did good work. Sad to see he's gone, especially so suddenly.

Just a quick note: I've gone ahead and removed the link in the original post, for reasons Mark indicated above. In addition, I have merged duplicate threads into this one.

Now he is gaming at the great table with the likes of Gygax and Arneson. Condolences to his friends, family, and to those that worked with him throughout the years.
I am not sure where on these boards is the best place to post this, and I have not seen it yet shared, so it seems appropriate to place it here...
Steve Russell, publisher and owner of Rite Publishing was killed last night in a car accident.

That is horrible! The hobby has lost a true and enthusiastic friend.
I only met Steve once, at GenCon several years ago, but his keen intelligence and his desire to produce superior products were immediately obvious.
God bless you, Steve.
Sad news, indeed. My condolences to his friends and family.

Few years ago I contacted Steve as I noticed he was looking for a cartographer for Adventure Quarterly. I didn't have anything published before, or even drawn any maps prior to that save some home game scribblings. I made one test map for Steve and he took a leap and hired me for the magazine.
Steve was the one who got me to this industry. I thanked him many times on our chats for the opportunity and support he gave me, and his answer was always the same - "It's all you, I just recognized your talent". He did much more than. He always believed in me, pushed me forward and over my limits, took the time to encourage me and give me advice even if he really didn't have time for it.
Steve was a great publisher, amazing mentor, and most importantly, even if I never get to meet him in person, a very good friend. I will miss him sorely.
Heartfelt Condolences to all his friends and family.
My deepest condolences to his family, friends and coworkers.
Oh no :( I don't really know what to say.
Just a couple of days ago he posted about the new series of Lords of Gossamer and Shadow supplements. It's hard to believe he's gone now.
I enjoyed his products and my deepest condolences go to those who knew him.
We will miss you, Steven. May you rest in eternal gaming
This is terrible news. Steve was a jolly good chap and the hobby is lessened for his loss. My thoughts are with his family at this most horrible time.
I am quite at a loss for words. I talked to him just a couple of days ago about the diceless system, Amber and his upcoming projects and that he is gone is just so hard to take in.

That is sorry news to hear. Condolences for his family.
We'll miss you good sir. I wish I knew you better.
Such sad news. Steve was critical in my development as a freelancer, encouraging some crazy ideas and being supportive, professional, and friendly throughout. He will be missed by many, including the many whose lives--professional and personal--he touched.
My interactions with Steve were mostly via e-mail a couple years ago but this is sad news. He was quite a prolific writer.
