Once a year ?
Once a month ?
Once a week ?
Everyday ?Or
Random depending on GM mood?
I am currently GMing a monthly Saturday Rise of the Runelords campaign; 1pm to 6pm, and we are halfway through Chapter Two (after 18 months).
I also GM a weekly Skull & Shackles game, usually Monday nights; 7.30pm to 11pm (also in Chapter Two, after 6 months).
Both groups have 4 players, and one player is in both campaigns.

We get together Sunday night from around 6pm to 11pm; been working great for us for nearly a decade.
Currently, we're running through Iron Gods, which we started on 7/26/15. We just started book 5, so we figure we should be wrapping it up in September or so. We probably missed 6-8 sessions this last year.
Prior to that, we played Wrath of the Righteous for about 9 months, got to Book 4, but two of our regular players were having a lot of things going on out-of-game, so we were forced to drop it. A shame, we were all (GM included) having a blast.
Up next, I'll be running our "Drunken Party" through Jade Regent, which we're all looking forward to.

Currently I have different games on alternating weekends.
Weekend 1
Friday 7-11: Pathfinder Forgotten Realms (mythic)
Saturday 3-10: I'm running 4e Scales of War.
Sunday 3-9: Pathfinder Iron Gods.
Weekend 2
Friday 7-11: Savage Worlds Accursed (monsters fighting the witches that created them.
Saturday 12-9: 4e Zeitgeist
Sunday 3-9: Pathfinder space fantasy
All of the time: PBP

Not counting PFS, where I play once or twice a week. I'm running two RotRL games and a Mummy's Mask game and each of those groups manage to get together every 6 to 12 weeks, skewing toward longer gaps. Families, work, etc.

2 people marked this as a favorite. |
For the last 15 years or so it's whenever we can get together. Sometimes it's every 2 weeks, sometimes 6 weeks or more pass between sessions. We're all in our late 40s to early 50s now and family obligations, health, and regular day to day life get in the way. That's a far cry from 5 nights a week from my college days.

4 years ago I was in 3 weekly games. That was getting in the way of getting in the way of life in general. I dropped out of one, then a couple years ago dropped my second game, leaving me doing a game a week, which was doable. As all things change, the last game became less rewarding, the serious roleplayers scattering to the four winds. I have recently dropped my last game, and I don't think I will be picking up another for a while. I have avoided a couple potentially interesting games, but really couldn't stoke up any enthusiasm. Taking a break now I think. My posts here seem to be out of touch too,

Multiple times a week. Until recently, we had three AP games going. Reign of Winter ended, and Skull and Shackles went to every two weeks instead of weekly. Carrion Crown has been once a month for the most part. We also run a random number of PFS tables as our schedules permit. And I support gamedays almost every weekend.

Playing 2 campaigns in our house (me, wife, 12, 10, and 8yr old). I run a homebrew, and my 12 year old is running us through RotRL.
Typical week:
*2-3hr session Friday night
2-3hr session on Sat or Sun.
* - "sometimes" if we miss a weekend like last weekend when me and the oldest boy's were camping; well try to toss in a 2hr session on a weeknight if school is out. Like tonight!!!

Every Thursday. We've missed maybe 4 or 5 weeks since November last year (when we started our Reign of Winter game).
But it wasn't always like this...
While I can respect and understand that everyone doesn't have as much time as me (or doesn't make as much time as me), we all went to high school, it's not like we didn't have time, they chose to not have time. It's not like they did anything "better", I was the guy who went to the gym every day, I was the wild party-animal and I still had more time than them. And while I can respect that some people can/want to play at a slow rate, I sure as hell can't understand it.
I tried my best, talked to the players and spent hours of planning and communicating with everyone every week to try to make it work. That all feel appart when I stopped DMing.
What made me not tolerate this specific group was the fact that I was almost never informed about the session canceling (after I left the DM seat) untill I attempted a third call to someone AFTER I had been waiting for everyone about 10 to 15 minutes outside the basement where we used to play (really f!~+ing funny during the winter or on rainy days). Took about an extra hour of my life every week (getting there, waiting and then going home with a clawing depression). It really didn't help that every excuse to a canceled session ranged from "I forgot to mention that I'm not really avalable today" (Which actually meant that it wasn't convenient enough) to "I forgot my papers" (Because they sure as f@ couldn't turn back home to pick them up and come maybe 30min late to the session. They instead decided to just turn back and not come at all) to "I don't feel like it today" (Because...?).
And when I tried to talk to the group about it, I was censured by the DM (he deleted my posts in our Facebook group that we use to communicate within the group between sessions) and I was told to not "start anything"... And in addition, half the players didn't seem to care about the game when we actually played either. Lots of cheating/not knowing simple mechanics of the game (it took about 20min of a session to explain to the Druid what a "ranged touch attack" was, when he frequently used Lightning Arc. "Best" part was that he acted like the biggest dick I've ever seen him like when I tried to help him...) Many sessions were about 6 hours long but only 2 hours of them were used to play the game... And the DM did nothing, absolutely f~*@ing nothing to make anything happen. Even when I asked him if we could play he just said "we'll wait untill the others are ready".
The inconsistency and last minute excuses and the outright incompetence of these people drowe me away from them, even outside of the game. The nail in the coffin was when the DM did some... well, unforgivable things, against a player (outside of the game), the entire group feel appart. The only one I've bothered keeping contact with since then is the only other person who actually seemed to want to play (and the person I knew the least), so I kept him around for my second group.
Now I've made sure that I have players who can play at a regular basis. I'll probably never allow anyone with a "tighter" schedule ruin my fun again.

I GM Giantslayer Sunday from 2 till 6-ish.
I GM Hell's Rebels Wednesday from about 6 till 9-ish (we are slated to start tomorrow).
I GM Mummy's Mask Saturday from noon-ish till 8-ish, tough really only about 2 or 3 times per month.
I imagine this schedule will change at some point this fall due to scheduling conflicts.

I know your feel bro. Sometimes players dint simply care because of "reason" like busy or anything.
But simply. I have a GM who feel sick or busy so we cant play (judge based on lifestyle its understandable. I should trust her or not that she is busy and sick?). I start to think that we wont play anymore :(
Its 3 weeks. I hope it wont get worser.
Hard to find player in indonesia.
Or should I abbandon my group?
This game need dedication anyway.

I have two games we play:
One is 5 players who play every other Tuesday via Roll 20 (Iron Gods adventure path where I'm playing a Goblin UBar4/URog4). The GM for that is a stickler for "if someone can't show up, we cancel" and that's caused some conflict.
The other is 5 players who I host every other Sunday in person (Skulls and Shackles where I GM). We generally play if at least 3 can make it.
We have a pretty firm schedule for both because the GM of game one is a player in game two and I play his game and outside commitments mean we can't play two games in three nights.

Goblin Game ~ weekly 6:30pm - 10:00pm (usually Wednesday but it got moved to Thursday this week)
Orc Game ~ fortnightly 8pm - 1am Friday or Saturday
Rat Game ~ fortnightly 8pm - 1am Friday or Saturday
Viking Game ~ fortnightly 3pm - midnight Saturday (sometimes runs even later but also sometimes gets canceled)
These are all live tabletop games though a few times we’ve had somebody who was traveling join via Google Hangouts or Roll20. There’s very little overlap between the groups other than my girlfriend and I though a few of the players have other games with different groups and one stays pretty busy as a PFS DM. The Rat Game is the only one I’m currently DM for though I’ll probably get back to running more fairly soon.

Ideally every two weeks, but that is rare. More like every 2-5 weeks. It's almost guaranteed to be every calendar month. In the old days it was every weeks, only missing a couple per year. We game on Sunday's, starting at 10 AM and going until somewhere between 3 and 5 PM.
I'm going to be starting a second game soon though. It will be on Saturdays and will be less frequent.

It likely averages out once per month on Saturday evenings. Roughly 5 hour session. I am currently running Emerald Spire for 4-6 players.
As stated earlier, getting face-to-face players with schedules that synchronize is hard. One guy Skypes in; it's like Futurama with his head in a jar at one side of the table!
All our kids are about the same age. In five years the oldest of each set will be of babysitting ages; easier to play then.

Either way, I guess I'm not the only addict.
Yeah, I'm aware of that. I was just commenting on what Jiggy said. I searched around on the Roll20 site and didn't see anything that looked interesting out of the gate, though I didn't put a lot of effort into it.
I'm still trying to get my Wednesday HR rolling (pun may be applied) without success. We are cursed. It seems there's something new every week that prevents us from playing.

Not sure I can get into PBP. Seems too slow. I'm an anxious anticipator and would probably lose my $@#! waiting around. :)
That's why you join multiple campaigns. ;)
My general routine is that I have a couple of spare minutes every now and then at work, so I'll check up on my various games and make short posts. If I need to make a long post (more common when I'm the GM), it waits until lunch. In total, I'm usually posting multiple times per day while still leaving my evenings free for spending time with my wife or doing errands or whatever. Or if I do have some downtime in the evenings, I can post even more. :D
If I were only in one game, I'd probably go crazy too. But with multiples, I've actually heard of people having to drop out of games because they got into so many at once that they couldn't handle it all. So, PbP might be worth a second look.

A few pod-casts recently discussed PbP. Player drop out rates were brought up as a possible concern.

We have a 7 regular players, and 2 that make it by Skype/Online when they can.
Our schedule is once a week.
Since we are all long-in-the-tooth players (read:older), with job/family responsibilities, it's not uncommon for 1 or even 2 games a month to be skipped though due to absences.
In those cases, usually the rest of us will meet up for general card/board games (Zombicide a current favorite)
Currently, we are running 2 rpg campaigns.
One is my PF game:
The other is a home-brew, steam punk game one of the guys is 'beta-testing' with us. (based on D20 Modern)
So we alternate between the two, with the occasional card/board game night.

Used to be once a month and that lasted for a about 6 months. It's dwindled down to GM mood / availability however and haven't gotten to play for a couple months.
I'm going to be starting a once a month game of Rappan Athuk for that group, (DM included) I guess we'll see how long that keeps my interest.
